The Pursuit of Continuous Improvement in Educational Organizations

The Pursuit of Continuous Improvement in Educational Organizations

Michael D. Richardson; Richard L. Blackbourn; Connie Ruhl-Smith; Joseph A. Haynes

University Press of America
1997
nidottu
Wave after wave of educational reform has flooded the educational landscape with pronouncements for change in education; however, none with the impact of Total Quality Management. Today, Total Quality Management is a conceptual and practical reality for many educational administrators who are caught on the horns of a dilemma, balancing the demands for increased accountability within the context of calls for participatory decision making. Few alternatives have been identified from either the research (knowledge base) or the practitioner base which will assist the practicing administrator deal with this dilemma. One such alternative is Total Quality Management (TQM), the most critical component of which is continuous improvement. This book argues that TQM and particularly continuous improvement should be a tool for the improvement of educational leadership performance.
The Storms of Providence

The Storms of Providence

Michael D. Robinson

University Press of America
2003
nidottu
The Storms of Providence surveys and critiques Calvinism, Arminianism, and Open Theism as models of the divine-world relationship. Further, the book defends a modified version of traditional Arminianism. The author contends that the most theologically and philosophically sound model of the divine-world relationship is one that affirms that human actions are free and not divinely determined, even while asserting that God has complete knowledge of the future.
Film, Art, and Filmart

Film, Art, and Filmart

Michael D. Dahnke

University Press of America
2007
nidottu
This work is a basic introduction to aesthetics and covers the major theories of art, while referring to various filmic examples to illustrate the complex ideas related to the philosophy of art. In addition, it addresses film itself as an art form, analyzes film studies, and discusses film's ambiguous cultural/artistic position. The overarching theme of the book is the most basic aesthetic question: What is art? That eternal and critical question is explored by addressing representation, formalism, and expressivism, three classic aesthetic theories. Film, Art, and Filmart begins by focusing on Plato, including a look at the issue of censorship as it is raised in his Republic. Then formalism is discussed via Kant, and Roger Fry's and Clive Bell's theory of Significant Form. Expressivism is dealt with by utilizing views by Leo Tolstoy and R.G. Collingwood. Contemporary issues in aesthetics are illuminated with George Dickie's theory of art, while also examining the cognitive theories of Nelson Goodman and Martha Nussbaum. The final chapter opens definitional structure up a bit by investigating the concept of freedom as integral to art and by straying from the largely analytic focus of the rest of the book through analysis of continental philosophers, such as Hegel, Nietzsche, and Foucault.

Prelude to Quebec's Quiet Revolution

Prelude to Quebec's Quiet Revolution

Michael D. Behiels

McGill-Queen's University Press
1985
nidottu
In this study of the intellectual origins of Quebec's Quiet Revolution of the 1960s, Michael Behiels has provided the most comprehensive account to date of the two competing ideological movements which emerged after World War II to challenge the tenets of traditional French-Canadian nationalism. The neo-nationalists were a group of young intellectuals and journalists, centered upon Le Devoir and L'Action nationale in Montreal, who set out to reformulate Quebec nationalism in terms of a modern, secular, urban-industrial society which would be fully "master in its own house." An equally dedicated group of French Canadians of liberal or social democratic persuasion was based upon the periodical Cite libre -one of whose editors was Pierre Trudeau - and had links with organized labour. Citelibristes sought to remove what they considered to be the major obstacles to the creation of a modern francophone society: the all-pervasive influence of clericalism inherent in the Catholic church's control of education and the social services, and the persistence among Quebec's intelligentsia of an outmoded nationalism which advocated the preservation of a rural and elitist society and neglected the development of the individual and the pursuit of social equality. Behiels delineates the divergent "societal models" proposed by the two movements by focusing upon such themes as the critique of traditional nationalism; the roles of church, state, and labour; the response to the "new federalism"; the reform of education; and the search for a third party. He shows how the rivals combined to help bring down an anachronistic Union Nationale government in June 1960. In one form or another, he concludes, Cite libre liberalism and neo-nationalism have remained at the heart of the political and ideological debate that has continued in Quebec since the Duplessis era.

Faces in the Forest

Michael D. Blackstock

McGill-Queen's University Press
2001
sidottu
In Faces in the Forest Michael Blackstock, a forester and an artist, takes us into the sacred forest, revealing the mysteries of carvings, paintings, and writings done on living trees by First Nations people. Blackstock details this rare art form through oral histories related by the Elders, blending spiritual and academic perspectives on Native art, cultural geography, and traditional ecological knowledge. Faces in the Forest begins with a review of First Nations cosmology and the historical references to tree art. Blackstock then takes us on a metaphorical journey along the remnants of trading and trapping trails to tree art sites in the Gitxsan, Nisga'a, Tlingit, Carrier, and Dene traditional territories, before concluding with reflections on the function and meaning of tree art, its role within First Nations cosmology, and the need for greater respect for all of our natural resources. This fascinating study of a haunting and little-known cultural phenomenon helps us to see our forests with new eyes.
Canada's Greatest Wartime Muddle

Canada's Greatest Wartime Muddle

Michael D. Stevenson

McGill-Queen's University Press
2001
sidottu
To determine the government's commitment to a comprehensive mobilization strategy, Stevenson considers the effect of NSS policies on eight significant sectors of the Canadian population: Native Canadians, university students, war industry workers, coal miners, longshoremen, meatpackers, hospital nurses, and textile workers. These case studies show that mobilization officials achieved only a limited number of their regulatory goals and that Ottawa's attempt to organize and allocate the nation's military and civilian human resources on a rational, orderly, and efficient scale was largely ineffective. This detailed assessment of the effect of NSS activities on a broad cross-section of Canadian society provides a fresh perspective on the domestic impact of the Second World War. It will appeal to a wide range of readers interested in Canada's economic, military, social, and political history.

Uplifting Christ Through Autumn

Uplifting Christ Through Autumn

Michael D Wuchter

CSS Publishing Company
2006
pokkari
For Michael Wuchter, the gospel is in the details. From the story of the pilgrims who over-invited to that first Thanksgiving Day to the sugar content in grapes at the harvest, Wuchter probes the parables and sayings of Jesus to find every possible piece of good news in them. A wordsmith for the Word made Flesh, Michael has left us a treasure of thoughtful and insightful sermons that read as well as they preach. John D. Morris Pastor, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Dublin, Ohio Uplifting Christ Through Autumn gathers together 12 imaginative sermons from a remarkably gifted parish pastor and campus minister, covering a variety of important occasions, such as: * World Communion Day * Stewardship Sunday * Homecoming/Fall Festival * Reformation Sunday * All Saints Day * Holy Cross Day * Thanksgiving However, the ecumenically oriented expressions of Christian faith, hope, and love in these messages make them relevant for any time of the year. Plus, Wuchter's keen eye for the telling detail, exemplified by his observation that "the refrigerator is the household religious shrine that reveals the ethical heartbeat and spiritual faith of a family," means they're readable and appealing for everyone. Michael Wuchter's painting with words, his weaving of poetry into the art of the sermon, is what makes these words worth reading. These sermons seem to sing from resurrection life beyond death, and focus our eyes, ears, and hearts on the living, breathing, poetic, and art-filled Gospel. Read. See. Hear. Imagine. These sermons will allow you to touch the holy. Canon Howard Anderson President and Warden Cathedral College of Washington National Cathedral Michael Wuchter's sermons are a mending together of Word and world, allowing divine love to flow into the unpredictability of real life. I highly recommend this book for pastors, parishioners, and students alike. Edwin Ehlers Former President New Jersey Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Accenting themes such as sainthood, death, angels, reformation, thanksgiving, and unity, These sermons are marked by sound biblical-historical scholarship and are linked to the challenges of our present-day life. The Word is powerfully proclaimed in every sermon. Daniel F. Martensen Ecumenical Research Fellow, Washington (D.C.) Theological Consortium Former Director, Dept. of Ecumenical Affairs, ELCA Michael D. Wuchter was the senior pastor of First Lutheran Church in Duluth, Minnesota, when he suddenly passed away in 2000 while traveling to Namibia. In addition to parish ministry, Wuchter also served for 18 years as university pastor at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.
