They also learn about special visitors to the beach, including monk seals, sea turtles, and a variety of shorebirds. Readers learn what tides are, and how changing tides affect the nature of seashore life. This book helps young seashore explorers identify some of the many curious and beautiful creatures they might find as they journey from the higher rocks along the shore that only get salt spray and occasional big waves, to life that stays submerged among the shallow rocks and sands in tidepools. Readers discover special areas called limestone benches and anchialine pools, and learn what to look for that lives in these places. All living systems in nature need our respect and protection, and Hawaiian seashores are no exception. This book, like others in the Discover series, concludes with some suggestions of simple things each one of us can do to help. Full color illustrations on every page.
