An Amish Paradox

An Amish Paradox

Holmes County, Ohio, is home to the largest and most diverse Amish community in the world. Yet, surprisingly, it remains relatively unknown compared to its famous cousin in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Charles E. Hurst and David L. McConnell conducted seven years of fieldwork, including interviews with over 200 residents, to understand the dynamism that drives social change and schism within the settlement, where Amish enterprises and nonfarming employment have prospered. The authors contend that the Holmes County Amish are experiencing an unprecedented and complex process of change as their increasing entanglement with the non-Amish market causes them to rethink their religious convictions, family practices, educational choices, occupational shifts, and health care options. The authors challenge the popular image of the Amish as a homogeneous, static, insulated society, showing how the Amish balance tensions between individual needs and community values. They find that self-made millionaires work alongside struggling dairy farmers; successful female entrepreneurs live next door to stay-at-home mothers; and teenagers both embrace and reject the coming-of-age ritual, rumspringa. An Amish Paradox captures the complexity and creativity of the Holmes County Amish, dispelling the image of the Amish as a vestige of a bygone era and showing how they reinterpret tradition as modernity encroaches on their distinct way of life.

The Amish Struggle with Modernity

Throughout their history, the Amish communities of North America have tried to remain separate from the currents of progress that swirl in the larger society. The authors and others argue that although the nation's nearly 140,000 Amish continue to resist the influence of worldly institutions, the communities have nonetheless acquiesced to modernity in significant ways. Such change has not been easy and The Amish Struggle with Modernity examines on a national scale dilemmas that arise when a people devoted to plain living face the complexities of modern life.

The Amish Research Guide: Crafted for the Englisher Writer and Non-Writer
AMISH FACTS, FAITH, BELIEFS, LIFESTYLE, HISTORY, RELIGION... ALL IN ONE VOLUME✓Are you fascinated by the Amish and want to learn more about them? Would you like to write an Amish novel but don't know enough about them to create genuine Amish characters living in a true-to-life Amish community? For many reasons, we are drawn to this group of people, determined to stay faithful to their traditional values even as the rest of the world moves on.Who exactly are the Amish? Are they a religious cult? A bunch of reclusive kooks? Or are they a legitimate Christian denomination? When you use the word Amish, more questions than answers materialize. Do they really believe that forswearing electricity makes a person "holier"? How can they be so cruel as to shun, ostracize a fellow member for wearing a hat that has a slightly too narrow brim width? Do they major in minors? The Amish are a source of interest worldwide, although today, they are found only in North America. They are both admired and reviled for their dogged determination to remain separated from the world, to stay true to their Anabaptist roots. Family, friends, faith are principles that guide and shape them. They seek to incorporate their interpretations of Biblical teaching into every aspect of their day-to-day lives.Because of the popularity of all things Amish, non-Amish "Englishers," especially writers, are being challenged to learn all they can about their way of life. This is difficult when the subjects are determined to live off by themselves, effectually caught off from modern-day society. Solid research becomes crucial, especially for non-Amish writers who have little to no personal experience with this self-isolated group. The Amish Research Guide was written with the Englisher writer of fiction and/or nonfiction in mind but is also of value to the reader who wants to learn more about the elusive group. This book compiles facts and useful information into one reference tool that will save valuable time when completing that required research. Written by an Englisher who has been hired to ghostwrite Amish fiction and spent hours researching in order to ensure accuracy, The Amish Research Guide will help the writer finish researching and get on with writing as swiftly as possible, or give the interested reader a richer insight into all things Amish. If you'd rather be writing than researching, this book is for you ★
