Sondra Perry: A Terrible Thing

Sondra Perry: A Terrible Thing

What turns a random space into a place? What inscribes history into it, or lends it significance? These questions occupy the installation artist Sondra Perry in her current piece, A Terrible Thing, for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland. On Euclid Street in the heart of Cleveland, Perry carries out a kind of archaeological study of the street’s history using video, pictures found online, and digital methods of representation. In doing so, she relates the changing infrastructure of race representation on the street and its gender-political effect in everyday use to each other in order to negotiate issues of identity—of a city, a society, and of individuals. This work became a prism of times and perspectives that can now be imagined with the help of this publication.

Julian Perry Robinson: Pioneer in the Prohibition of Chemical and Biological Warfare
Julian P. Perry Robinson (1941-2020) made a unique contribution to protecting the world from the misuse of chemistry and biology. A trained chemist and patent lawyer, he applied his specialist knowledge to better understand the nature of chemical and biological warfare (CBW) and how best to prevent this. He pioneered open source methods that enabled him to engage with, and inform, national and international policy making, working across the natural and social sciences, and with diverse sectors, including governments, international organizations, and non-governmental research, advocacy and trade groups. His influence can be seen in the achievement and implementation of the Biological Weapons Convention and Chemical Weapons Convention, and in his influence on CBW scholarship. This book details his life and work through chapters by people that knew him best - his widow, a close colleague, his son, and a dear friend - alongside reprints of a selection of his publications chosen by his research partners, family and friends, and a bibliography of his CBW writings.

Fertile land, waterpower, energetic residents, and a sea serpent all contributed to the growth of the town and village of Perry. The town of Perry was first settled in 1807, and later took the name of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the hero of the War of 1812. Early mills along Silver Creek provided materials for the growing village, which was incorporated in 1830. Perry made headlines in 1855, when a sea serpent was sighted on Silver Lake and people flocked to the area. The mystery went unsolved until remains of the hoax were found in the ashes of the Walker House in 1857. Perry continued to grow, with Main Street businesses changing with the needs of residents. Later industries replaced the early mills, and immigrants arrived to work in the textile factories. Educational, religious, and civic buildings were added to the community, and farms grew in the countryside.
Interpreting Tyler Perry
Tyler Perry has become a significant figure in media due to his undeniable box office success led by his character Madea and popular TV sitcoms House of Payne and Meet the Browns. Perry built a multimedia empire based largely on his popularity among African American viewers and has become a prominent and dominant cultural storyteller. Along with Perry’s success has come scrutiny by some social critics and Hollywood well-knowns, like Spike Lee, who have started to deconstruct the images in Perry’s films and TV shows suggesting, as Lee did, that Perry has used his power to advance stereotypical depictions of African Americans. The book provides a rich and thorough overview of Tyler Perry’s media works. In so doing, contributors represent and approach their analyses of Perry’s work from a variety of theoretical and methodological angles. The main themes explored in the volume include the representation of (a) Black authenticity and cultural production, (b) class, religion, and spirituality, (c) gender and sexuality, and (d) Black love, romance, and family. Perry’s critical acclaim is also explored.
