The Rumen Microbial Ecosystem
Chapman and Hall
1997
sidottu
The Preface to the first edition of this book explained the reasons for the publication of a comprehensive text on the rumen and rumen microbes in 1988. The microbes of the ruminant's forestomach and those in related organs in other animals and birds provide the means by which herbivorous animals can digest and obtain nutriment from vegetation. In turn, humans have relied, and still do rely, on herbivores for much of their food, clothing and motive power. Herbivores also form the food of carnivorous animals and birds in the wild. The importance of the rumen microorganisms is thus apparent. But, while a knowledge of rumen organisms is not strictly neces sary for the normal, practical feeding of farm animals, in recent years there has been much more emphasis on increasing the productivity of domesti cated animals and in rearing farm animals on unusual feedstuffs. Here, a knowledge of the reactions of the rumen flora, and the limits to these reactions, can be invaluable. In addition, anaerobic rumen-type microor ganisms are found in the intestines of omnivores, including humans, and can be implicated in diseases of humans and animals. They are also found in soils and natural waters, where they playa part in causing pollution and also in reducing it, while the same organisms confined in artificial systems are essential for the purification of sewage and other polluting and toxic wastes.
Tired of being down on his luck, Shah decides to jump off the porch with the help of his childhood friend Hot Boi. Shah quickly rose to the top of the game; he was determined by any means necessary to take the streets by force. He soon found himself in over his head when he discovered his loyalty has become his greatest weakness.
The wives of rulers in early modern Europe did far more than provide heirs for their principalities and adornment for their courts. In this study, Judith Aikin examines the exceptionally well-documented actions of one such woman, Aemilia Juliana of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt (1637-1706), in order to expand our understanding of the role of ruler’s consort in the small principalities characteristic of Germany during this period. Aikin explores a wide range of writings by her subject, including informal letters to another woman, hundreds of devotional song texts, manuscript books both devotional and practical, and published pamphlets and books. Also important for this study are the plays, paintings, and musical works that adorned the court under Aemilia Juliana’s patronage; the books, poems, and sermons published in her honor; and the massive memorial volume printed and distributed soon after her death. This material, when coupled with the more scanty record in official documents, reveals the nature and scope of Aemilia Juliana’s role as full partner in the ruling couple. Among the most important findings based on this evidence are those related to Aemilia Juliana’s advocacy for women of all social classes through her authorship and publications, her support for the education of girls, her efforts to ameliorate the fear and suffering of pregnant and birthing women, and her contributions to female support networks. In examining the career of a consort whose various activities are so well documented, this study helps to fill in the blanks in the documentary record of numerous consorts across early modern Europe, and serves as a model for future research on other consorts at other courts.

The year is 1991, and the ancient evil of the Nephilim, long dormant, has awakened. Ashmodiel, centuries-old Patriarch of the Children of Ramiel, has decreed that the time has come to summon their ancestor, the fallen Watcher Ramiel, from the desert realm of Duda ra, to which he has been exiled. For nurse Liz Grisanti, the terror begins when the Ramielites announce they will kidnap and sacrifice six blond, blue-eyed six-year-old children at a series of rituals between Halloween and the Winter Solstice -- and Liz's younger daughter, Bella, exactly fits the description of the cult's chosen victims. Called in as the Massachusetts State Criminal Investigation Division's specialist on cults, Detective Lieutenant Patrick Michael Pentangeli consults his mentor, occult master Trevor Faulkner, whose contacts in the field include rabbis and priests, as well as medievalist Sebastian Barber - who happens to be dating Liz Grizanti. As a series of angelic children are kidnapped and sacrificed and the days progress inexorably toward the Winter Solstice, the tightly knit circle of friends endeavors to protect Bella from falling victim to the Banim Ramiel - and, ultimately, to stop the final sacrifice before Ramiel can be summoned for from his imprisonment and free the legions of Nephilim to create a Hell on earth.
The universe is filled with secrets and lies. Who can be trusted? Thayen, Astra, and their fellow Shadians are still trapped in the alternate Shade where, aided by an uneasy alliance with Brandon and Myst, they continue their treacherous search for the rest of their missing friends and the truth behind HQ's sinister plot. Back home in the real Shade, Sofia and Derek work with the rest of the team to search for any possible clues related to Isabelle's clone. What they find opens up a whole new world of questions and raises the stakes even higher for getting Thayen's group home safely. Meanwhile, Unending is still reeling from Anunit's latest revelation and struggling with a deep anger that comes both from within herself and from a mysterious outside source. She and Tristan must work together to face their greatest challenge yet - uncovering Death's oldest lie and exposing her darkest secrets in the process. But if completing this final task could put others at risk, they may be forced to choose between their own dreams and the greater good. When light shines in the darkness, all will be revealed.
Pat Ruger is a retired detective who continues his new life on the road in an RV. Nashville is an interesting city but holds a lot of secrets that Pat must unravel, especially in the music industry, where he grudgingly agrees to help a popular country singing duo, Bobbie and June. A hit-and-run auto accident leaves the women in the hospital and it's possible that their new talent agent's disappearance is connected. What the heck is going on in the Music City?
A rumor of empathy in vicarious receptivity, understanding, interpretation, narrative, and empathic intersubjectivity becomes the scandal of empathy in Lipps and Strachey. Yet when all the philosophical arguments and categories are complete and all the hermeneutic circles spun out, we are quite simply in the presence of another human being.
Empathy is an essential component of the psychoanalyst’s ability to listen and treat their patients. It is key to the achievement of therapeutic understanding and change. A Rumor of Empathy explores the psychodynamic resistances to empathy, from the analyst themselves, the patient, from wider culture, and seeks to explore those factors which represent resistance to empathic engagement, and to show how these can be overcome in the psychoanalytic context. Lou Agosta shows that classic interventions can themselves represent resistances to empathy, such as the unexamined life; over-medication, and the application of devaluing diagnostic labels to expressions of suffering. Drawing on Freud, Kohut, Spence, and other major thinkers, Agosta explores how empathy is distinguished as a unified multidimensional clinical engagement, encompassing receptivity, understanding, interpretation and narrative. In this way, he sets out a new way of understanding and using empathy in psychoanalytic theory and clinical practice. When all the resistances have been engaged, defences analyzed, diagnostic categories applied, prescriptions written, and interpretive circles spun out, in empathy one is quite simply in the presence of another human being. Agosta depicts the unconscious forms of resistance and raises our understanding of the fears of merger that lead a therapist to take a step back from the experience of their patients, using ideas such as "alturistic surrender" and "compassion fatigue" which are highlighted in a number of clinical vignettes. Empathy itself is not self-contained. It is embedded in social and cultural values, and Agosta highlights the mental health culture and its expectations of professional organizations. This outstanding text will be relevant to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists who wish to make a contribution to reducing the suffering and emotional distress of their clients, and also to trainees who are more vulnerable to the professional demands on their capacity for empathic listening.Lou Agosta, Ph.D. teaches empathy in systems and the history of psychology at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University. He is the author of numerous articles on empathy in human relations, aesthetics, altruism, and film. He is a psychotherapist in private practice in Chicago, USA. See www.aRumorOfEmpathy.com
