As elite communities in medieval societies the Military Orders were driven by the ambition to develop built environments that fulfilled monastic needs as well as military requirements and, in addition, residential and representational purposes. Growing affluence and an international orientation provided a wide range of development potential. That this potential was in fact exploited may be exemplified by the advanced fortifications erected by Templars and Hospitallers in the Levant. Although the history of the Military Orders has been the subject of research for a long time, their material legacy has attracted less attention. In recent years, however, a vast range of topics concerning the Orders’ building activities has become the object of investigation, primarily with the help of archaeology. They comprise the choice of sites and building materials, provision and storage of food and water, aspects of the daily life, the design and layout of commanderies, churches and fortifications, their spatial arrangement, and the role these buildings played in their environmental context. This volume contains ten articles discussing the archaeology and architecture of buildings erected by the three major Military Orders in different geographical regions. They cover most countries of Western Europe and include a number of important fortifications in the Levant. These studies break new ground in the investigation of the built fabric of the Military Orders. Written by noted international scholars this publication is an important contribution to modern research on these institutions, which, in their association of monasticism and knighthood, were so typical for the Middle Ages.

Im str menden Regen stehe ich in Anchorage auf dem Flughafen und hole das Motorrad aus dem Transportgestell, eine Woche sp ter berquere ich auf einer abgelegenen Schotterpiste den Polarkreis Richtung Norden. Das kleine Goldgr berst dtchen Dawson City ist jedes Jahr Treffpunkt von rund 250 begeisterten Reisemotorradfahrern aus der ganzen Welt - drei Tage lang feiere mit ihnen das 20. Jubil um des "Dust-to-Dawson"-Treffens. In den USA empf ngt mich unglaubliche Hitze, in Utah und Arizona steigt das Thermometer auf ber 40 Grad Celsius und macht Motorradfahren fast unm glich. Nach vielen Tagen in den sch nsten Nationalparks lockt die Gro stadt. F r ein paar Tage komme ich in Los Angeles bei einem russischen Anwalt in Beverly Hills unter, der deutsche Hollywood-Star Ralf M ller spendiert mir ein Fr hst ck, bei dem ich Regisseur Paul Verhoeven treffe. Gemeinsam mit drei Australiern nehme ich die sandige Halbinsel Baja California in Mexiko unter die R der. Lagerfeuer an einsamen Buchten machen die St rze im Sand und die unglaubliche Hitze wieder wett. Gemeinsam mit Dutzenden Mexikanern feiern wir den Unabh ngigkeitstag, auf der Yucatan-Halbinsel genie e ich das Karibik-Feeling und tauche vor Cozumel mit riesigen Rochen. In Honduras lasse ich das Motorrad reparieren und bin fasziniert von Kevins Seemannsgarn: Der amerikanische Besitzer einer Tauchbasis erz hlt von Drogenschmugglern, die an der K ste ihr Unwesen treiben. In Nicaragua versuche ich mich auf dem Surfbrett, in Panama besichtige ich den ber hmten Kanal und lasse das Motorrad per Luftfracht nach Kolumbien bringen - es gibt keine befahrbare Landverbindung zwischen den beiden L ndern. Auf kolumbianische Kaffeeplantagen folgen in Ecuador Bananenplantagen und atemberaubende Motorradstrecken. Mehr als 1.000 Kilometer reiht sich Kurve an Kurve auf bestem Asphalt - ein Traum f r jeden Biker. Peru zeigt zwei Gesichter: einerseits den katastrophalen Verkehr in den St dten, andererseits die gewaltigen Anden mit tollen Offroad-Pisten und grandiosen Panoramen. Mit Alex, einem Freund aus Deutschland, fahre ich tagelang durch die Berge, zelte auf ber 4.000 Meter H he und gelange auf ungew hnlichem Weg nach Machu Picchu. Ein schwankendes Holzflo bringt mich ber den Titicacasee nach Bolivien. Wegen einer Volksz hlung herrscht dort im ganzen Land Ausgangssperre, die Stra en der Millionenstadt La Paz sind leer gefegt, die Polizei verbietet die Weiterfahrt. In der Silbermine von Potosi in Bolivien krieche ich mit einer Gruppe Touristen durch enge und ungesicherte Stollen. Wir kauen Koka-Bl tter mit den Mineros und stehen nur 20 Meter entfernt in einer Sackgasse, als eine gewaltige Explosion Gestein aus dem Berg sprengt. Dann das Kontrastprogramm zum Bergwerk: Auf dem gr ten Salzsee der Welt spiegelt sich das glei ende Sonnenlicht, absolute Leere im Umkreis von vielen Kilometern. Am Grenz bergang zu Argentinien komme ich von der Dritten in die Erste Welt, die Unterschiede zwischen beiden L ndern k nnten nicht gr er sein. Ich treffe Alex aus Deutschland wieder und folge mit ihm tagelang dem Tross der Rallye Dakar durch Chile und Argentinien, bevor ich zur letzten Etappe aufbreche. ber einsame Pisten vorbei an wundersch nen Bergseen, durch die scheinbar endlose Pampa. Bei Windst rke 10 fegt mich der Sturm im S den Argentiniens beinahe von der Stra e...
