Have you ever noticed how cruel and self-sabotaging your critical inner voice can be? Have you been looking outside of yourself for friends and loved ones to reassure you of your worthiness and lovability? The latest developments in neuroscience unveil the amazing extent to which humans are wired for connection, belonging and resonance with other humans. This wiring for connection is so strong, our nervous systems have the capacity to become our own compassionate self-witnesses, even when we have not had access as children to stable loving presence and warmth. The field of neurobiology and the science of mindfulness reveal that the human brain is capable of being engaged in the experience of upset (fear, anxiety, depression) while simultaneously observing and holding ourselves with kindness, as a loving parent or partner would. This ability to be both experiencing and holding the experience is the key to maintaining inner calm in the face of life’s challenges. If we learn to honour that each and every inner voice, no matter how distressing, has the desire to help us, we open to the possibility that each part of us has value. This help creates a gentle, accepting and warm resonance with ourselves that can remain stable and present, even when parts of us feel upset. In simple language and easy-to-follow exercises, Your Resonant Self synthesises the latest discoveries in brain science, trauma treatment and the power of empathy into an effective healing method that literally rewires our brain and restores our capacity for self-love and well-being. Each chapter weaves the core concepts of neurobiology with guided meditations and beautiful illustrations, painting an inspiring picture of the human brain’s inherent yearning towards healing and wholeness.

When we experience trauma or need to find a way to protect ourselves from interpersonal hurt, we make unconscious contracts with ourselves, such as: “I will never let myself get treated that way again” or “I will never forgive myself for that". But these contracts often result in harmful behaviours like self-criticism, lack of trust and procrastination. Until we recognise and free ourselves from these damaging contracts, we can never truly heal. Your Resonant Self Workbook: From Self-sabotage to Self-care takes us through the world of relational neuroscience and, using the lens of unconscious contracts, explores how our brains, nervous systems and bodies react to the brains, nervous systems and bodies of others. Case studies, resonant-language practice, questionnaires, mediations and journaling provide readers with healing strategies for uncovering and rewriting these contracts. Following Your Resonant Self, this workbook provides the tools to turn inwards with kindness, warmth and curiosity, and create opportunities for self-healing.

This book presents a collection of analog electronic circuits based on the op-amp, supported by a wealth of practical detail which will enable the reader to speedily select, build and test a desired circuit. The book is primarily intended to be a practical reference volume rather than a teaching text. Readers will discover an extensive and invaluable source of functional and established analog circuits, from integrators and differentiators to logarithmic amplifiers, from filters to instrumentation amplifiers. The circuits are grouped according to function, and the approach is to build up slowly from the basic textbook examples towards a series of practical, workable circuits. Students who need to build and test particular types of analog circuitry as part of an assignment or project based activities will find this book invaluable. Professional engineers will also find the book useful for design and development work. The coverage is extensive and up-to-date, and provides a wealth of technical advice.

"You've heard (and probably asked) this question a million times: 'Where did you go for dinner'" A love letter to 150 Canadian restaurants, and the stories and people behind them--from pre-Confederation to present day, from Victoria to St. John's--here's where we ate. What is Canadian cuisine? While cookbook authors and historians have spent decades trying to answer this question, Canadian food isn't summed up by one iconic dish, but rather a huge range of meals, flavours, and cultural influences. It's about the people who make our food, who cook it and serve it to us at lunch counters, in ornate dining rooms and through take-out windows. In her debut book, restaurant critic and journalist Gabby Peyton has penned a celebration of 150 restaurants that have left a mark on the way Canada eats--whether they're serving California rolls, foie gras poutine, hand-cut beef tartare or b nh m --and brings us from one decade to the next, showing how our dining trends evolved from beef consomm at Auberge Saint-Gabriel in 1754 to nori-covered hot dogs at Japadog. Organized chronologically, from pre-Confederation to the present day, you'll findCharming, entertaining essays, and transportive photos and menus from archival collections that give cultural, economic, and political contextMany restaurants still open for business, so you can plan your visits and bring history alive on the plate15 recipes inspired or contributed by some of the featured restaurants, for those wishing to truly feel like they're dining inA joyous representation of the incredible diversity of restaurants, people, and stories that make up our Canadian dining history, Where We Ate is as much of a timeless classic as the restaurants it features.

Equity

Equity

Hobart Peyton Young

Princeton University Press

Governments and institutions, perhaps even more than markets, determine who gets what in our society. They make the crucial choices about who pays the taxes, who gets into college, who gets medical care, who gets drafted, where the hazardous waste dump is sited, and how much we pay for public services. Debate about these issues inevitably centers on the question of whether the solution is "fair." In this book, H. Peyton Young offers a systematic explanation of what we mean by fairness in distributing public resources and burdens, and applies the theory to actual cases.
Individual Strategy and Social Structure

Individual Strategy and Social Structure

Hobart Peyton Young

Princeton University Press
2001
pokkari
Neoclassical economics as-sumes that people are highly rational and can reason their way through even the most complex economic problems. In Individual Strategy and Social Structure, Peyton Young argues for a more realistic view in which people have a limited understanding of their environment, are sometimes short-sighted, and occasionally act in perverse ways. He shows how the cumulative experiences of many such individuals coalesce over time into customs, norms, and institutions that govern economic and social life. He develops a theory that predicts how such institutions evolve and characterizes their welfare properties. The ideas are illustrated through a variety of examples, including patterns of residential segregation, rules of the road, claims on property, forms of economic contracts, and norms of equity. The book relies on new results in evolutionary game theory and stochastic dynamical systems theory, many of them originated by the author. It can serve as an introductory text, or be read on its own as a contribution to the study of economic and social institutions.

Few if any alcoholic drinks have the dramatic and multi-faceted history of gin. In this fascinating new instalment of the British Library's pocket philosophies, gin is explored through its origins in Holland, where it was popularised by William of Orange; its roots in medicine; its capacity to provide an albeit destructive escapism during the Gin Craze; its influence on language - responsible for the coining of 'dutch courage'; and its current status as a popular social beverage and a pastime for those keen to experiment with flavouring their own gins. The Philosophy of Gin covers the historic transformation of the beverage, ideal flavour pairings for the gin connoisseur, and how a spirit once given a wide berth by the middle and upper classes now attracts such a large proportion of the British public to choose gin as their tipple of choice.
The Philosophy of Cocktails

Jane Peyton

British Library Publishing

An early description of a cocktail as ‘a mix of alcoholic drinks with flavouring ingredients’ does nothing to convey the alchemy and speak-easy glamour of these elaborate drinks. The cocktail’s humble beginnings as a medicinal tonic through the inclusion of botanicals into distilled spirits such as gin and whiskey, accelerates with the ingenuity of bartenders who created the ‘classics’ – the Martini, Manhattan and Old Fashioned – in the nineteenth-century, and in the decadence of the Jazz Age and Roaring Twenties. This book explores the journey that cocktails have made, via China and the Middle East, the Americas and the UK, to arrive at the bespoke menus of today’s stylish clubs and bars, complete with descriptions of the myriad ingredients, glassware and paraphernalia that the mixologist has at their disposal.

Cider is sunshine in a glass! Follow Jane Peyton on a glorious voyage of discovery, from the journey the wild Malus Sieversii apple - ancestor of today's domesticated apple - has made from the foothills of Central Asia's Tien Shan mountains, to the Norman invasion, which introduced new apple varieties and pressing technologies to Britain, to the colonists of America, who took apples with them, planted the seeds and drank cider long before beer brewing was properly established. Today their legacy is sustained in the traditional orchards and processes of craft cider-makers; the folk traditions of the British Wassail and Txotx celebrations of the Basque Country; and the ethos of the Slow Food Movement. In addition to explaining cider's links to champagne and why we are enjoying a renaissance of both cider- and perry-making, Jane provides tasting tips and food pairings to help any aspiring cider drinker. Welcome to Ciderland.
Unbuilt Environments

Unbuilt Environments

Jonathan Peyton

University of British Columbia Press
2017
sidottu
In the latter half of the twentieth century, legions of industrial pioneers came to northwestern British Columbia with grand plans for mines, dams, and energy-development schemes. Yet many of their projects failed to materialize or were abandoned midstream. Unbuilt Environments reveals that these lapsed resource projects had lasting effects on the natural and human environment. Drawing on a range of case studies to analyze the social and environmental impacts of unfinished projects, Jonathan Peyton considers development failure a productive concept for northwestern Canada. He looks at a closed asbestos mine, an abandoned rail grade, an imagined series of hydroelectric installations, a failed LNG export facility, and a transmission line – and finds that these unrealized developments continue to shape contemporary resource conflicts.
