Trust within Learning provides invaluable insight into the learning relationship between students and teachers, a complex and dynamic area of research. It achieves this aim by reimagining the role of trust in the various sectors of education and exploring its import. Devin Thornburg provides invaluable insight into the learning relationship between students and teachers, a complex and dynamically-changing area of research. It does this by re-imagining the way trust encompasses different sectors of education and its importance to what and how students learn. Through interviews with students and teachers in eight countries on four continents, the author investigates the role of trust across cultures, seeking to understand the value and meaning it has in each setting. The author uses a methodology of Affirmative Inquiry through the encounters with students and teachers about trust in learning, making the effort to establish a research framework of intercultural competence. His findings are organized to explore relationships, roles, expertise and the community and cultures of trust, resulting in conclusions about the influence of history and context of schooling in each country and possible implications for practitioners and scholars. In doing so, the book raises critical questions about the teaching of culturally diverse students in the U.S. and elsewhere. It therefore informs and acts as a critical companion to those engaged in the study of learning, teaching and school reform.

Joseph's Way: The Call to Fatherly Greatness: Part IV: Prayer of a King

The fourth foundational Pillar of authentic fatherhood, the Prayer of a King, is the prayer of a father to commission his child to build the temple of the Holy Spirit in the child's person. The three components of the Prayer of a King are: first, a father's aspiration to build the temple and a sharing of this divine desire with one's own child; second, teaching or giving the child the 'materials' to build the temple of the Holy Spirit in the child's person, and third, the commissioning and blessing of the child by the father to go forth and build the temple. The confusion amongst the children of the world, the ever-increasing worship of the self-made temple, and the scattering of the flock rather than the unification of mankind in God, could be healed, to a great extent if fathers would aspire to assist their child in the project of building the temple of the Holy Spirit by teaching and blessing. The Prayer of a King demands a father to receive and accept responsibility for his role as teacher, which begins with discipline marked by self-giving love, expressed primarily in the discipline of work within the context of the family. By comparing and contrasting the fatherhood of King David with the fatherhood of the underground King Joseph, fathers will be encouraged to fulfill the dream of empowering their children in the project of building the holy temple of God.

Touted as the "Jerusalem of the Balkans," the Mediterranean port city of Salonica (Thessaloniki) was once home to the largest Sephardic Jewish community in the world. The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the city's incorporation into Greece in 1912 provoked a major upheaval that compelled Salonica's Jews to reimagine their community and status as citizens of a nation-state. Jewish Salonica is the first book to tell the story of this tumultuous transition through the voices and perspectives of Salonican Jews as they forged a new place for themselves in Greek society. Devin E. Naar traveled the globe, from New York to Salonica, Jerusalem, and Moscow, to excavate archives once confiscated by the Nazis. Written in Ladino, Greek, French, and Hebrew, these archives, combined with local newspapers, reveal how Salonica's Jews fashioned a new hybrid identity as Hellenic Jews during a period marked by rising nationalism and economic crisis as well as unprecedented Jewish cultural and political vibrancy. Salonica's Jews—Zionists, assimilationists, and socialists—reinvigorated their connection to the city and claimed it as their own until the Holocaust. Through the case of Salonica's Jews, Naar recovers the diverse experiences of a lost religious, linguistic, and national minority at the crossroads of Europe and the Middle East.

This book shows how early economic ideas structured Christian thought and society, giving crucial insight into why money holds such power in the West. Examining the religious and theological sources of money's power, it shows how early Christian thinkers borrowed ancient notions of money and economic exchange from the Roman Empire as a basis for their new theological arguments. Monetary metaphors and images, including the minting of coins and debt slavery, provided frameworks for theologians to explain what happens in salvation. God became an economic administrator, for instance, and Christ functioned as a currency to purchase humanity's freedom. Such ideas, in turn, provided models for pastors and Christian emperors as they oversaw both resources and people, which led to new economic conceptions of state administration of populations and conferred a godly aura on the use of money. Divine Currency argues that this longstanding association of money with divine activity has contributed over the centuries to money's ever increasing significance, justifying various forms of politics that manage citizens along the way. Devin Singh's account sheds unexpected light on why we live in a world where nothing seems immune from the price mechanism.

Fables meets The Fisher King in this dark, magical realist tale about a mysterious young homeless woman, an enterprising engineer with a troubled past, and a dangerous new breed of Fae, ravaged by climate change and furious with the human race. A motley collection of disturbing mythological creatures have started to stake out the land of those who damaged them--and the planet--and they aren't backing down. When Poe, an entrancing drifter and self-proclaimed changeling demands that Demond build a park to appease them, he first worries about her grasp on reality, and then, along with his family, his own. Soon, he--and the reader--must question the rationality of our entire species as Demond struggles to save his city... and maybe even the world. But are we past the point of no return? "Far-out fantasy and brutal environmental reality collide in the finest work yet from Devin Grayson, whose sophisticated storytelling is perfectly paired with the outrageously lovely visuals of Yana Adamovic. Very highly recommended."- Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Y, the Last Man) "Rewild is a profound look at what humanity has lost in the name of progress. It's beautiful, powerful, and through some magic trick simultaneously grim and hopeful." - Mark Waid (Kingdom Come) " ...a timely examination of humanity's relationship with the natural world, woven into a glorious fantasy adventure pitting man against Faerie." - Mark Buckingham (Fables)
