The inspiring true story of Victoria Chung (1897-1966), who pursued her dreams against all odds to become the first Chinese-Canadian doctor.Named for the city in which she was born, Victoria, British Columbia, Victoria Chung was the daughter of Chinese immigrants. Despite racist laws that initially prevented her from attending public school, and sexist attitudes that prevented many women from pursuing careers in the sciences, Victoria had an ambitious dream--to become a doctor and help heal people around the world. Her unrelenting pursuit of education led her to become the first Asian-Canadian to study medicine at her university, where she faced further racism and sexism from some students and professors, and eventually became the first woman resident in her hospital. But Victoria was not done breaking down barriers. She travelled to China, the birthplace of her parents, and worked to give women and children the same medical care as men. She became the head doctor of her hospital and introduced modern technologies and practices to ensure that her patients received the best care possible. Today, more than half a century after her death, her accomplishments, ambition, and compassion are remembered in both Canada and China.

Victoria Hall, the "Grand Lady" of Gottingen Street has always been a spectacular example of French, Second Empire elaborate, decorative style of architecture in the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Its external beauty and prominence was obvious to many for almost a century and a half. However few ever ventured inside or even knew who lived there except when invited to the annual events open to the public. This story is an inside view of not just a decor but a snapshot of some of the people, their lives, their experiences, the secrets, the rumours and the hauntings.

An extraordinary history of the most heroic actions of World War Two. Perfect for readers of Ant Middleton, Damien Lewis and Ben MacIntyre. The Victoria Cross is the British military's highest and most prestigious award. During the course of World War Two, one hundred and eighty two Victoria Crosses were awarded for valour 'in the presence of the enemy' to men who fought on land, at sea and in the air.Although these medals are usually associated with individual acts of heroism, C. E. Lucas Phillips uncovers the extraordinary battles in which multiple Victoria Crosses were won. From Crete to Burma, the Atlantic to North Africa, Lucas Phillips explores the daring exploits of Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans, Gurkhas and Britons as they performed courageous acts that saw them, often posthumously, awarded with the highest honour.Victoria Cross Battles of the Second World War chronicles not just the heroic actions themselves but also provides insight into the wider battles and war, utilising first-hand evidence to graphically depict these extraordinary moments that punctuated the long, brutal conflict.'The author brings a tenseness to his narrative which enables the reader to live through the experiences he describes' RUSI Journal'A serious and lively contribution to military history' Times Literary Supplement

‘He seems perfection and I think that I have the prospect of very great happiness before me…’ Victoria in a letter of 15 October 1839One of the greatest royal love matches of all time was that of Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert. The English princess, born at Kensington Palace in 1819, and the German prince were cousins, and first met when Victoria was 16. At their second meeting in 1839 she, by now Queen Victoria, proposed to him and they married the following year.Victoria and Albert’s romance marked a turning point for Britain’s royal family, and to the queen in particular love and marriage proved a source of strength and comfort. The two young people were brought together, like so many royal couples, by the scheming of matchmakers. The aftermath was not always easy. Albert’s adopted country remained wary of his intelligence and seriousness, most people as unaware of his private playfulness as they were of the contrasting aspects of Victoria’s own character.Victoria and Albert tells of a young couple’s love: how the two grew up, what they were like, how they first met. Love deepened within their marriage, as they became partners in private and in public, at home with their family and ever on duty as sovereign and consort. This beautifully illustrated book is part of the Pitkin Royal Collection series, celebrating the lives of the British royal family. Other notable titles in this insightful series include Royal Babies, The Queen and Her Family and Queen Elizabeth II.

When 25-year old Private Johnson Beharry won the Victoria Cross in 2005 for bravery under fire in Iraq, he was the first person to win Britain's highest military honour since the Falklands war in 1982 and the first living recipient since 1969, when two Australians were given the award for action in Vietnam.Born out of the squalor of the Crimean War in 1856 and the fragility of the monarchy at that time, the VC's prestige is such that it takes precedence over all other orders and medals in Britain. But while many books have been written about specific aspects of the VC and its recipients, none have asked why so many brave men who deserved the medal were denied it, and why no women have ever been awarded the VC, even though they are entitled. Military historian Gary Mead's vivid and balanced account of the VC's life and times exposes the hypocrisy behind one of the UK's last sacred cows, and explores its role as a barometer for the shifting sands of political and social change during the last 150 years.

On the eve of her coronation, Victoria is having a bath. Out of her chimney falls Edward 'The Boy' Jones. Again. Adored by the tabloids and hated by the establishment, his repeated break-ins to the palace remain a mystery to all. Except Victoria. An epic romcom, Victoria's Knickers tells the story of an unlikely romance between the Queen of England and a boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Will the teenage lovers survive a power-crazed Lord Conroy, the Chartists and Prince Albert? Set against the backdrop of an uncertain England and with original songs from Chris Cookson, Josh Azouz's play Victoria's Knickers is an irreverent tale of passion and violence told with an anarchic heart and a razor-sharp wit. The play premiered at Soho Theatre, London, in October 2018, performed by the National Youth Theatre and directed by Ned Bennett.
