Boken skildrar Ferdinand Bobergs rika bidrag till arkitektur, design av möbler och konstföremål, etsning och akvarell. Den fördjupar bilden av den ovanliga personen, uppvuxen i Norbergs gruvsamhälle, gift med konstnären Anna Boberg. Ferdinand Boberg stod i spetsen för det moderna genombrottet inom arkitekturen vid förra sekelskiftet. Han bröt med kopierandet av historiska stilar. Husen skulle vara rationellt uppbyggda med den inre funktionen som utgångspunkt. Behoven styrde rumshöjder, ljuset bestämmer fönstrens former och placeringar. Ett trapphus fick gärna synas i fasaden. Det var en arkitektur för den moderna industrialismen med stora hallar för generatorer och ångmaskiner med höga skorstenar. Men också konsthallar, villor och varuhus. Till funktionen räknade Boberg också dekorativa inslag både invändigt och utvändigt. Ibland lekfulla, som en dekor av glödlampor eller mynt, brevduvor och posthorn. Eller så kunde han hämta motiv från naturen, som tallbarr, eklöv, rosor, möss, salamandrar. Utställningsbyggnaderna som skulle locka publiken för en sommar kunde få polkagrisrandiga minaretlikande torn. Hans fönsterlösa konsthallar hörde till sin tids modernaste byggnader. Och Boberg hjälpte till med att fylla husen med moderna möbler och det senaste inom konsthantverk i keramik, glas och silver. Han rörde sig mitt i jugend- och art nouveau epoken, även om Boberg inte riktigt ville räkna sig dit. När NK stod klart lämnade han arkitektyrket för att skildra svensk och internationell arkitektur i bild, nyfiken på allt, både nytt och gammalt. Till Bobergs kända byggnader hör brandstationen i Gävle, gas- och elektricitetsverken vid Värtan i Stockholm, Rosenbad, de forna Centralposthusen i Stockholm och Malmö, LO-borgen, prins Eugens Waldemarsudde, Thielska Galleriet, 1897 och 1909 års utställningar i Stockholm. Baltiska utställningen i Malmö 1914 symboliserade slutet på jugendepoken i och med utbrottet av första världskriget.
