From award-winning author Alex Gino comes a groundbreaking novel for children about how important the past can be those trying to create a different future. Sam is very in touch with their own queer identity. They're nonbinary, and their best friend, TJ, is nonbinary as well. Sam's family is very cool with it ... as long as Sam remembers that nonbinary kids are also required to clean their rooms, do their homework, and try not to antagonize their teachers too much. The teacher-respect thing is hard when it comes to Sam's history class, because their teacher seems to believe that only Dead Straight Cis White Men are responsible for history. When Sam's home borough of Staten Island opens up a contest for a new statue, Sam finds the perfect non-DSCWM subject: photographer Alice Austen, whose house has been turned into a museum, and who lived with a female partner for decades. Soon, Sam's project isn't just about winning the contest. It's about discovering a rich queer history that Sam's a part of — a queer history that no longer needs to be quiet, as long as there are kids like Sam and TJ to stand up for it. For fans of MELISSA and RICK Featuring two non-binary protagonists A powerful story to empower kids to think about the history they are traditionally taught and what it means to be included!

One `golden afternoon' in Oxford, in July 1862, the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, accompanied three young sisters, Lorina, Alice, and Edith, on a boating trip. To keep the children amused, Dodgson, began to tell a tale about an inquisitive youngster called Alice, and her escapades in an underground world. Two years later, on the urgings of the heroine, Alice Liddell, he wrote the tale down and gave it to her as an early Christmas gift. Dodgson's story, later revised and illustrated by John Tenniel, would go on to become one of the most famous and best-loved children's books of all time - published as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, under the pen name Lewis Carroll. However, the original tale - Alice's Adventures Under Ground - remains less well-known. In this facsimile edition of Dodgson's manuscript - now one of the British Library's most treasured possessions - with its accompanying commentary by former British Library curator Sally Brown, modern readers can enjoy the expressive story as it was first told.

Alice Munro's standing as a major contemporary author has long been acknowledged in her native Canada, especially among her fellow writers. Her reputation developed slowly, from small magazines and radio in the fifties, to three Governor General's Awards and regular appearances in The New Yorker. As a short story writer she is working within a critically neglected genre. Yet short fiction displays an intensity of language and experience that is rarely sustainable across longer forms. Drawing on Bakhtinian theory, Ailsa Cox looks at ways in which Munro develops the short story's affinity with the present moment to suggest a fluid and ever-changing reality.

Jo Kingsley; Alice Kingsley

Alice in the Looking Glass is a moving memoir written by a mother and her anorexic daughter, Alice. In the first part of the book Jo Kingsley writes with raw intensity about Alice's illness and what she hopes is her recovery. At ten, Alice was an easy-going, free-spirited child. At eleven, she started to develop her 'rigmaroles' - little rituals which grew into severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - and then, at fourteen, turned into anorexia. Jo describes her journey through 'Planet Anorexia', recognising the amazing support she received and telling of the long periods of despair, guilt, anger and, as the mother of a much-loved child, sheer terror. By writing this book her wish is to pass on her experiences as, to share all her doubts, failures, anxieties and eventually some successes in the hope of supporting other families going through the same trauma. In the second part of the book Alice, now eighteen and on the road to recovery, also looks back over the past eight years. She writes vividly and honestly about herself, her illness, her treatment and recovery. Finally, Jo brings the story up to date and offers guidance and hope to others who love and care for an anorexic child.

Alice Keppel, youngest daughter of a Scottish retired admiral and MP emerged from obscurity in 1898 to become the publicly acknowledged mistress of the portly, fun-loving Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII. Agnes Keyser, daughter of a prominent member of the Stock exchange, defied social expectations by not marrying, instead becoming involved in hospital charity work. Her twelve-year relationship with the king was much less in the public eye, but was just as important.

Ever wanted to illustrate a book? Now you can. 'What is the use of a book, ' thought Alice 'without pictures or conversations?' In Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland a bored Alice follows a White Rabbit down a hole and into a bizarre world where nothing makes sense – especially not the people or animals who live there. Here, the original story is accompanied by empty frames waiting to be filled with your own art. Bring Alice, the White Rabbit and the Queen of Hearts to life in your unique version of this classic tale and capture the grin of the Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts playing croquet with a flamingo and a tea party with the Hatter, March Hare and Dormouse.
