He often talks to his mother, but he hasn't seen his father Dave for six months. Dave's been trying to face his family, but there are just too many demons. He can't forget how he and his brother Stephen escaped the troubles of Northern Ireland ten years earlier. He is haunted by what happened when they met June and her sister Susan, and the irreversible changes the town of Stonebridge brought to their lives . A shattering and redemptive story of fathers and sons, and the power of memory. Jazz June: A Self-Portrait in Essays traces a life, not by recounting its major events but by going deep into its representative moments: the moments of wonder, hope, fear, uncertainty, humor, love, and epiphany that make up human experience. Along the way, as a son of a widowed mother, as a young man in the big city, as a husband and father, as an aging empty nester, and as an artist, the author discovers, with each new role, more of who he is. A lover of the arts, he offers creative reflections on literature, music, and film; a Black American whose life is informed but not defined by race, he embraces Black culture while remaining defiantly himself.

Nam June Paik (1932-2006) broke new ground in late-twentieth-century art, working on a global stage to transform video into an art medium. This book reflects on Paik s working method as well as the ideas and materials that inspired his art practice. It highlights the centrality of process and exploration across his career through seminal pieces from the early 1960s to the late-style painted TVs, large-scale sculptures, and drawings and provides an opportunity to follow Paik s lifelong engagement with new media and the development of his own visual language. Highlights include Paik s painted sections of the Berlin Wall (2005); Beuys Projection (1990), Paik s powerful video interpretation of his performance with Joseph Beuys in Tokyo; and his celebrated One Candle, Candle Projection (1988-2000), a live video installation of candlelight. The book features an essay by John G. Hanhardt, one of the foremost scholars of Paik s work. Extensive illustrations include numerous full-page plates and details, as well as rarely seen archival photographs of Paik by Peter Moore (1932-1993), dating from 1964 through 1977.
