Extraordinary Valor Stories of Oklahoma Veterans
When Heroes in Our Midst was published in 2016, I thought I had accomplished what I had set out to do-tell the stories of western Oklahoma veterans. However, not long after the book became available, people started coming to me and asking why I had not included certain veterans. The real reason was that they had not made their way to me through the word-of-mouth grapevine because that is the way I have found veterans willing to tell their stories. Other people realized that they too would like for their family members to be included in an anthology. So I gathered my notebooks, my camera, and my portable scanner and began again seeking out veterans and writing their stories. While this volume follows the same format as Heroes in Our Midst, without intentionally trying, I began to see a wider variety of military specialties, a trend in family service, and a greater number of world conditions under which the veterans served. First of all, often when people think of a soldier, they see a man in a combat uniform toting a rifle. While that is an accurate picture of many veterans, the truth is that the U. S. military is made up of thousands of specialties. This volume includes a diverse group of veterans who served in numerous capacities. Readers will learn about veterans who served on submarines, refueled bombers in the air, ran drug interdictions, worked as a chaplain's assistant, operated a teletype machine, participated in search and rescue after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, worked as a lighthouse keeper, participated in humanitarian efforts after hurricanes, and of course, hiked through the jungles of Vietnam as a regular infantry "grunt." Readers will also learn about a young woman who serves as an Army doctor. Second, while working on this book, I saw many veterans who had followed in the footsteps of a parent, a grandparent, a spouse, or a sibling. This book contains several stories where service to country is a valued family tradition. A sense of duty and patriotism often runs through families who serve in the military. In fact, this book contains the stories of three married couples who both chose military service. Finally, the conditions under which the veterans served vary widely. Included in this anthology is even the story of a World War I veteran, his story gleaned from family memories and documents he left behind. This book contains fewer World War II veterans' stories than Heroes in Our Midst did simply because, sadly, many of those veterans have passed on; however, many Vietnam veterans were willing to tell their stories after years of silence. This volume also contains stories of veterans of both Iraq wars and the war in Afghanistan. In addition, some veterans served in peacetime but under the very real threat of the Cold War. Other peacetime veterans helped alleviate suffering caused by natural disasters. The documentation style used in this book is the MLA (Modern Language Association) style. The pictures included with the veterans' stories in this volume are compliments of the veterans or their families unless otherwise noted. The photos of the veterans' memorials in western Oklahoma were taken by Doug Haught. It is my hope that upon delving into the stories of our Oklahoma veterans that readers will come away with a sense of appreciation for and gratitude to the many men and women who have given a part of themselves for the benefit of the United States of America and its citizens.
Unknown Valor: A Story of Family, Courage, and Sacrifice from Pearl Harbor to Iwo Jima
In honor of the 75th Anniversary of one of the most critical battles of World War II, the popular primetime Fox News anchor of The Story with Martha MacCallum pays tribute to the heroic men who sacrificed everything at Iwo Jima to defeat the Armed Forces of Emperor Hirohito--among them, a member of her own family, Harry Gray.Admiral Chester Nimitz spoke of the "uncommon valor" of the men who fought on Iwo Jima, one of the bloodiest and most brutal battles of World War II. In thirty-six grueling days, nearly 7,000 Marines were killed and 22,000 were wounded.Martha MacCallum takes us from Pearl Harbor to Iwo Jima through the lives of these men of valor, among them Harry Gray, a member of her own family. In Unknown Valor, she weaves their stories--from Boston, Massachusetts, to Gulfport, Mississippi, as told through letters and recollections--into the larger history of what American military leaders rightly saw as an eventual showdown in the Pacific with Japan. In a relentless push through the jungles of Guadalcanal, over the coral reefs of Tarawa, past the bloody ridge of Peleliu, against the banzai charges of Guam, and to the cliffs of Saipan, these men were on a path that ultimately led to the black sands of Iwo Jima, the doorstep of the Japanese Empire.Meticulously researched, heart-wrenching, and illuminating, Unknown Valor reveals the sacrifices of ordinary Marines who saved the world from tyranny and left indelible marks on those back home who loved them.Supplemental enhancement PDF accompanies the audiobook.

How did Irish and American diplomacy operate in Washington DC and Dublin during the 1930s era of economic depression, rising fascism and Nazism? How did the Anglo–American relationship affect American–Irish diplomatic relations? Why and how did Éamon de Valera and Franklin D. Roosevelt move their countries towards neutrality in 1939? This first comprehensive history of American and Irish diplomacy during the 1930s focuses on formal and informal diplomacy, examining all aspects of diplomatic life to explain the relationship between the two administrations from 1932 to 1939. Bernadette Whelan reveals how diplomats worked on behalf of their governments to implement Franklin D. Roosevelt and Éamon de Valera's foreign policies – particularly when Éamon de Valera believed in the existence of a 'special' transatlantic relationship but Franklin D. Roosevelt increasingly favoured a strong relationship with Britain. Drawing on a wide range of under-used sources, this is a major new contribution to the history of American and Irish diplomacy and revises our understanding of the importance of Ireland to a US administration.

It was forbidden, but Bradana MacGreagor could not seem to help herself. The man of her dreams was a Lennox, and Laird Lennox forbid all unions between the two clans, fervently believing that the MacGreagors were cursed. Rubbish, said the MacGreagors, but that did nothing to persuade the Lennox. Too soon, her destiny was taken completely out of her hands when word came that the king had called all able-bodied men to fight for Scotland.
Beyond Valor: A World War II Story of Extraordinary Heroism, Sacrificial Love, and a Race Against Time
On April 12, 1945, a fleet of American B-29 bombers flew toward Japan. Their mission was simple: Stop World War II by burning the cities, factories, and military bases of the Japanese empire, thereby forcing an unconditional surrender. But it didn't go as planned. Beyond Valor is one soldier's extraordinary tale of bravery, faith, and devotion.Onboard one of the B-29s, the City of Los Angeles, a phosphorus bomb detonated inside the plane. Staff Sergeant Henry E. "Red" Erwin absorbed the blast of burning phosphorus and managed to throw the still-flaming bomb overboard before collapsing from the third-degree burns that covered his body.Breaking protocol, the plane diverted to a military hospital at Iwo Jima. President Truman quickly ordered that Erwin be awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest honor of the American military.Drawn from in-depth interviews with eyewitnesses and deep archival research, Beyond Valor tells the gripping story of Erwin's life--from his upbringing in the suburbs of Birmingham, Alabama to his enduring commitment to supporting veterans. Beyond Valor gives you a front-row seat to Erwin's amazing life and legacy. Along the way, you'll learn: How Erwin's childhood in Birmingham shaped his faith and his familyHow a split-second decision changed the course of his lifeThe countless ways that Erwin chose to give back to his fellow veterans after he returned homeBeyond Valor is about more than that fateful day in April 1945. It's a story of one man's journey from the ultimate despair to a place beyond service, beyond honor, and beyond valor: a life illuminated by the light of God's love.

Unresolved trauma can manifest itself in a variety of ways, and often the symptoms show up years later. This is a practical guide for healing trauma naturally and for overcoming symptoms of trauma, including anxiety, panic, and depression by addressing the three areas where trauma lives: 1) the body, 2) the brain, and 3) the gut. Unresolved trauma can manifest itself in a variety of physical, mental, and emotional ways, and often the symptoms show up years later. When we use the tools that movement, mindfulness, and good nutrition arm us with, we can become more grounded and more aware of those things that are happening within us, and where they stem from. We can then deal with them in productive ways and dig down into the root cause, rather than getting caught up in this vicious cycle in perpetuity, causing ourselves more and more trauma and destruction in the process. We can rise up once and for all and live the life we were meant to live. Through Rise, Liz Arch gives others the tools they need to lift themselves up through the pain and stagnation of trauma, anxiety, and depression, to heal and empower them so that they, too, can live the happy, fulfilled life we all deserve. Rise is a handbook of hope. It is a practical guide for healing trauma naturally and for overcoming symptoms of trauma, including anxiety, panic, and depression. This book offers a triad approach to healing trauma by addressing the three areas where trauma lives: 1) the body, 2) the brain, and 3) the gut. It provides invaluable insight into understanding the nature of trauma and shares practical and effective tools readers can immediately implement to begin releasing trauma, strengthening their emotional resiliency, and transforming pain into their greatest power.
