Law and Democracy in Neil MacCormick's Legal and Political Theory
This volume offers a collection of articles by leading legal and political theorists. Originally intended as a celebration of MacCormick’s work on the occasion of the completion of the four-volume series on Law, State and Practical Reason, it has turned into a homage and salute after MacCormick’s passing. Cast in MacCormick’s reflexive spirit, the book presents a critical reconstruction of the Scottish philosopher’s work, with the aim of revealing the connections between law and democracy in his writings and furthering his insights in each specific field.Neil MacCormick made outstanding contributions to the understanding of law and democracy under conditions of pluralism. His institutional theory of law has elucidated the close connection between the normative character of law as a means of social integration and legal social practices. This has produced a synthesis of the key insights of the legal and political theories of Kelsen, Hart, Alexy and Dworkin, and has broken new ground by undermining the ‘monolithic’ and ‘nation-state’ centered character of standard legal theories.

From Prairie to Mountain - Neil Astle's Modern Vision

From Prairie to Mountain traces the career of architect Neil Astle, whose inventive modernism emerged from the landscapes and cultures of the Great Plains and Mountain West. The book presents Astle as a systems thinker who fused structural clarity, material honesty, and deep environmental sensitivity. Through houses, civic buildings, and institutional work, he developed a uniquely human-centered architectural language rooted in site and lived experience. His mature projects-ranging from monasteries to wildlife visitors centers-demonstrate a rare balance of technical rigor and poetic restraint. Ultimately, the book reveals an under-recognized master whose work exemplifies thoughtful, context-driven design. The author, Bruce Wrightsman, is a Tenured Professor with the McEwen School of Architecture at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. He is a licensed architect with over twenty-five years of experience in the United States. As an educator, Bruce has over a decade of experience serving as instructor on multiple award-winning academic Design/Build projects. Bruce's research is divided into two areas of investigation. In the first he examines the pedagogical and social efficacy of Design/Build curricula across North America. In the second he explores Alternative Building Strategies where the architectonics of building has resulted in an architectural pursuit of reducing the ecological footprint of a building through material selection, and alternative building approaches in relation to the site. Bruce has also been researching the work of architect Neil Astle, (1936-2000) and his innovative approach to design, sustainability, and craft.

The Words and Music of Neil Young

The Words and Music of Neil Young

Neil Young is an icon, plain and simple. The Words and Music of Neil Young follows the evolution of Young's musical work from the late 1960s to the present, with special focus on the enduring elements that have made his music successful. Neil Young cannot be simply labeled. He has recorded as a solo artist, as a member of a hard rock trio, and with numerous other musician configurations. He can move from the soft sounds of early 1970s acoustic folk to the distorted, fuzz guitar sound of Crazy Horse, while his compositions have responded to musical trends from punk rock to grunge, and to social issues like racism, the Vietnam War, and war in Iraq as well. Individual chapters cover Young's musical output album by album, and song by song--from his debut work with Buffalo Springfield, to his time with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, to his solo work within various genres and for various causes (some political, but all artistic). In his conclusion, author Ken Bielen sums up Neil Young's accomplishments and places his work in the context of contemporary culture. A discography and bibliography round out the work.

Leave the old paradigm behind and start safeguarding your portfolio Short Selling with the O'Neil Disciples is a guide to optimizing investment performance by employing the unique strategies put forth by William O'Neil. The authors traded these strategies with real money, then refined them to reflect changing markets and conditions to arrive at a globally-relevant short-selling strategy that helps investors realize maximum profit. Readers will learn how short selling recognizes the life-cycle paradigm arising from an economic system that thrives on 'creative destruction,' and has been mischaracterized as an evil enterprise when it is simply a single component in smart investing and money management. This informative guide describes the crucial methods that preserve gains and offset declines in other stocks that make up a portfolio with more of an intermediate- to long-term investment horizon, and how to profit outright when markets begin to decline. Short-selling is the act of identifying a change of trend in a stock from up to down, and seeking to profit from that change by riding the stock to the downside by selling the stock while not actually owning it, with the idea of buying the stock back later at a lower price. This book describes the methods that make short-selling work in today's markets, with expert advice for optimal practice. Learn the six basic rues of short-sellingFind opportunities on both the long and short sides of stocksPractice refined methods that make short-selling smarterExamine case studies that profitably embody these practices Investors able to climb out of the pessimistic, conspiratorial frame of mind that fixates on the negative will find that short selling can serve as a practical safeguard that will protect the rest of their portfolio. With clear guidance toward the techniques relevant in today's markets, Short Selling with the O'Neil Disciples is an essential read.
Heartless: The True Story of Neil Entwistle and the Cold Blooded Murder of His Wife and Child
Neil seemed like a dream come true for Rachel: a handsome, impeccably mannered, success-oriented Englishman, the fairytale husband she had dreamed of meeting. By the time Neil and Rachel Entwistle were husband and wife, living the good life in a New England town, it was too late to guess the truth: that beneath Neil's good looks and manners was a deceit and darkness... On a winter day in 2006, police came to the Entwistle home and found the decomposing bodies of twenty-seven-year-old Rachel and their nine-month old daughter Lillian Rose. Rachel had been shot in the head. Lillian in the stomach. And Neil was gone. Soon, authorities would begin a desperate search that would take them across the Atlantic to find Neil...and bring him to trial.
