Prisoner of Cage Farm

Prisoner of Cage Farm

Cecelia Frey

University of Calgary Press

A heartland novel set in post-war rural Alberta, The Prisoner of Cage Farm evokes Canadian prairie classics like Martha Ostenso's Wild Geese and F. P. Grove's Settlers of the Marsh. The McFaddens are a well-to-do country family who occupy Thorncliffe Heights in rural Alberta. Across the road, the Cage Farm can barely keep its household together. Still, Lewis McFadden, war veteran and incurable romantic, is hopelessly infatuated with the beautiful and mysterious Isabel Cage. Enter Emiline Thomas who answers a newspaper ad to be Isabel's tutor at the Cage Farm.Coming from big-city Toronto, Emiline is soon exposed to the harsh and uncompromising effect of the prairie landscape on her ability to survive an isolating and lonely experience. In a time before electricity, paved roads, and reliable vehicles, the clash between Emiline's urban upbringing and the Cage's monotonous prairie existence is inevitable. In this vast expanse of loneliness, a secret within Emiline unleashes a tragic chain of events that begs the question: who exactly is the prisoner of Cage Farm?Frey's novel disrupts the legacy of stereotypical notions of prairie life while building on gothic genres of great writers of the past like the Brontë sisters.

Mary Edna Fraser has taken the art of batik to otherworldly heights. An internationally renowned artist, Fraser has had works grace galleries, museums, and public buildings throughout the United States - creating wonder, awe, and an awareness of the environment around us as few artists have had the talent and vision to manage. Using fabric, wax, and dye, Fraser has transformed the techniques of batik from its ancient origins and forged new panoramas and vistas of our unique planet from the sky above us to the ground beneath our feet, and even down to the evocative landscapes that sprawl across the ocean floor. These images not only astonish us with their allure; they also remind of us of our place in the world and our responsibility to respect and care for it.Part history and guide to the challenging techniques of this form, The Batik Art of Edna Fraser affords not only a full-color introduction to Fraser's stunning perceptions of the glaciers, icebergs, coastlines, atmospheres, mountains, and rivers that grace our globe, but gives us an intimate look at the artist at work and the philosophies that guide her singular imagination as well.Bold, beautiful, thoughtful, and always visceral, Fraser's art invites us outside to see with new eyes the horizons that surround us - and inside to see ourselves in our inextricable connection with the land, the seas, the skies, the earth, as we are woven together as one in the fabric of our existence on this, our home, the vibrant blue planet hurtling through space and time.

New Lenses for Lorca: Literature, Art, and Science in the Edad de plata examines the influence of science in the thought, creative process, writing, and drawing of Federico García Lorca. This book establishes the historical, cultural, and biographical context in which Lorca encountered scientists and their work, and studies the writing and drawing of scientists he came to know at the Residencia de estudiantes in Madrid. Several of Lorca’s contemporaries who were also exploring science’s possibilities for their work in writing, art, and philosophy, including José Ortega y Gasset, Salvador Dalí, and Gregorio Marañón, are read alongside the poet. By reading particular texts among Lorca’s lectures, letters, poetry, theater, and drawings through the lens of the memoirs, lectures, and drawings of scientists such as Santiago Ramón y Cajal and Pío del Río-Hortega, a working poetics is established for each and comparisons are drawn. References to science in Lorca’s work open a new reading of some of his texts. At the same time, Ramón y Cajal and del Río-Hortega’s drawing and writing are analyzed as plastic and rhetorical works of art. The result is a study of the creative process in artist and scientist alike and their mutual influence.

The idea for this booklet was founded in my love for family members who have not yet believed in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins and the gift of eternal life in heaven. I felt lead by the Lord to prepare those who will face the feelings of loss and despair if left behind after the Rapture. Although there are those who believe that the Rapture will happen in my lifetime, as God's Word says, no one but the Father knows the day or the hour. No matter what generation experiences the Lord's return for His family, the results will be the same.I pray that this booklet touches the lives of those whom you love and that many come to the Lord before His return.May God bless you and carry you through.Cecelia Mallory, born in 1966, is the last of six children. Although her parents were loving and hard-working, a life of limited funds and challenged relationships shaped her youth. She married at the age of twenty, to a nice and hard-working man. It wasn't until she reached her late thirties and faced a troubled marriage that she gave her life to the Lord. God has been very faithful to restore her marriage and grow her faith. It is with this joy that she shares God's love with those who are still lost. Her newfound purpose is to pass on the wisdom that the Lord has graciously given her.She and her husband, Kevin, live in beautiful North Idaho and enjoy all that God chooses to give them, including forgiveness, love, and mercy and the boldness to share Him with others.Visit the author's blog: beforeigohome.blogspot.com

This book looks beyond current definitions and examples of leadership to offer a framework within which to cultivate skills and abilities of leaders for this millennium. The curriculum nurtures leadership potential in elementary gifted learners through mini-lessons and activities that are structured around the four leadership frames developed by Bolman and Deal, researchers in organizational leadership. Just five more miles. He doesn't realize he is about to be thrown into his part of Heaven's Mission. On the main street of town, people screamed and ran into buildings. A red Mazda swerved, trying to get out of the path of an 18-wheeler. The loud groan and crunching of metal and glass was the last sound she heard. Then everything went black.
