The textbook describes with examples the range of poetic techniques employed by the biblical poets--encompassing all poetic texts in the Hebrew Bible, including the psalms, wisdom and prophetic literature, and poetic lines embedded within Hebrew prose. The book is organized into five main sections, beginning with a robust introduction on the idea of Hebrew poetry and where it is dispersed throughout the Hebrew Bible. Three primary chapters follow, addressing Masoretic, lexical, and morphological features, structural poetics, and specific Hebrew poetics. The book concludes with a summary chapter and two helpful appendices.A Primer of Biblical Hebrew Poetry is intended for upper-level undergraduate students and seminary students who have already begun learning the Hebrew language. Emanuel's clear explanations and examples are intended to support classroom teaching on Hebrew poetry, whether in a Hebrew readings class or in the context of book studies that include Hebrew poetry.

From the Preface. The Theory of Quaternions is due to Sir William Rowan Hamilton, Royal Astronomer of Ireland, who presented his first paper on the subject to the Royal Irish Academy in 1843. His Lectures on Quaternions were published in 1853, and his Elements, in 1866, shortly after his death. "The Elements of Quaternions" by Tait is the accepted text-book for advanced students. The following development of the theory is prepared for average students with a thorough knowledge of the elements of algebra and geometry and is believed to be a simple and elementary treatment founded directly upon the fundamental ideas of the subject. This theory is applied in the more advanced examples to develop the principal formulas of trigonometry and solid analytical geometry, and the general properties and classification of surfaces of second order. ...

A Primer of the Psychoanalytic Theory of Herbert Silberer
Herbert Silberer was an early member of Freud’s Vienna Group whose work was unique and prodigious; yet, owing to his expulsion from the psychoanalytic community, his contributions have been dismissed for close to a century. Based on original documents and primary sources, A Primer of the Psychoanalytic Theory of Herbert Silberer: What Silberer Said recovers the psychoanalytic theory of Herbert Silberer, revealing its connections to philosophy, theology and transcendence, and examining how his writings influenced C. G. Jung. The book begins with an overview of what is known of Silberer’s life, before commencing with an exploration of his writings. Charles Corliss covers topics including Silberer’s groundbreaking construct of the hypnagogic phenomenon, the process and meaning of symbolism and symbol formation, alchemy and its connection to his major work Problems of Mysticism and Symbolism, the use of symbols in Freemasonry and his influential understanding of dreams and their meaning. The book also explores Silberer’s complex relationship with the field of psychoanalysis, including his opposition to many psychoanalytic assumptions.Introducing and assessing the main contributions of Silberer’s work, this book will be of interest to analytical psychologists and Jungian psychotherapists in practice and training, as well as to academics and students of Jungian studies and the history of psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic studies, theology, philosophy and the history of psychology.
A Primer of Ecology with R

A Primer of Ecology with R

M. Henry Stevens

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
2009
nidottu
Ecology is more quantitative and theory-driven than ever before, and A Primer of Ecology with R combines an introduction to the major theoretical concepts in general ecology with a cutting edge open source tool, the R programming language. Starting with geometric growth and proceeding through stability of multispecies interactions and species-abundance distributions, this book demystifies and explains fundamental ideas in population and community ecology. Graduate students in ecology, along with upper division undergraduates and faculty, will find this to be a useful overview of important topics. In addition to the most basic topics, this book includes construction and analysis of demographic matrix models, metapopulation and source-sink models, host-parasitoid and disease models, multiple basins of attraction, the storage effect, neutral theory, and diversity partitioning. Several sections include examples of confronting models with data. Chapter summaries and problem sets at the end of each chapter provide opportunities to evaluate and enrich one's understanding of the ecological ideas that each chapter introduces. R is rapidly becoming the lingua franca of quantitative sciences, and this text provides a tractable introduction to using the R programming environment in ecology. An appendix provides a general introduction, and examples of code throughout each chapter give readers the option to hone their growing R skills. "The distinctive strength of this book is that truths are mostly not revealed but discovered, in the way that R-savvy ecologists—empirical and theoretical—work and think now. For readers still chained to spreadsheets, working through this book could be a revolution in their approach to doing science." (Stephen P. Ellner, Cornell University) "One of the greatest strengths…is the integration of ecological theory with examples ... pulled straight from the literature." (James R. Vonesh, Virginia Commonwealth University)
A Primer on Spectral Theory

A Primer on Spectral Theory

Bernard Aupetit

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
1990
nidottu
This book grew out of lectures on spectral theory which the author gave at the Scuola. Normale Superiore di Pisa in 1985 and at the Universite Laval in 1987. Its aim is to provide a rather quick introduction to the new techniques of subhar- monic functions and analytic multifunctions in spectral theory. Of course there are many paths which enter the large forest of spectral theory: we chose to follow those of subharmonicity and several complex variables mainly because they have been discovered only recently and are not yet much frequented. In our book Pro- pri6t6$ $pectrale$ de$ algebre$ de Banach, Berlin, 1979, we made a first incursion, a rather technical one, into these newly discovered areas. Since that time the bushes and the thorns have been cut, so the walk is more agreeable and we can go even further. In order to understand the evolution of spectral theory from its very beginnings, it is advisable to have a look at the following books: Jean Dieudonne, Hutory of Functional AnaIY$u, Amsterdam, 1981; Antonie Frans Monna., Functional AnaIY$i$ in Hutorical Per$pective, Utrecht, 1973; and Frederic Riesz & Bela SzOkefalvi-Nagy, Le on$ d'anaIY$e fonctionnelle, Budapest, 1952. However the picture has changed since these three excellent books were written. Readers may convince themselves of this by comparing the classical textbooks of Frans Rellich, Perturbation Theory, New York, 1969, and Tosio Kato, Perturbation Theory for Linear Operator$, Berlin, 1966, with the present work.
