Ireland, 1798-1998 - politics and war

Alvin Jackson

Blackwell Publishers
1999
pokkari
Alvin Jackson's Ireland 1798–1998 reappraises apparently rigid political divides and apparently decisive turning–points. The varieties of Irish political experience, and their complex interrelationship, are fully explored: particular attention is paid to the (often highly productive) tension between nationalism and Unionism. The work begins and ends with the close of a century, and spans a discrete period in Irish history. Striking comparisons are drawn between the crises of the late eighteenth century and the very rapid change experienced in the late twentieth century. Jackson's approach in Ireland 1798–1998 is throughout analytical, sceptical and humane. The book offers students and the general reader a fresh interpretation of modern Irish political history and provides perceptive insights into some familiar issues and personalities of the period. Drawing on original research and the latest secondary literature, the book is a stylish, stimulating and accessible survey of 200 years of Irish history.

For over a decade, international poets Alvin Pang (Singapore) and George Szirtes (UK) have met time and again-as friends and fellow wordsmiths on page and stage-until the Covid-19 pandemic struck. Confined to different sides of the globe, they began to write poems back and forth in response to one another. Reflecting on the circumstances in which we find ourselves living, the two poets dance in language through questions of life and time, with the world teetering from Covid through Black Lives Matters and Brexit to the Ukraine conflict.

Epistemology and Cognition

Epistemology and Cognition

Alvin I. Goldman

Whatever the target of our effort to know—whether we probe the origin of the cosmos, the fabric of man-made symbols and culture, or simply the layout of our immediate environment—all knowledge is grounded in natural cognitive capacities. Philosophers of knowledge must therefore make use of the science of cognition. So argues a leading epistemologist in this work of fundamental importance to philosophical thinking.Against the traditional view, Alvin Goldman argues that logic, probability theory, and linguistic analysis cannot by themselves delineate principles of rationality or justified belief. The mind’s operations must be taken into account. Part I of his book lays the foundations of this view by addressing the major topics of epistemology: skepticism, knowledge, justification, and truth. Drawing parallels with ethical theory, it provides criteria for evaluating belief formation, problem solving, and probability judgment. Part II examines what cognitive scientists have learned about the basic processes of the mind-brain: perception, memory, representational constraints, internal codes, and so on. Looking at reliability, power, and speed, Goldman lays the groundwork for a balanced appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of human mental processes. In establishing a theoretical framework for the link between epistemology and cognitive science, Alvin Goldman does nothing less than redirect the entire field of study.
Civil War In The American West

Civil War In The American West

Alvin M. Josephy

As most Americans of the 1860s fixed their attention on the battlefields of Shiloh and Manassas, another war raged on the largely unsettled Western frontier. This splendid work by the author of The Patriot Chiefs restores this "other" Civil War to its true, epic proportions. With formidable scholarship and irresistible narrative ease, Alvin M. Josephy, Jr., tells of the Yankee armada that foundered in the Louisiana bayous; of the bloody fighting on the ridges and prairies of the border states. where a Cherokee guerrilla leader was the last Confederate general to surrender -- two months after Appomattox: and of the U.S. Army's brutal campaigns against the Plains Indians in theaters as far apart as Minnesota and Colorado. "Marvelous, original...that great, adventurous, little-known side of the Civil War...is all here for the first time: the clash of North and South set in the immense space of the West and peopled with some of the most vivid characters of that vivid time." -- David McCullough"Only occasionally does one find such a felicitous pairing of author and subject as in this important new book.... Mr. Josephy again serves justice with his clear-eyed, even-handed scholarship.... The entire era is cast into a different light by this powerfully wrought narrative."-- The New York Times Book Review"A sweeping and often surprising account of the untold stories of the war between the states." -- Los Angeles Times
Foundations for Purposeful Church Administration
Highly acclaimed and widely used, this text shows what church tasks must be undertaken, why they are important, and the guiding theological principles required to achieve them. Alvin J. Lindgren clarifies the present confusion about what church administration is and what its place in the church should be. He provides a concept of church administration for the student of theology, and a new, more effective overview for the working pastor frustrated by current demands and procedures.

* Caldecott Medal Winner * ALA Notable Book * The classic Caldecott Medal-winning picture book about a neighborhood transformed by a delightful snowfall, from the legendary picture book duo Alvin Tresselt and Roger Duvoisin. When the first flakes fell from the grey sky, the postman and the farmer and the policeman and his wife scurried about doing all the practical things grown-ups do when a snowstorm comes. All the wonder and delight a child feels in a snowfall is caught in the pages of this book--the frost ferns on the windowsill, the snowman in the yard and the mystery and magic of a new white world.Roger Duvoisin's pictures in soft blue half-tones with brilliant splashes of yellow and red emphasize the happiness and humor as well as the poetic quality of the text. * An ALA Notable Book * Horn Book Fanfare * Award-winning author Alvin Tresselt retells the traditional Ukrainian folktale in his most popular children's book, The Mitten. Deep in the woods on the coldest day of winter a little boy drops his mitten. And that lost mitten stretches and stretches--and stretches--to provide shelter for many woodland creatures. Originally published in 1964 and adapted from E. Rachev's version of the Ukrainian folktale, Yaroslava's distinctly charming illustrations and Alvin Tresselt's detailed text are as timeless and universal as the story itself.

Award-winning author Alvin Tresselt's classic story about the cycle of life is beautifully illustrated and an excellent resource for families. The Gift of the Tree reveals the role of an ancient oak tree in the cycle of nature as it dies and returns to the earth, providing nourishment for new life all around it. Originally published in 1972 under the title The Dead Tree, this story about the cycle of nature has never been more timely. Henri Sorensen's exquisite paintings for this reillustrated edition capture all the beauty and power of the tree's transformations. As School Library Journal commented: "The interdependence of plant and animal life is clearly evident, including both those that seek its shelter and those that hasten the decaying process to prepare the soil for new life. The original text stands the test of time, reaching its audience with power and emotion as it directs attention to the forces of nature at work."

Taxation in Colonial America

Taxation in Colonial America

Alvin Rabushka

Princeton University Press
2008
sidottu
Taxation in Colonial America examines life in the thirteen original American colonies through the revealing lens of the taxes levied on and by the colonists. Spanning the turbulent years from the founding of the Jamestown settlement to the outbreak of the American Revolution, Alvin Rabushka provides the definitive history of taxation in the colonial era, and sets it against the backdrop of enormous economic, political, and social upheaval in the colonies and Europe. Rabushka shows how the colonists strove to minimize, avoid, and evade British and local taxation, and how they used tax incentives to foster settlement. He describes the systems of public finance they created to reduce taxation, and reveals how they gained control over taxes through elected representatives in colonial legislatures. Rabushka takes a comprehensive look at the external taxes imposed on the colonists by Britain, the Netherlands, and Sweden, as well as internal direct taxes like poll and income taxes. He examines indirect taxes like duties and tonnage fees, as well as county and town taxes, church and education taxes, bounties, and other charges. He links the types and amounts of taxes with the means of payment--be it gold coins, agricultural commodities, wampum, or furs--and he compares tax systems and burdens among the colonies and with Britain. This book brings the colonial period to life in all its rich complexity, and shows how colonial attitudes toward taxation offer a unique window into the causes of the revolution.
