As the population of elderly people has increased, so too has the incidence of hip fracture. While injuries to the hips are common, they can be quite complicated and require both surgical and non-surgical approaches to treatment and management. J. Zuckerman, MD, Chairman, Dep. of Orthopaedic Surgery and K. Koval, MD, Chief, Fracture service, both of the prestigious Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York, in this new volume address the issues, complications, and treatments that face both hip specialists and general orthopedic surgeon. Over 500 line drawings and photographs analyze and explain the various types of hip fractures including fractures of the femoral neck, intertrochanteric fractures and subtrochanteric fractures. In addition, this book covers epidemiology and mechanisms of injury, diagnosis, treatment principles, avoidance of pitfalls, rehabilitation, outcome assessment, economics of hip fracture treatment and prevention.
Fix It: How History, Sports, and Education Can Inform Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Today
Despite a long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion, creating a more diverse bar has been challenging for the legal profession. And this begs the question "why?" Does the profession find itself in the precarious position of having self-imposed barriers in place that work against its best efforts, are outside factors beyond the profession's control inhibiting progress, or is it a combination of the two? Fix It: How History, Sports, and Education Can Inform Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Today cites historical and current references and the latest research to address these questions and much more.

The Company of Neighbours

The Company of Neighbours

The town of Hespeler in southwestern Ontario is an old industrial community that lost its core manufacturing businesses, its municipal status, and its civic pride in the time since the end of the Korean War. In the early 1990s, Banks and Mangan implemented a community-development, action-research project designed to rebuild and revitalize the town. This book illustrates the success of local citizens in the revival of their community and the discovery of a nascent network of mutual support among neighbours. The authors demonstrate how inquiry, education, and action-research can combine to form an effective model for engaged ethnographic analysis. Their application of narrative inquiry to community-based research is new, and their conclusion that externally generated, imposed structure impedes community autonomy and responsibility is well supported. The book significantly expands the established theoretical framework of action-research and offers an exciting alternative to existing models of community development. The Company of Neighbours demonstrates a valuable approach for researchers, social workers, educators, and geographers in facilitating the collective efforts of people in local communities to shape the conditions of their own lives. With a new farmer's market, a museum in the renovated train station, youth programs, and an invigorated Business Improvement Association, Hespeler is well on its way to a new identity.

This volume includes comprehensive information on the species' evolution, behavior, courtship and reproduction, habitat use, diet, population structure, systematics, and disease. Special features include color photos of all species, subspecies, and their habitats; a simple identification guide to both living and fossil species; and a summary of information on fossil Terrapene and Native uses of box turtles. End-of-chapter sections highlight future research directions, including the need for long-term monitoring and observation of box turtles within their natural habitat and conservation applications. A glossary and a bibliography of literature on box turtles accompany the text. All royalties from the sales of this volume will go to the Chelonian Research Foundation, a nonprofit foundation for the conservation of turtles.

This book answers the question virtually every manager and most CEOs are asking: Why doesn't this organization perform better? To re-energize their companies, CEOs must understand the source of their inconsistent behavior by examining their true driving values, working with managers and employees to raise and resolve issues sooner, setting goals and personal development plans, and more. Virtually every manager and CEO wonders why his or her organization doesn't perform better. What's wrong at the top? When effectiveness has gone stale despite using all the cutting-edge thrusts, the malaise's source is how the leaders are inadvertently behaving. What worked before when the company was smaller and its challenges were less complex doesn't work anymore, because the leader's foibles—once endearing and excusable idiosyncrasies—now create a lack of clarity and focus that lead to an ineffective, disempowered, lethargic organization. The problem is that the CEO is behaving inconsistently with the stated vision, decisions, and values of the organization. As CEO, you can't act consistently unless you know what your true driving values are. These are driven by old fears, successes, or aspirations, which motivate your behavior every day, in calm and crisis. You and your organization need to know what they are, and this book will help you define them. Once you know what they are, you need help in developing consistent behaviors around them. That requires vulnerability, which is a critical and often misunderstood leadership trait. When you ask for help, others are more willing to assist you in accomplishing necessary goals. This process gives rise to a shared fate and shared reward program, in which team members hold each other responsible by virtue of the peer dynamic, rather than a superior-subordinate one. This book describes how such a process can and must be done to ensure better execution, motivated employees, satisfied customers, and higher profits.

• What is Exploring Abstract Algebra with Mathematica? Exploring Abstract Algebra with Mathematica is a learning environment for introductory abstract algebra built around a suite of Mathematica packages enti tled AbstractAlgebra. These packages are a foundation for this collection of twenty-seven interactive labs on group and ring theory. The lab portion of this book reflects the contents of the Mathematica-based electronic notebooks con tained in the accompanying CD-ROM. Students can interact with both the printed and electronic versions of the material in the laboratory and look up details and reference information in the User's Guide. Exercises occur in the stream of the text of labs, providing a context in which to answer. The notebooks are designed so that the answers to the questions can either be entered into the electronic notebook or written on paper, whichever the instructor prefers. The notebooks support versions 2. 2 and 3. 0-4. 0 and are compatible with all platforms that run Mathematica. This work can be used to supplement any introductory abstract algebra text and is not dependent on any particular text. The group and ring labs have been cross referenced against some of the more popular texts. The American Revolution: An Intimate History

The American Revolution: An Intimate History

From the award-winning historian and filmmakers of The Civil War, Baseball, Jazz, The Roosevelts, and others: a richly illustrated, human-centered history of America's founding struggle--expanding on the landmark, six-part PBS series to be aired in November 2025 "From a small spark kindled in America, a flame has arisen not to be extinguished." --Thomas Paine In defeating the British Empire and giving birth to a new nation, the American Revolution turned the world upside down. Thirteen colonies on the Atlantic coast rose in rebellion, won their independence, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired independence movements and democratic reforms around the globe. The American Revolution was at once a war for independence, a civil war, and a world war, fought by neighbors on American farms and between global powers an ocean or more away. In this sumptuous volume, historian Geoffrey C. Ward ably steers us through the international forces at play, telling the story not from the top down but from the bottom up--and through the eyes of not only our "Founding Fathers" but also those of ordinary soldiers, as well as underrepresented populations such as women, African Americans, Native Americans, and American Loyalists, asking who exactly was entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Enriched by guest essays from lauded historians such as Vincent Brown, Maya Jasanoff, Jane Kamensky, and Alan Taylor, and by an astonishing array of prints, drawings, paintings, texts, and pamphlets from the time period, as well as newly commissioned art and maps--and woven together with the words of Thomas Paine-- The American Revolution reveals a nation still grappling with the questions that fueled its remarkable founding.
