El primer arranque de mi decisi n de escribir una tesis sobre Mart n Ugalde surgi con la visita que el escritor efectu a la Universidad de Deusto en respuesta a una invitaci n del profesor I aki Beti cuando yo era alumna en aquella universidad. La figura de Ugalde no me era desconocida. Al igual que en muchas otras casas vascas, algunos de sus libros se encontraban entre los vol menes de la biblioteca familiar y los ecos de su incansable trabajo en favor del euskara y la recuperaci n de la identidad colectiva vasca tras la guerra del treintais is destellaban en mi subconsciente. Recuerdo que su sabidur a y humildad llenaron el aula y c mo sus reflexiones sobre el exilio consiguieron trascender la mera experiencia de quien ha sufrido el horror del destierro para traducirla en forma de discurso articulado y coherente. Recuerdo tambi n con claridad c mo un asertivo Ugalde titube al tratar de dar respuesta a la pregunta espont nea de una alumna -yo misma- que le inquiri sobre las decepciones pol ticas y personales vividas tras su vuelta del exilio. Despu s, vinieron varios encuentros con el escritor propiciados por los profesores Jos ngel Ascunce e I aki Beti. Las visitas a su casa de Hondarribia y las conversaciones que all mantuvimos fueron -cada una de ellas- experiencias nicas que recuerdo con inestimable afecto y agradecimiento.
Jack London (1876-1916), was an American author and a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction. He was one of the first Americans to make a lucrative career exclusively from writing. London was self-educated. He taught himself in the public library, mainly just by reading books. In 1898, he began struggling seriously to break into print, a struggle memorably described in his novel, Martin Eden (1909). Jack London was fortunate in the timing of his writing career. He started just as new printing technologies enabled lower-cost production of magazines. This resulted in a boom in popular magazines aimed at a wide public, and a strong market for short fiction. In 1900, he made $2,500 in writing, the equivalent of about $75,000 today. His career was well under way. Among his famous works are: Children of the Frost (1902), The Call of the Wild (1903), The Sea Wolf (1904), The Game (1905), White Fang (1906), The Road (1907), Before Adam (1907), Adventure (1911), and The Scarlet Plague (1912).
This open access book presents the first detailed study of one of the most important masterpieces of Renaissance cartography, Martin Waldseem ller's Carta marina of 1516. By transcribing, translating into English, and detailing the sources of all of the descriptive texts on the map, as well as the sources of many of the images, the book makes the map available to scholars in a wholly unprecedented way. In addition, the book provides revealing insights into how Waldseem ller went about making the map -- information that can't be found in any other source. The Carta marina is the result of Waldseem ller's radical re-evaluation of what a world map should be; he essentially started from scratch when he created it, rejecting the Ptolemaic model and other sources he had used in creating his 1507 map, and added more descriptive texts and a wealth of illustrations. Given its content, the book offers an essential reference work not only on this map, but also for anyone working in sixteenth-century European cartography. This work was published by Saint Philip Street Press pursuant to a Creative Commons license permitting commercial use. All rights not granted by the work's license are retained by the author or authors.
