Andrea Robbins & Max Becher: Portraits

This volume is the first to examine the portrait photographs of this esteemed husband-and-wife team. The artists' portraits--like their radical landscapes and city-scenes--are powerfully evocative, boldly subverting our expectations of the discipline of portraiture: Rather than capturing the visual essence of a sitter, they reveal identity to be multifarious, transitive and culturally and historically bound. They capture their subjects in ways that transform, enhance and accentuate social and cultural meaning, doing so with the full complicity and respect of the people they photograph. Robbins and Becher spend weeks living with each community they document. They immerse themselves in the stories of its citizens and history, interviewing residents, participating in their customs, photographing them at work, play and home. Most important, they allow their subjects to represent themselves--not only as they would like to been seen, but in ways that illuminate their complex humanity.

This fascinating and beautifully illustrated book presents for the first time the rediscovered frescoes painted by Andrea Sacchi (1599–1661) for the loggia of Cardinal del Monte’s Roman palace near via di Ripetta, Rome. Considered lost by generations of scholars, Andrea Sacchi’s fresco cycle has survived in a private apartment in Rome. Largely unpublished and rarely mentioned in recent literature, the frescoes underwent a revelatory restoration in 2010–11. For the past three years, the author was granted exclusive access to study them thoroughly – resulting in this monograph. Accompanied by beautiful and full photographic documentation, this study compares the painted images with the detailed description given by the biographer Giovan Pietro Bellori; it sheds light on the iconography and style, above all with respect to the sources used; and integrates this key commission within Sacchi’s early career. The cycle’s iconography is explored with careful verification of early sources that now allows us to resolve some particularly complex problems of interpretation – above all those relating to alchemy. Cardinal del Monte’s Palazzo di Ripetta housed a fully equipped pharmacological laboratory. Research on this cycle of frescoes has also made it possible to discover new archival evidence regarding Sacchi’s date and place of birth.

The first book on Peruvian-American artist Andrea Morales, whose photographs honor her community and their activism in Memphis and the surrounding region. This vibrant catalog showcases a decade's work by Peruvian-American photographer Andrea Morales (b. 1984), whose camera captures community life and activism in the American South, particularly in her home city of Memphis, Tennessee. It accompanies her first major exhibition at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, represents the first scholarly publication on her work, and the first major museum exhibition dedicated to movement journalism. Memphis has long been a place bubbling with social movements. Roll Down Like Water—a nod to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s iconic last speech in the city—shows Morales's incredible ability to engage with her subjects. From intimate portraits and records of daily life to the documentation of social and environmental movements with local and national resonance, her photography builds a passionate and tender portrait of this unique part of the South. Morales centers her practice on building long-term relationships with the communities she photographs and views this relationship as one of collaboration rather than detached observation. Her approach is informed by movement journalism, which recognizes that journalism, like the camera, is not totally objective. By establishing a human connection between chronicler and people and rooting it in an ethical and rigorous framework, Morales's community-driven visual storytelling reaches beyond historical injustice to capture the liveliness and joy of the communities she photographs. For Memphis and Morales, King's words loom large. Echoing his description of collective liberation as "an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny," Morales's captivating images of the South chart new, sustainable paths in photojournalism, while reflecting upon identity, community, and the power of storytelling.

Andrea Víctrix presents a dystopian vision of Palma, Mallorca, now named ‘Turclub’, in the year 2050. The unnamed narrator, who bears a certain resemblance to the author, had placed himself in voluntary cryo-stasis in 1965, fatigued by modern ‘civilization’ and morality, only to reawaken 85 years later with the physique of a 30-year old. Villalonga sets up an intriguing interplay between the narrator and the eponymous, androgynous Andrea Víctrix, so-called Director of Pleasure, in a satirical, sometimes self-ironizing exploration of contemporary issues such as gender and sexuality, consumerism, environmental disaster and the politics of big business. Both of its time and startlingly prescient, Andrea Víctrix merits a place amongst the greats of European dystopian fiction.

A 40-year overview of Blum’s career working at the interface of art, architecture and design, leading up to her focus on our engagement with the natural world Andrea Blum (born 1950) is a New York–based artist who has worked at the intersection of art, architecture and design since the 1970s. She has exhibited at a wide range of venues and has built projects in Europe and the United States that include public installations, furniture, exhibition design, libraries and other designs for living. Blum’s work considers the relationship of the sociopolitical world to the private psychological one, zooming in and out of the conditions that organize us as a culture, with a focus on the "down time"—when one eats, reads and is in repose—as the time when the border between private behavior and public etiquette is most evidenced. Accompanying an expansive exhibition of the same name at Hunter College Art Galleries, Biota is lavishly illustrated with extensive photography of Blum’s early sculpture, public works, exhibitions, installations and propositions of the past 40 years. The book includes new essays and a conversation between the artist and Allan Schwartzman, all of which explore Blum’s practice and artmaking philosophy. This book was published in association with Hunter College Art Galleries

Between art and activism, from climate change to immigration: the multimedia work of Andrea Bowers Based in Los Angeles, Andrea Bowers (born 1965) constructs her practice around the notions of collaboration, representation and engagement. Through her dedication to social and environmental justice, as well as her partnerships with activist organizations and various protest movements, Bowers has renegotiated her role as artist in society. Running throughout her drawings, paintings, videos and installations is a rigorous reevaluation of the concepts, structures and images that have guided our relentless search for meaning and justice. With work that is at once hyper-conceptual and socially engaged, Bowers creates spaces within which to share and evaluate the potential of art as a tool for social progress—while serving as witness and documentarian to the work of activists worldwide. This book is a comprehensive and definitive survey of Bowers’ work to date and investigates some of the key, longstanding interests that have guided her practice. Critical pieces from writers of various backgrounds and fields position Bowers’ practice in the context of the movements, histories and struggles that make up these broader concerns. Accompanying these illuminating texts are full-color illustrations of works, including a selection of Bowers’ well-known neon sculptures and large-scale installations, as well as numerous other drawings, paintings, photographs and video works.
