Seismic Imaging and Inversion: Volume 1

Seismic Imaging and Inversion: Volume 1

Robert H. Stolt; Arthur B. Weglein

Cambridge University Press

sidottu
Extracting information from seismic data requires knowledge of seismic wave propagation and reflection. The commonly used method involves solving linearly for a reflectivity at every point within the Earth, but this book follows an alternative approach which invokes inverse scattering theory. By developing the theory of seismic imaging from basic principles, the authors relate the different models of seismic propagation, reflection and imaging - thus providing links to reflectivity-based imaging on the one hand and to nonlinear seismic inversion on the other. The comprehensive and physically complete linear imaging foundation developed presents new results at the leading edge of seismic processing for target location and identification. This book serves as a fundamental guide to seismic imaging principles and algorithms and their foundation in inverse scattering theory, and is a valuable resource for working geoscientists, scientific programmers and theoretical physicists.

American Degree Mills: A Study of Their Operations and of Existing and Potential Ways to Control Them
American Degree Mills is a comprehensive study of the operations of degree mills in the United States, and the various ways in which they can be controlled. The book is authored by Robert H. Reid, an expert in the field of education and a former director of the Office of Educational Research and Improvement at the US Department of Education. The book provides a detailed analysis of the various types of degree mills, their methods of operation, and the harm they cause to individuals, institutions, and society at large. It also examines the legal and regulatory frameworks that currently exist to control degree mills, and identifies potential areas for improvement. The book is divided into three parts. The first part provides an overview of the degree mill phenomenon, including its history, scope, and impact. The second part examines the various types of degree mills, including diploma mills, accreditation mills, and accreditation mills. It also discusses the methods these mills use to deceive their customers, such as false advertising, fake accreditation, and the sale of fraudulent degrees. The third part of the book focuses on ways to control degree mills, including legal and regulatory measures, industry self-regulation, and public education campaigns. It also provides recommendations for policymakers, educators, and employers on how to identify and avoid degree mills, and how to promote the value of legitimate educational credentials.Overall, American Degree Mills is an essential resource for anyone interested in the issue of degree mills, including policymakers, educators, employers, and students. It provides a comprehensive and insightful analysis of this complex and important issue, and offers practical solutions for controlling degree mills and protecting the integrity of higher education. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

The voice of Jesus has for centuries been obscured and his vision skewed even by well-intended gospel writers, who transmitted his words to serve their own concerns. The Gospel of Jesus frees Jesus’ voice from the accretions of time and lets his challenging wisdom stand out as never before. This single composite gospel, created out of the sayings and reports that were deemed probably historical by the Jesus Seminar, is an essential resource for anyone seeking to detect the words of Jesus as they were heard by his earliest listeners.Features of the new edition:New introductionUpdated translation and notesExpanded index of sayings and storiesUser-friendly format
Robust Sigma Delta Converters

Robust Sigma Delta Converters

Sigma Delta converters are a very popular choice for the A/D converter in multi-standard, mobile and cellular receivers. Key A/D converter specifications are high dynamic range, robustness, scalability, low-power and low EMI. Robust Sigma Delta Converters presents a requirement derivation of a Sigma Delta modulator applied in a receiver for cellular and connectivity, and shows trade-offs between RF and ADC. The book proposes to categorize these requirements in 5 quality indicators which can be used to qualify a system, namely accuracy, robustness, flexibility, efficiency and emission. In the book these quality indicators are used to categorize Sigma Delta converter theory. A few highlights on each of these quality indicators are; Quality indicators: provide a means to quantify system quality.Accuracy: introduction of new Sigma Delta Modulator architectures.Robustness: a significant extension on clock jitter theory based on phase and error amplitude error models. Extension of the theory describing aliasing in Sigma Delta converters for different types of DACs in the feedback loop. Flexibility: introduction of a Sigma Delta converter bandwidth scaling theory leading to very flexible Sigma Delta converters. Efficiency: introduction of new Figure-of-Merits which better reflect performance-power trade-offs. Emission: analysis of Sigma Delta modulators on emission is not part of the bookThe quality indicators also reveal that, to exploit nowadays advanced IC technologies, things should be done as much as possible digital up to a limit where system optimization allows reducing system margins. At the end of the book Sigma Delta converter implementations are shown which are digitized on application-, architecture-, circuit- and layout-level.Robust Sigma Delta Converters is written under the assumption that the reader has some background in receivers and in A/D conversion.

World's Fairs on the Eve of War

Since the first world's fair in London in 1851, at the dawn of the era of industrialization, international expositions served as ideal platforms for rival nations to showcase their advancements in design, architecture, science and technology, industry, and politics. Before the outbreak of World War II, countries competing for leadership on the world stage waged a different kind of war—with cultural achievements and propaganda—appealing to their own national strengths and versions of modernity in the struggle for power. World's Fairs on the Eve of War examines five fairs and expositions from across the globe—including three that were staged (Paris, 1937; Dusseldorf, 1937; and New York, 1939-40), and two that were in development before the war began but never executed (Tokyo, 1940; and Rome, 1942). This coauthored work considers representations of science and technology at world's fairs as influential cultural forces and at a critical moment in history, when tensions and ideological divisions between political regimes would soon lead to war.

Many ideas once thought to be foundational to Christianity are now known to be false due to scientific discoveries regarding the nature of the universe and historical findings about how Christianity began. Is Christianity doomed to irrelevance or even extinction? How might Christianity reinvent itself so that it can address the real concerns of people in today's world? This collection of essays from such leading thinkers as Karen Armstrong and John Shelby Spong addresses questions such as life after death, the meaning of God, apocalypticism, and the significance of Jesus' death.Contributors: Karen Armstrong, Don Cupitt, Arthur J. Dewey, Robert W. Funk, Lloyd Geering, Roy W. Hoover, Robert J. Miller, Stephen J. Patterson, Bernard Brandon Scott, John Shelby Spong
