Little Bo Peep Flip-Side Rhymes

Little Bo Peep Flip-Side Rhymes

Christopher Harbo

Picture Window Books

Little Bo Peep lost her sheep, but what if the sheep told the rhyme? In this novel approach to nursery rhymes, half the book holds the classic rhyme, while the flip side holds a fractured version that starts from the back. Whimsical art adds to the flip side fun of this big book.

A Kirkus Best Book selected for PRIDE Month Have you ever been faced by the overwhelming feeling of I DON’T WANT TO? Koko has. Koko doesn’t want to go home, Koko doesn’t want to go to sleep, and Koko doesn’t want to get up either! But Bo, the key caretaker and adult in Koko's life, is patient. Bo knows that Koko will come home when bored, go to sleep when tired, and get up when hungry-as long as Koko is allowed to learn through experience and to have the chance to figure things out. Koko & Bo is a familiar, smart, and surprising story about two people––one big and one small––quietly negotiating the relationship between freedom and trust to reach a better understanding of each other and the world around them. Depicted as fluid characters, both Koko and Bo each break down gender stereotypes, allowing readers to easily identify with either character. As for the testing of limits and negotiations, those are universal to every relationship between two people who love and trust each other.

Women under the Bo Tree examines the tradition of female world-renunciation in Buddhist Sri Lanka. The study is textual, historical and anthropological, and links ancient tradition with contemporary practice. Tessa Bartholomeusz utilizes data based on her field experiences in many contemporary cloisters of Sri Lanka, and on original archival research. She explores the history of the re-emergence of Buddhist female renouncers in the late nineteenth century after a hiatus of several hundred years; the reasons why women renounce; the variety of expressions of female world-renunciation; and, above all, attitudes about women and monasticism that have either prohibited women from renouncing or have encouraged them to do so. One of the most striking discoveries of the study is that the fortunes of Buddhist female renouncers is tied to the fortunes of Buddhism in Sri Lanka more generally, and to perceived notions of Sri Lanka as the caretaker of Buddhism.

The posters, activities and the Teacher's Guide have all been revised to provide fresh, new ideas to try out in the classroom. One dark, dark night is a title in the Little Library Literacy Kit. Summary: The main concepts taught include domestic or farm animals, animal sounds, opposites and sequencing. Additional concepts include fears, dangers and families.
