Roughly, instrumentalism is the view that science is primarily, and should primarily be, an instrument for furthering our practical ends. It has fallen out of favour because historically influential variants of the view, such as logical positivism, suffered from serious defects. In this book, however, Darrell P. Rowbottom develops a new form of instrumentalism, which is more sophisticated and resilient than its predecessors. This position—‘cognitive instrumentalism’—involves three core theses. First, science makes theoretical progress primarily when it furnishes us with more predictive power or understanding concerning observable things. Second, scientific discourse concerning unobservable things should only be taken literally in so far as it involves observable properties or analogies with observable things. Third, scientific claims about unobservable things are probably neither approximately true nor liable to change in such a way as to increase in truthlikeness. There are examples from science throughout the book, and Rowbottom demonstrates at length how cognitive instrumentalism fits with the development of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century chemistry and physics, and especially atomic theory. Drawing upon this history, Rowbottom also argues that there is a kind of understanding, empirical understanding, which we can achieve without having true, or even approximately true, representations of unobservable things. In closing the book, he sets forth his view on how the distinction between the observable and unobservable may be drawn, and compares cognitive instrumentalism with key contemporary alternatives such as structural realism, constructive empiricism, and semirealism.Overall, this book offers a strong defence of instrumentalism that will be of interest to scholars and students working on the debate about realism in philosophy of science.
This book examines the path that name, image, and likeness (NIL) has taken in the first years of the policy, how the expansion has led to differing approaches across state and universities, and how administrators in selected states are dealing with the rulemaking power they have. After an introduction contextualising how NIL policies have impacted the administrative approach at institutions, the remaining chapters focus on how NIL has altered the role of compliance offices and administrators tasked with monitoring academic and financial activity in athletic departments. Chapters leverage theories of policy diffusion and implementation to offer context on the topics from administrative and policy perspectives, while also examining how entrepreneurs are both using the policies to advance the status of the athletic arms of their institutions while dealing with these compliance struggles. The authors conclude with a discussion of an unsettled policy landscape and whether stricter guidelines are on the horizon.Name, Image, and Likeness Policies will appeal to both scholars studying sport and law, public policy, public administration, state politics, and governance, as well as readers seeking to better understand what impacts NIL is having on the college system, and students connected to major sports such as college football and basketball.

America's been bloodied but not beaten. An estimated twenty million people have died, but an exact count may never be known. The entire country is buried beneath poison ash and many still aren't accounted for. The survivors are hurting, but they must find ways to keep going. Good old American ingenuity goes into high gear. The farmers find new ways to grow crops on poisoned land. Truckers find new ways to get vital cargo to where it needs to be. In every city the residents find new ways to grow what they need and to help one another pull through. Meanwhile it seems everyone in America is moving. The evacuees are moving as far as they can from the smoking hole in the ground which was once Yellowstone National Park. The federal government is spending money it doesn't have... nothing new for them... only this time it's using the money to build new cities in isolated places in an effort to help with the largest resettlement project in the history of man.

This book is NOT recommended for casual reading for pleasure, but is written for those readers who possess a strong desire to know the truth from the source of truth, even the Holy Bible. There are many groups in the traditional Christian world that claim to teach truth, but only one can rightfully make this claim. All other groups must be considered false for having only a part of the truth. The Holy Spirit teaches the whole truth which comes from the one and only Source of truth, even our Heavenly Father, Who speaks to His Holy Prophet to all the world. In the traditional Christian world of our day we find many different versions of doctrine. The heavens cannot be responsible for this utter confusion. For example, there are many different forms of baptism, an ordinance of salvation. This book is divided into four parts: Part 1: The Cracks in the Foundation of Tradition, reviews the absence of correspondence between many doctrines of today's Christian world at large and the source of gospel truth, even the Holy Bible. The standard laid down by the Apostle Paul is "One Lord, one faith, one baptism", yet there are over 2,000 different faiths, ordinances of baptism that don't correspond to biblical example and some who say baptism isn't even required. There are countless claims to priesthood authority, none of which can trace the origin of this authority to Jesus Christ as is required in Acts 1:21-22. Puny man cannot give himself authority to act in the name of God. It stands to reason that God need do this for Himself by personal appearance and/or appearances of His servants. Part Two: Gospel Truth Helps Us to Keep the Commandments, shows how some of the popular doctrines in traditional Christianity are not supportive of the admonition to show love for the Savior by keeping His commandments (John 14:15). For example: the world no longer keeps the Sabbath Day holy. So too, faithful Christians are taught to revere a deity that is not described in biblical text. Part Three: Two Kingdoms: How Do We Tell Them Apart?, discusses the differences between the true kingdom of God on the Earth and the the other kingdom, a concoction of religious creeds which have been initiated by mankind alone, in good faith, yet without claim to or support from the God of heaven. Part Four: Rebuilding the House: discussed the efforts made by the God of the universe to restore His true gospel doctrines and authority to His children. Many discoveries suggest that events of the Book of Mormon would have been unknown to Joseph Smith, Jr. if the book were fiction. The Church established by this man was under the direction of the Lord Jesus Christ whose name is a part of the name of the Church and He claims it as His own. The only Church on Earth so claimed. When the Church was in its infancy, the prophet Joseph Smith gathered the entire priesthood leadership of the Church into a one-room cabin 14 feet square. In this meeting he made the claim that this Church would spread from this humble beginning to spread throughout the whole earth. This would have been the claim of an charlatan were it not supported by the God of heaven Who brought about literal fulfillment. After nearly 20 years of study in response to admonitions of leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a marvelous blessing received by the author in 1972: "Prepare your mind through a prayerful and conscientious study of the scriptures and as you do so, your tongue will be loosed and you will be able to speak with power, even as a Savior on Mount Zion, unto the convincing of many souls". This book is proof of the efforts on the author's part to prepare his mind, and the literal fulfillment of a promise made by the Lord of heaven to one of His faithful children. The objective of this book is to prove that a drift ibn basic doctrines of salvation, even the truth, taught by Jesus Christ to the men He called and prepared to carry on His work has occurred.
Even when faced with record-breaking high and low temperatures, storms of severity never before witnessed by man and expanding hurricane and tornado seasons, scientists cannot agree on what's making our climate and weather patterns go haywire. In recent years the problem has been deemed more political than scientific. In the halls of Congress, finger pointing is the order of the day. One camp blames the few scientists who still deny climate change as being bought and paid for. Nothing more, really, than paid lobbyists trying to protect the fossil fuel industries in the face of a decreasingly-deniable problem. The other camp says the vast majority of scientists who've concluded that climate change is a real thing are merely trying to further a liberal agenda. To finally strengthen pollution standards and reduce carbon emissions to levels which have had them salivating for years. Everybody wants cleaner air. But conservatives claim that obtaining that clean air will shackle big oil and the coal industry and raise costs for everyone. "Clean air is nice," they say. "But we don't want the nation to have to pay five dollars a gallon for gas to get it." And therein lies the crux of the problem. Each side is too busy blaming the other side to actually deal with the problem. It's far more important that their side doesn't get blamed for whatever ugliness is coming. But what if both sides are missing the point? What if both sides are spending so much effort blaming the other side that they've lost sight of the fact that people are dying unnecessarily? And that the problem could very possibly get much worse unless they stop sitting on their hands and do their jobs? Most people assume it's the damage from more powerful hurricanes, tornados and floods that's the biggest hazard of climate change. But what if the problem is none of those? What if the biggest hazard from climate change is something different? Something the scientists haven't even considered yet? Something that has the potential of eradicating humanity itself? "Pandemic" delves into one such possibility...

A WHOLESOME BOOK TO INSTILL VICTORIAN VIRTUES & TEACH ABOUT A DARK PERIOD IN HISTORYSet in the streets of London in 1834, Lord Rivers' riveting tale "Charlie the Chimney Sweep" follows a hardworking young chimney sweep and his friends as they work through the day to earn some pocket money. What better way to send children to bed than by regaling them with tales of sweeping out the soot from chimneys, earning some shillings, and buying jellied eels for dinner in the park with friends All the while some less than reputable fellows in Parliament conspire to keep Charlie from working, likely in order to keep all the money and jellied eels for themselves This story extols the virtues of hardworking children and lightheartedly demonstrates that not everyone was keen on some of the various "reforms" of 19th century Britain. THE REAL HISTORY OF THE CHIMNEY SWEEPS - also included is a history of the Chimney Sweepers Acts and child labour reforms. The Chimney Sweepers Act of 1834, herein referenced, was one of the first steps taken towards combating child labour in the United Kingdom in the 19th century.

Introduction to LibreOffice Productivity Software

The software suite LibreOffice provides an alternative to the widely used (but rather expensive) Microsoft Office suite. The fact that LibreOffice can be downloaded free should make it extremely attractive to a student just beginning to learn how to use a computer. This book is intended for students with little or no experience with computers. It introduces the concept of a file, then describes how to utilize and navigate a file storage system. It gives brief descriptions and examples of how to use LibreOffice Writer, LibreOffice Calc and LibreOffice Impress. It was written primarily in response to the increasing prices of the texts being used in laboratories supporting computer literacy courses. (The prices had increased to the point where students actively resisted purchasing them.) Another factor was the deteriorating support provided by the companies publishing those texts. The aim of this book is to give a beginning student enough tools to make the programs (and his/her computer) useful. The book is intended as an introductory text, not a reference manual. After a student has begun using the programs, there are many resources (easily available) to help expand his/her capabilities as needed.
Funny but scripturally accurate poems on every Bible story in II Samuel. This is not your typical children's Bible story book. It is written for youth and adults. Pastors and youth pastors will find this a great resource to illustrate any story they are teaching or preaching from in II Samuel.
