A generation before the coming of `The Munshi' (Abdul Karim) onto the royal scene, Queen Victoria had become dangerously enraptured by a handsome teenage maharaja. Duleep Singh, a recent convert to Christianity, came to England as an exiled boy-king who had once ruled over a vast swathe of rich territories nestled between British India and Afghanistan. But he was forced to relinquish all - including the most expensive diamond the world had ever known - to Victoria's conquering Raj. Good-looking, a lover of hawks, hunting and women, and brimming with artistic and musical talent, Duleep soon secured a status as an exotic ornament in fashionable Victorian society. His fellow adventurer, the future King Edward VII, made frequent visits to his country estate in Suffolk, home to his growing family (a daughter, Sophia, would become a leading suffragette). And yet as firmly rooted in British society as he was, as a `native' he was not of it. Denied real acceptance and the hope of leaving an inheritance for his children, gambling and chorus girls were not enough to assuage the now middle-aged former emperor. Many books have been written about the Victoria Cross and its recipients.The first published work on the subject appeared in 1857 – the same year as the first VC investiture. A resurgence of interest in the 1990s led to the publication of numerous new titles, but there was no comprehensive bibliography of the Victoria Cross until John Mulholland and Alan Jordan’s first volume appeared in 1999, representing the efforts of a team of researchers in the UK, Canada and Australia.This second edition completely updates their research, increasing the number of books listed, annotated and cross-referenced from 640 to around 1,100, and including all the Journals of the Victoria Cross Society. Part I contains a listing of all key VC titles; Part II lists non-fiction and fictional books written by VC recipients; and the index lists, in alphabetical order, every VC recipient with the date of the London Gazette citation. Additionally it identifies the books in which the recipients are referred to significantly, enabling the researcher to quickly identify key works.The bibliography is an important contribution to Victoria Cross literature and an essential, up-to-date reference guide for anyone with an interest in the decoration.

Kirkoswald and Renwick is thefirst parish history to be produced by the Cumbria County History Trust incollaboration with Lancaster University for the Victoria County History ofCumbria. Covering 30 square miles of agricultural land and moorland, the moderncivil parish of Kirkoswald lies between the river Eden and the Pennine heights,on the western edge of the North Pennine Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.Kirkoswald township, anciently a market and small industrial centre, lies ninemiles north east of Penrith. Until 1566 Kirkoswald Castle was the principalseat of the powerful Barons Dacre of the North whose massive landholdingsextended over six counties. In 1523 Lord Thomas Dacre translated St Oswald'schurch, a pre-conquest foundation for which the village is named, to collegiatestatus, and after the Reformation the college became a gentleman's residence,acquired in 1611 by the Fetherstonhaugh family whose home it still is after 400years and 11 generations of descent.The economy, largely dependenton agriculture, benefited for 600 years from Kirkoswald's role as a market andbusiness centre, with some manufacturing (textiles, paper and timber) poweredby the waters of the Raven Beck. From 1631 to about 1850 there was coal miningon the Pennine Edge (with associated lime-burning). In the 21st century theparish remains an unspoilt and beautiful corner of England, home to some 30farms specialising in animal husbandry, and many retired people and commutersto Penrith and Carlisle.
