Marian did not care very much for bread and milk, but the cat and kitten did, as was plainly shown by the way they hunched themselves down in front of the tin pan into which Marian had poured their supper. In the next room Grandpa and Grandma Otway were sitting and little bits of their talk came to Marian's ears once in a while when her thoughts ceased to wander in other directions. "If only one could have faith to believe implicitly," Grandma Otway said.

Marian devotion flourished as part of the affective piety movement in late medieval Europe. As Karen Saupe notes, “what was most important about Mary was her unique identity as the point of connection between the divine and the human.” Fulfilling the paradoxical roles of virtuous virgin, loving human mother, and queen of heaven, Mary became for her worshipers a powerful intercessor to Christ—to whom penitents could turn to beg forgiveness for their sins. This edition compiles 93 lyrics from the thirteenth through fifteenth centuries to provide a representative sampling of Middle English Marian devotion. Saupe’s volume presents nine sections, beginning with iconic moments in Mary’s life (the Annunciation, Nativity, Crucifixion, and Assumption) and progressing into later categories of prayer and praise. While most of the lyrics remain anonymous, a handful are attributed to known authors, including Chaucer, Lydgate, Hoccleve, and Dunbar. Altogether, they express the efforts of the English populace to voice their anxieties and joys through Mary.

This is the story of the Marian Convent of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Scranton, Pennsylvania. It has been a deeply moving experience for me to research and write the history of the Marian Convent, 1956-2005. Much of this forty-nine year history has been captured through my interviews with past IHM administrators of this facility. Their living memories remind all of us of the courage which brought the physical facility into being, and the commitment of our entire IHM Congregation over the years to support our ill and retired sisters by our love, respect, and financial treasure.
