The monograph presents scenarios of situations where foreign investments suffer damage. These model scenarios are based on thorough analysis of real cases, facts from the ground and recent arbitral practice (relating namely to arbitrations against Russia, Syria or Libya). This allows the author, in the next step, to ascertain what rules are applicable to the conduct of states towards foreign investments, but also to demonstrate how they apply in real-case scenarios. In particular, the work identifies and applies to these tailored scenarios relevant norms of international investment law, international humanitarian law and international human rights law. These regimes are relevant for protection of foreign investment, but they differ as to the situations they govern, parties whose conduct they regulate and obligations they stipulate. It is therefore appropriate to analyse in their interconnection how these rules govern typical situations that may arise during armed conflict and what particularly they prescribe. On the basis of application of these rules on the defined scenarios, the monograph focuses on the issue of applicability of investment treaties in occupied territories and on interactions and on the issue of conflict of norms in situations where foreign investments qualify as military objectives.

This book explores a significant historical event in sixteenth-century European history. The Italian crusade against the German Lutherans in 1546 was, for many reasons, the catalyst for the military phase of the Lutheran opposition in Germany's clash with Emperor Charles V (1546-1555). Contributing to literature which has generally interpreted the conflict between Charles V and the Roman-German Empire as an internal German affair, this book highlights the military involvement and participation of Pope Paul III in the initial phase of the so-called Schmalkaldic War, which took place from 1546-1547. Rather than the papal army acting peripherally through 'auxiliary military contingents' as it had done in previous years, the author argues that the Pope was directly involved in the war, sending a large army from Rome to suppress the heretical movement. Outlining the technical advance of the papal army while still on Italian territory, its campaign across the Alps into Germany, and its military activities in the early stages of the war, this book provides a new perspective on the diplomatic negotiations that led to the imperial-papal alliance in 1546. It sheds light on the development of the crusade and its eventual failure, illustrating the worsening relationship between the Pope and the Emperor, and its influence on subsequent political development.

The monograph is devoted to a crucial point of Christian theology: its development from the short formulae of the ‘gospel’ (euangelion) – as the first reflected expressions of Christian faith – to the theology of literary Gospels as texts that evoked the idea of Christian canon as a counterpart of the “Law and Prophets”. In the formulae of the oral gospel the apocalyptic expectations are adapted into a “doubled” or “split” eschatology: The Messiah has appeared, but the messianic reign is still the object of expectation. The experience with Jesus’ post Easter impact has been named as “resurrection” of which God was the subject. Since the apocalyptic “resurrection” applied for many or all people, the resurrection of Jesus became a guarantee of hope. The last chapters analyze the role of the oral gospel in shaping the earliest literary Gospel (Mark). This book analyses Gospels as texts that (re-)introduced Jesus traditions into the Christian liturgy and literature. Concluding paragraphs are devoted to the titles of the individual Gospels and to the origins of the idea of Christian canon.

Applied mathematical modeling is concerned with solving unsteady problems. Splitting schemes are attributed to the transition from a complex problem to a chain of simpler problems. This book shows how to construct additive difference schemes (splitting schemes) to solve approximately unsteady multi-dimensional problems for PDEs. Two classes of schemes are highlighted: methods of splitting with respect to spatial variables (alternating direction methods) and schemes of splitting into physical processes. Also regionally additive schemes (domain decomposition methods) and unconditionally stable additive schemes of multi-component splitting are considered for evolutionary equations of first and second order as well as for systems of equations. While concentrated on the famous Passio Perpetuae et Felicitatis, this book focuses on an area that has so far been somewhat marginalized or even overlooked by modern interpreters: the recontextualizing of the Passio Perpetuae in the subsequent reception of this text in the literature of the early Church. Since its composition in the early decades of the 3rd century, the Passio Perpetuae was enjoying an extraordinary authority and popularity. However, it contained a number of revolutionary and innovative features that were in conflict with existing social and theological conventions. This book analyses all relevant texts from the 3rd to 5th centuries in which Perpetua and her comrades are mentioned, and demonstrates the ways in which these texts strive to normalize the innovative aspects of the Passio Perpetuae. These efforts, visible as they are already on careful examination of the passages of the editor of the passio, continue from Tertullian to Augustine and his followers. The normalization of the narrative reaches its peak in the so-called Acta Perpetuae which represent a radical rewriting of the original and an attempt to replace it by a purified text, more compliant with the changed socio-theological hierarchies.

The book brings together the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard with that of another prominent proto-existentialist thinker, Fyodor Dostoevsky. Asking the question: "What constitutes an authentic Christian life?", the book explores the answer given by both authors, which is that one should rid oneself of selfish inclinations and strive for a life of faith that revolves around the virtues of humility and non-preferential love. However, as we learn from Dostoevsky and Kierkegaard, becoming an authentic individual is no easy task, and the book goes on to examine the obstacles that lie in the path of individual existential self-development. The book then examines the ways in which the various characters and pseudonymous authors who populate Dostoevsky's and Kierkegaard's books struggle in their attempts to become authentic ethical and religious individuals. The examination of this struggle, termed existential entrapment and defined as the inability to progress on the path of one's existential self-development, forms the core of the book and helps to map out the ethical-religious landscape of Dostoevsky’s and Kierkegaard’s thought.
