The first book of its kind, Marlowe's Ovid explores and analyzes in depth the relationship between the Elegies-Marlowe's translation of Ovid's Amores-and Marlowe's own dramatic and poetic works. Stapleton carefully considers Marlowe's Elegies in the context of his seven known dramatic works and his epyllion, Hero and Leander, and offers a different way to read Marlowe. Stapleton employs Marlowe's rendition of the Amores as a way to read his seven dramatic productions and his narrative poetry while engaging with previous scholarship devoted to the accuracy of the translation and to bibliographical issues. The author focuses on four main principles: the intertextual relationship of the Elegies to the rest of the author's canon; its reflection of the influence of Erasmian humanist pedagogy, imitatio and aemulatio; its status as the standard English Amores until the Glorious Revolution, part of the larger phenomenon of pan-European Renaissance Ovidianism; its participation in the genre of the sonnet sequence. He explores how translating the Amores into the Elegies profited Marlowe as a writer, a kind of literary archaeology that explains why he may have commenced such an undertaking. A moving story of a young cockney boy's experiences as an evacuee in WWII.In late 1939, just before his sixth birthday, cockney lad Eddie Stapleton was sent out of London to escape the Blitz. Initially evacuated to Seaford in Sussex, he was soon moved again, this time to Hay on Wye. Separated from his older sisters, after a rather unhappy time, he eventually found love and security in the home of an elderly spinster he called 'Auntie Kit'.This book is is a collection of Eddie's reminiscences of his life as an evacuee. Written with passion, poignancy and a keen eye for detail, Eddie takes the reader into a long-gone world. Its characters, sights, sounds and even smells are evoked by the author in sensitive descriptions of his experiences, and perceptive character sketches of the adults he encountered. Above all, the book is a tribute to the remarkable lady who gave him not just lodgings, but a home.
No history of the longstanding critical tradition of exploring the Spenser-Ovid relationship has been written. In this book Professor Stapleton constructs such a critical history: the annotations of E. K. in The Shepheardes Calender (1579), the Enlightenment editions of The Faerie Queene, the philological mode of the Spenser Variorum (1932–57), and the recent, innovative work of Harry Berger and Colin Burrow. Aside from occasional articles, no truly comprehensive analysis of their kinship as love poets exists, either. The author explores Spenser’s emulation of Ovid’s amatory poetics. His humanist education trained him to find or construct analogues and etiological patterns in classical texts. Therefore, his early study of translation, intensive reading, and "versifying" as an interrelated process guaranteed a densely allusive, metamorphic Ovidian poetics as a natural result. The author's predecessors focus almost exclusively on the Metamorphoses as intertext, but do not often distinguish between early modern Latin editions of the poem and translations such as Arthur Golding's. Although Spenser read Ovid in his native language, during the quarter-century of his writing career, his countrymen such as Shakespeare, Donne, and Lodge imitate and recast the ancient author. During this English aetas Ovidiana, a translation industry arises simultaneously so that the entire corpus is rendered into English, from Golding's Metamorphoses (1567) to Wye Saltonstall's Ex Ponto (1638). Since the sixteenth century did not often read or hear a Roman poet in prose renditions, the author uses Renaissance poetical verse translations (with the Latin text) to explore Spenser's variegated use of Ovid: how he sounded as early modern English poetry. The introduction traces a history of the Spenser-Ovid site then accounts for the importance of imitatio and moralization to Spenser's developing poetics. The first four chapters analyze the influence of the Tristia, Heroides, and Metamorphoses on the 1590 Faerie Queene and The Shepheardes Calender. The concluding chapters demonstrate the presence of the Ars amatoria and Amores in Amoretti and Epithalamion and Fowre Hymnes. Spenser's Ovidian Poetics is intended to complement works such as Leonard Barkan's The Gods Made Flesh, Jonathan Bate's Shakespeare and Ovid, Raphael Lyne's Ovid's Changing Worlds: English Metamorphoses 1567–1632, and important essays by Colin Burrow. In the words of Paul Alpers, Professor Stapleton does not wish "to oppose the historical aesthetic" but to understand Spenser's "claim to relative autonomy" in his emulation and reconfiguration of his predecessors.
Admired and Understood analyzes Behn's only pure verse collection, Poems upon Several Occasions (1684), and situates her in her literary milieu. Her book demonstrates her desire for acceptance in her literary culture, to be 'admired and understood,' the antithesis of what many surmise from reading her other works—that she saw herself primarily as a guerilla critic of her culture's views on race, class, and gender. Although the collapse of the market for new plays in the 1680s probably drove Behn to poetry and later to fiction, other factors explain her devotion to her collection. One may have been the status associated with writing poetry as opposed to plays and stories. The title of poet was her culture's ultimate literary currency. She apparently never wished to be seen as a 'woman writer,' and viewed such labels as reductive, unfair, and inaccurate. Published in 1684, playwright Aphra Behn's Poems Upon Several Occasions is her only collection of pure verse. In this study, Stapleton analyzes these poems and situates Behn in her literary milieu. Topics include the influence of Abraham Cowley on Behn's poetics, Behn's understanding of libertinism, and the textual history of 'On a Juniper-Tree.'

POP! Design, Culture, Fashion 1955-1976 explores the impact of music, art and personality on the development of the design and fashion of the times. Published to accompany an exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum, London, July - October 2012. Pop! Design, Culture, Fashion 1956-1976 covers all aspects of Pop design in Britain and America, from early rock 'n' roll to punk. It looks at record covers and packaging designs by Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Peter Blake and Richard Hamilton, and the work of fashion designers such as Mary Quant, Barbara Hulanicki from Biba, Vivienne Westwood and John Stephen of Carnaby Street fame, as well as their contemporaries in America such as Betsey Johnson of Paraphernalia. Pop graphics are also covered, from the psychedelic posters of Alan Aldridge, and the design collective 'Hapdash and the Coloured Coat' to rock posters from San Francisco and the west coast of America. There are also reproductions of rarely-seen underground magazines such as Oz, Gandalf's Garden, l' Actuel and the International Times. The ephemeral nature of much of Pop design is explored - from paper furniture and 'throwaway' paper dresses, to longer-lasting trends such as Union Jack clothing, metal badges, machine-embroidered denim, printed t-shirts and tin badges. The book also looks at the work of 'Them', an influential group of 'Baroque Pop' designers who coalesced around Zandra Rhodes in the early 70s, and ends with the anti-design of punk fashion by Vivienne Westwood, and the self-proclaimed 'horrible by design' punk graphics of Jamie Reid. Whilst there have been innumerable books on the Swinging Sixties, and on Pop Art, this is the first book to look at Pop design over a twenty year span, and to examine the interconnected nature of so many elements of the phenomenon such as books and magazines, music, film, fashion and graphic art. It is also unique in that the illustrations are not sourced from the usual magazine archive images, but are photographs of the artefacts themselves, from Elton John's waistcoat, embroidered with suns, stars and rainbows, to Twiggy coathangers, psychedelic book covers and every teenager's must-have item: 'Glo Glo boots for Go Go girls'. Geoff Rayner and Richard Chamberlain are experts in post-war design, specialising in the history of textiles. A compelling vision for reimagining climate change education through the intertwined practices of data storytelling and justice-centered learning In Making Climate Justice Count, Asli Sezen-Barrie, Mary K. Stapleton, and Hosun Kang address a central problem in climate change education: the disconnect between data-driven science instruction and students' lived, cultural, and emotional understandings of climate impacts. As our capacity to generate and visualize data grows, so does our responsibility to teach students not only how to use data but how to care about it, question it, and apply it with integrity. Too often, data are presented as objective and detached instead of being actively shaped by the experiences they represent—or exclude. This book offers a pathway to bridge that gap by showing how storytelling can humanize data and make it meaningful across diverse contexts. By meaningfully engaging with climate change data, and collecting local data of their own, students gain a deeper understanding of how knowledge is produced and used in decisions that matter to their communities. Arguing that climate change education must be rooted in both data and in the lived stories of communities most affected by environmental change, the authors provide evidence-based pedagogical strategies that educators can utilize to create innovative, effective, and engaging lessons. Research has shown that young babies - well before they form their first bond to a caring adult - enjoy participating in groups and group processes. Babies in Groups examines the consequences of these findings for science, for early education practice and policy, and for adult psychotherapy. The authors report research showing the extensive capacity of preverbal infants for group-communication in all-baby trios and quartets, backed by findings about primate sociability, the social brain, cultural histories, and human evolution. These studies open up new ways of imagining human development as fundamentally group-based. In addition, the authors explore the changes that a group-based vision of infancy could bring to early child education and care. They also show how ignoring group contexts in many clinical traditions can distort descriptions of what happens in therapy, producing such unintended consequences as 'mother-blaming' for the future problems an infant may experience as she or he grows up. Finally, the book's appendix summarises the main forms of evidence which falsify claims that science has proven that an inborn gift for dyadic 'intersubjectivity,' or for one-to-one infant-adult attachments, founds human social development.

Educational reform is a constant in New Mexico, as is the influence of politics since nearly one-half of the state's budget goes to education. But several other significant themes emerge.
