In May of 1890, The Christian Solider, an African American newspaper, identified the Catholic journalist and activist Daniel Arthur Rudd as the “greatest negro Catholic in America.” Yet many Catholics today are unaware of Rudd's efforts to bring about positive social change during the early decades of the Jim Crow era. In Daniel Rudd: Calling a Church to Justice, Gary Agee offers a compelling look at the life and work of this visionary who found inspiration in his Catholic faith to fight for the principles of liberty and justice. Born into slavery, Rudd achieved success early on as the publisher of the American Catholic Tribune, one of the most successful black newspapers of its era, and as the founder of the National Black Catholic Congress.Even as Rudd urged his fellow black Catholics to maintain their spiritual home within the fold of the Catholic Church, he called on that same church to live up what he believed to be her cardinal teaching, "the Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of Man." Rudd’s hopeful spirit lives on today in the important work of the National Black Catholic Congress, as it carries forward his pursuit of social justice.

A vastly informative and rare early-American pioneer autobiography rescued from obscurity. In this remarkable memoir, Daniel Parker (1781–1861) recorded both the details of everyday life and the extraordinary historical events he witnessed west of the Appalachian Mountains between 1790 and 1840. Once a humble traveling salesman for a line of newly invented clothes washing machines, he became an outspoken advocate for abolition and education. With his wife and son, he founded Clermont Academy, a racially integrated, coeducational secondary school—the first of its kind in Ohio. However, Parker's real vocation was as a self-ordained, itinerant preacher of his own brand of universal salvation. Raised by Presbyterian parents, he experienced a dramatic conversion to the Halcyon Church, an alternative, millenarian religious movement led by the enigmatic prophet Abel Sarjent, in 1803. After parting ways with the Halcyonists, he continued his own biblical and theological studies, arriving at the universalist conclusions that he would eventually preach throughout the Ohio River Valley. David Torbett has transcribed Parker's manuscript and publishes it here for the first time, together with an introduction, epilogue, bibliography, and extensive notes that enrich and contextualize this rare pioneer autobiography.
Daniel O'Connell, as we bring him into focus, after generations of bitter criticism, misrepresentation, and neglect, becomes a very modern man. The principles which he held with such consistency and expounded with such consummate eloquence are, by modern standards, enlightened, even prescient. They are wholly pertinent questions which are of deep concern to all of us. The reader of history will perceive that the span of O'Connell's life, 1775-1847, witnessed profound changes in political arrangements, in power structures, and in national boundaries in the Western world. One of the more important of these developments has been the growth of nationalism, not only here but throughout the world. As the national consciousness affected Ireland, it cannot be interpreted, even understood, except as it was awakened by O'Connell. He entered public life as an opponent of the Act of Union of 1800, a measure which was to infect British relations with Ireland for a century and a quarter. O'Connell earned and held in the Western world high rank among the individuals who promoted religious liberty and separation of Church and State, cardinal principles in the American tradition. Since the first half of his public life was devoted to the restoration of Catholic rights, he realized that he could not rationally insist upon rights for his fellow communicants which he would deny to others. His concept of true religion was of something lived wholly apart from interference or support by civil authority. As we shall see, he carried his zeal for religious liberty to the support of the Jews in their struggle to life the disabilities imposed by English law.

Two of the most dramatic and mysterious books in the Bible, Daniel and Revelation disclose many of their secrets when they're understood as the special kind of writing they are. They both use a particular literary form, known as apocalyptic, to convey their message of warning and encouragement to believers in crisis situations. This study guide equips groups to read and understand this kind of writing and to appreciate the messages of Daniel and Revelation for them today. TheUnderstanding the Books of the Bible series enables groups to take a new approach to studying the Bible together. Instead of following artificial chapter and verse divisions, these Bible study guides lead groups through whole books following their natural outlines, and pose engaging questions for discussion and personal application all along the way.

In addition to political intrigue and miraculous exploits, Daniel is filled with strange dreams, apocalyptic visions, and crucial messages for God's people. As you embark upon this study, you will see how Daniel weaves together beloved stories and startling images to form an extraordinary tapestry that shows a portrait of the God who shepherds God's people through persecution, suffering, and exile into the victorious future God has promised. A faithful reading of God's Word leads to a faithful response from God's people. The Shaped by Scripture series teaches a simple, engaging method of studying the Bible that will lead to honest interpretation and a changed relationship with God.

A significant figure in outsider, lo-fi, and alternative scenes, Daniel Johnston inspired musicians and comforted listeners for decades. From his origins in the Austin scene in the mid-1980s, where he performed at local venues while working at McDonalds, appearance on MTV and championing by Kurt Cobain, to world fame, Johnston s singular compositions and raw lyrics earned him lifelong fans. Predating his interest in music and continuing alongside it, art was Johnston s longest-running passion. This publication is the presents work spanning many decades of Johnston s drawing practice, including rare and previously unseen pieces. The artist s brightly-colored illustrations, incorporating figures from pop culture, devils, and heroes, blended with his own original characters, range from his iconic Jeremiah the Innocent Frog to surrealist landscapes. With the support of Daniel s family and estate, the first major book since his passing includes remembrances from his brother, musicians, and artists, and benefits the Hi! How Are You Project.
Daniel Arsham mines lusted-after consumer goods and iconic imagery to create his conceptual objects and sculptures. The artist then casts and refinishes his work to imitate the effects of erosion and subsidence, creating monuments to our present obsessions, as if the objects were rescued from Pompeii. That same impulse toward excavation animates many of his installations, which range from layered broken walls to geodefilled caverns to melting portals. From room-collapsing environmental installations for today s leading brands and museums to elaborate set design for classical dance, Arsham twists elements of architecture to create immersive aesthetic experiences that appeal to the divided attentions of a contemporary audience. Presented as an induction manual to Arsham s covetable world, the book will provide a complete overview of his practice. Virgil Abloh discusses Arsham s contribution to a post-media artistic landscape, a thread developed by Hans Ulrich Obrist in a conversation with the artist that traces art-historical precedents. Steven Matijcio will discuss the artist s projects and collaborations, which range from sets for Merce Cunningham s dance company to clothes and sneakers with streetwear icons Ronnie Fieg and Adidas to projects with James Franco and Pharrell Williams and films with Mahershala Ali.
A unique figure in the world of contemporary art, Daniel Brush is in equal measure artist and craftsman. Over the course of forty years, Brush has created an unparalleled body of work, whose scope ranges from large-scale abstract drawings to sculptures in steel, aluminum, and gold. Collected here are more than 150 objects that bring to the fore Brush s astonishing work with jewels. Far from the products of the world of commercial jewelry, these are jewel-encrusted objects of virtue and fantasy that reflect not just the artist s rigorous personal aesthetic and mastery of technique, but his lifelong fascinations with philosophy and Asian thought, and his exhaustive knowledge of the history of precious stones. With photography made of the objects in situ inside Brush s studio in New York City, this book presents not only a catalog of his jewel work to date, but also an ethereal portrait of the artist himself. Housed in a slipcase, with photographs by Takaaki Matsumoto and an illuminating text by Vivienne Becker, this is an intimate study of the work of a master artist and a beautiful object in itself.
