Up until the last century there was a tendency, among directors in the theatre and academic critics alike, to stress the philosophical and satirical content of Molière's comedy and to overlook the fact that he was a professional man of the theatre. More recently, certain influential critics have tended to go to the other extreme and to emphasise the theatrical and aesthetic qualities of his plays at the expense of what they may have to offer as plays of ideas. This study seeks to reconcile the two approaches: while exploring the evolution of Molière's comedy as a vehicle for his own talents as an actor and for the resources of his company, the author also seeks to define the composition of the original audiences, both in the public theatre and at Court, and to assess the taste and attitudes of the spectators for whom the plays were written.

The Ring of Fairies gather in the dell to celebrate Surrain's good news. Secrets are told and a mystery unfolds. Surrain begins to hallucinate and she slips away from the group unnoticed. The fairies senses are heightened as evil forces approach...and attack. Surrain is found near to death and is taken to her cottage. The little fairy makes a surprising recovery...but all is not as it seems. As ghoulish fiends manifest, the atmosphere grows heavy. Darkness looms over the fairy kingdom. Surrain endures a harrowing journey. Feeling weak and vulnerable, Surrain is terrorised as the Grim Reaper seizes his moment.
A mysterious soul appears in the depths of Magentis Castle, as the unearthly sounds fade-away. The graveyard keeper watches over the mortal cemetery. At seeing outsiders, the so-called sexton manifests into a dark eerie ghoul; then the screeching phantom rushes towards the strangers. A tremor shakes the kingdom. The cave with the vortex seal's up, trapping a strange beast inside. Taz is alone inside Magentis Castle. The spirit realm awakes and the Draemid fairy embraces the ghostly atmosphere. Taz dances her way to the Great Hall, only to be terrorized. Taz runs screaming through Magentis Castle, into the clutches of a demonic force. Some time later, fear consumes Taz when werewolves abduct her. A celebration is in jeopardy. Then pounding hooves echo throughout the woods and the Grim Reaper appears, bringing more than a dire warning...
The raging Grim Reaper returns to the Kingdom of Deyn. Meanwhile, ghosts and ghouls continue to haunt Surrain and Taz. In the dead of night Surrain is confronted by a presence. The entity makes his intentions clear; he discloses his feelings then propositions Surrain. The little fairy feels drawn to him; Surrain understands why she has been pursued and considers entering into this unique and chilling pact. Once again Surrain is forewarned about the forthcoming slaughter and destruction of her kingdom. Surrain is eager to find the book of Simple Spells and Incantations. She rummages in Meidi's chambers, but the book is nowhere to be found. Surrain decides to search the library. In this dull and eerie room, the little fairy gets more than she bargains for. A door leading to a secret hideaway is accidentally revealed and Surrain becomes caught in a tangled web of death.
South Africa in Transition utilises new theoretical perspectives to describe and explain central dimensions of the democratic transition in South Africa during the late 1980s and early 1990s, covering changes in the politics of gender and education, the political discourses of the ANC, NP and the white right, constructions of identity in South Africa's black townships and rural areas, the role of political violence in the transition, and accounts of the democratization process itself.

Applied welfare economics proceeds from the assumption that preferences are fixed and independent of social context. Social psychologists and anthropologists, in contrast, interpret preferences as being strongly shaped by culture and the prevailing social norms. This viewpoint is supported by a wealth of evidence from ethnographies, social surveys, and experimental studies.Integrating theory and evidence from a range of social sciences, the authors argue that the satisfaction derived from material goods depends upon their symbolic meaning, as people use goods to reinforce a positive social identity. They further contend that this calls for the incorporation of status preferences in economic models. The book finds that concerns over social status may lead decision makers to significantly overvalue consumption and undervalue the natural environment. In addition, income and consumption taxes that are normally regarded as 'distortionary' may be necessary to address the social costs of status signalling. Based on the available evidence, the authors argue that failing to account for status preferences can lead to flawed policy prescriptions in debates over optimal taxation, the economics of climate change and Environmental Kuznets Curves. To address this bias, the book offers a tractable, operational, and theoretically grounded approach to the economics of social status. Students and scholars of ecological, environmental and resource economics will find Status, Growth and the Environment to be a highly original and fascinating read. It will also be of great relevance to anyone with an interest in applied welfare economics.
