Margaret Sidney was the pseudonym of American writer Harriett Mulford Stone Lothrop (June 22, 1844 - August 2, 1924). In addition to writing popular children's stories, she ran her husband Daniel Lothrop's publishing company after his death. After they bought The Wayside country house, they worked hard to make it a center of literary life. BIOGRAPHY: Harriett Mulford Stone was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1844. The daughter of New Haven architect, Sidney Mason Stone, she was "brought up in an atmosphere of culture and learning enhanced by free access to her father's large library."From early girlhood she "delighted in creating imaginary people". She was educated at seminaries near her home and graduated from Miss Dutton's School at Grove Hall in New Haven in 1862. While a student there "she displayed such mental alertness, combined with retentive memory and a great imaginative and poetic talent that she was marked for future success." She traveled extensively in the United States, and began creating literary compositions early in life.According to a Hartford Courant article, "she wrote constantly but destroyed manuscripts". She published nothing until 1878 when, at the age of 34, she began sending short stories to Wide Awake, a children's magazine in Boston. Two of her stories, "Polly Pepper's Chicken Pie" and "Phronsie Pepper's New Shoes", proved to be very popular with readers. Ella Farman, the editor of the magazine, requested that Stone write more. The success of Harriett's short stories prompted her to write Five Little Peppers and its 11 sequels. The original novel was first published in 1881, the year that Stone married Daniel Lothrop. Daniel had founded the D. Lothrop Company of Boston, who published Harriett's books under her pseudonym, Margaret Sidney. Harriett and Daniel may have both had an interest in history and in famous authors. In 1883, they purchased the house in which both Louisa May Alcott and Nathaniel Hawthorne had lived. Nicknamed The Wayside, the house is located in Concord, Massachusetts. The year after Harriett and Daniel moved into the house, Harriett gave birth to their daughter, Margaret, at the age of 40. Daniel Lothrop died on Friday, March 18, 1892, when Harriett was 48 and their daughter was just 9 years old. There was a gap in the release of the Five Little Peppers books from 1892 to 1897, while Harriett continued to run the publishing company Daniel founded. Eventually, she sold the company, which later became Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Co. It continued to publish Harriett's books under the name Margaret Sidney when Harriett resumed writing the Five Little Peppers series.....

This book will help readers understand and appreciate the sonnets and songs that make up Philip Sidney’s Astrophil and Stella, widely regarded as one of the greatest sonnet collections in English literary history. The author provides commentary on each of the 108 sonnets and 11 songs, explaining how each poem contributes to the plot of the story—a compelling tale of a love that is at once beautiful, true, heartfelt, frustrating, stressful, and unrequited. The author illustrates how Sidney riffs brilliantly on the sonnet form, fills his poetry with striking and inventive imagery and metaphor, and uses rhythms and forms rarely used before in English poetry. He discusses the story’s historical, cultural, and biographical contexts, highlighting those sonnets and songs that indicate Astrophil is modelled on Sidney himself, and Penelope on Lady Penelope Devereux, the beautiful daughter of the Earl of Essex and Maid of Honor in the Court of Queen Elizabeth I.

Courtier, poet, soldier, diplomat - Philip Sidney was one of the most promising young men of his age. Son of Elizabeth I's deputy in Ireland, nephew and heir to her favourite, Leicester, he was tipped for high office - and even to inherit the throne. But Sidney soon found himself caught up in the intricate politics of Elizabeth's court and forced to become as Machiavellian as everyone around him if he was to achieve his ambitions. Against a backdrop of Elizabethan intrigue and the battle between Protestant and Catholic for predominance in Europe, Alan Stewart tells the riveting story of Philip Sidney's struggle to suceed. Seeing that his continental allies had a greater sense of his importance that his English contamporaries, Philip turned his attention to Europe. He was made a French baron at seventeen, corresponded with leading foreign scholars, considered marriage proposals from two princesses and, at the time of his tragically early death, was being openly spoken of as the next ruler of the Netherlands.

Some people are bigger than life - they just are. Sidney Johnston Catts, Florida's 22nd Governor was one of those people. In 1917, Catt became the first Governor of Florida since 1877 (during the period of Reconstruction) to represent a party other than the Democratic Party. As of this date, Catts remains the only person ever elected to a statewide office on the Prohibition ticket. However, Catts was more than just a "third-party" leader.Florida, as was the rest of America, was in turmoil for decades after the end of the Civil War. Racism, anti-foreignism, and anti-Catholicism were rampant. The states of the old Confederacy were even more receptive to intolerance than the rest of the country. This led to the rise of several loud and rambunctious demagogues. The populists won elections across the South with wild, emotional appeals to religious and racial bigotry. If the mass of voters did not agree with the intolerance preached by these men, enough did agree to elect them to afford them great power. Florida's most important addition to the Southern demagoguery was Sidney J. Catts. Catts enjoyed a meteoric rise in Florida beginning in 1916 and while he only won one election, he remained an important political figure in Sunshine State until around 1930. While many condemned Catts, and often for good reason, one cannot doubt he made some important and positive changes in the Sunshine State during his single term as Governor.Catts was a natural born earth shaker. He also threw convention to the wind. After the Florida Democratic Party connived with the State Supreme Court and denied him the Democratic nomination for Governor that he rightly won, he accepted the nomination of the Prohibition Party, defied all odds, and won the General Election. This brief volume sketches the life and political career of Sidney Catts. It is a fair accounting of Catts the man and Catts the politician. There is no doubt that Sydney Catts was a great reformer and there is no doubt that he was a raging bigot. It would not be fair to the reader, or to Catts, to leave out either side of his story. This book also looks at the age in which Catts lived and the attitudes of that age.

The chief object of this volume is to exhibit, in a manner acceptable to readers who are not specialists, the application of the principles and methods which guide investigations into popular traditions to a few of the most remarkable stories embodying the Fairy superstitions of the Celtic and Teutonic peoples. Some of the subjects discussed have already been dealt with by more competent inquirers. But even in these cases I have sometimes been able to supply additional illustrations of the conclusions previously arrived at, and occasionally, I hope, to carry the argument a step or two further than had been done before. I have thus tried to render the following pages not wholly valueless to students.
