Chaos Ethics

Chaos Ethics

Balance has no meaning for a politics that is merely the continuation of war by other means. Both religious zealots and defenders of scientific fact declare a monopoly on truth and the moral law, while radicals are powerless to resist since they have lost faith that ethics can be anything but arbitrary. Meanwhile, insane bureaucracy devastates life while nations fall into dishonor as they abandon their promises of justice. If the moral law cannot save us, perhaps it is time to try moral chaos. Chaos Ethics collides philosophers such as Kant, Nietzsche, Levinas, Mary Midgley, Alasdair MacInytre, Alain Badiou, Isabelle Stengers, and Bruno Latour with everything from cyberpunk science fiction and the fantasy novels of Michael Moorcock to Google, gay marriage, drone assassinations, and the ethics of cats and dogs. A strange and wondrous journey through morality viewed as a facet of imagination that offers a new perspective in which the diversity of ethics is a strength not a weakness, hesitation is more noble than certainty, and virtue can be expressed in both law and chaos.

Can games be art? When film critic Roger Ebert claimed in 2010 that videogames could never be art it was seen as a snub by many gamers. But from the perspective of philosophy of art this question was topsy turvey, since according to one of the most influential theories of representation all art is a game. Kendall Walton's prop theory explains how we interact with paintings, novels, movies and other artworks in terms of imaginary games, like a child's game of make-believe, wherein the artwork acts as a prop prescribing specific imaginings, and in this view there can be no question that games are indeed a strange and wonderful form of art. In Imaginary Games, game designer and philosopher Chris Bateman expands Walton's prop theory to videogames, board games, collectible card games like Pokemon and Magic: the Gathering, and tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. The book explores the many different fictional worlds that influence the modern world, the ethics of games, and the curious role the imagination plays in everything from religion to science and mathematics.

More than any other challenging behaviour, the sexual abuse of one child by another generates anxiety, puzzlement and confusion.Adults confident in dealing with a defiant or delinquent child find their confidence leaves them when confronted with sexual misbehaviour in a child who they expect to be asexual. In this book, Jackie Bateman and Judith Milner provide an accessible overview of the evidence relating to such problem behaviours, from inappropriate behaviour to sexual abuse. They go on to propose research-based effective and creative methods that professionals can use to develop responsibility-taking and safety in the child, and outline a strengths-based model for practice. Using the model, the authors show how behaviour can be managed through the development of safe care plans for the home and/or school - addressing communication, supervision, and supportive networks. They also provide guidance for working across a range of settings - whether directly with families, in schools or with children with learning difficulties. This practical guide will be an essential tool for social workers, counsellors, teachers, nurses and any professional with responsibility for child protection.

Most professionals working in health or social care will be required to act as advocates as part of their work. A social worker or community nurse may need to obtain extra benefits or a particular service for a client; a housing official may need to help a tenant whose benefit has been delayed thus placing them at risk of homelessness; a voluntary body may decide to challenge a statement of special educational needs for a child. This is a practical guide to advocacy skills specifically written for those in the health and social care professions. Neil Bateman examines the function of advocacy within these professions and how to interview, negotiate and self-manage successfully. He provides a structure for advocacy, a guide to the ethical implications and advice on litigation and legal matters. Accessible and comprehensive, Advocacy Skills for Health and Social Care Professionals will be an essential resource for all those wishing to improve their practice.

Oliver is an elusive new addition to the dysfunctional small town of Dalbegie, Scotland. Unaware of his dangerous side, divorcee Lauren is charmed by Oliver's brief yet charismatic appearances. Lauren has become the latest victim of Oliver's exclusive, secret club, nondescriptrambunctious.com. After Lauren's disappearance, her only daughter Lizzy is left distraught and vulnerable. Under the sloppy care of her extended family, she rapidly spirals into rebellion. Oliver's matter-of-fact justification for what he does leads the reader to contemplate the idea that the most "successful" killers are often the most unlikely suspects. They might not appear evil at first glance-take for example Ted Bundy, or "Canada's bright, shining lie," former Colonel and rapist/murderer Russell Williams. In a society that has become increasingly desensitized, heinous acts of violence are just one more news item to be consumed. Could we go so far as to feel sympathy for a serial killer? In 'Nondescript Rambunctious', we find cruelty at its most devestating-and empathy where we least expected. "Jackie Bateman's debut novel is very impressive. The writing is taut, led, and relentless. 'Nondescript Rambunctious' is a dark, murderous thriller, a winner with a variety of narrators, surprising turns and shifts, and some hard, hard corners." Mark Anthony Jarman, author of 'My White Planet' and '19 Knives' "...'Nondescript Rambunctious', for which Jackie Bateman won the Writer's Studio at Simon Fraser University's First Book Competition in the fiction category, is a thriller that succeeds by nodding politely to the formula, then turning it on its head. The novel has four narrators, but Bateman weaves their voices together effortlessly, and the build-up retains all the suspense and intensity one expects from a crime thriller. ... Bateman hasn't imagined a world of dogged cops, rumpled detectives, or amateur sleuths. 'Nondescript Rambunctious' is about the heartbreaking consequences of human depravity, not tying up loose ends or piecing together clues. It wouldn't be wrong to label this novel a thriller, but it also confounds the expectations of that label, to great effect." Quill & Quire

The discovery of one of Roman Londons most significant buildings - its amphitheatre - underneath the medieval Guildhall resulted from major archaeological excavations which took place between 1985 and 1999 as part of the City of London Corporations ambitious programme of redevelopment at the Guildhall. The history of the Guildhall and its precinct from the 12th to the 20th centuries is the subject of a companion volume. This book describes the construction, development and disuse of the amphitheatre, from the 1st to 4th centuries AD. Constructed on relatively low ground in the north-west part of Londinium, the first amphitheatre was built in c AD 74 of timber. Evidence was recovered for the eastern entrance, arena palisade, bank for seating and associated drains. The amphitheatre was rebuilt shortly after AD 120, with masonry foundations and walls, associated with new timber stands. The evidence allows conjectural reconstruction and comparison with other British amphitheatres. Abandoned by the mid 4th century, the amphitheatre was largely demolished and sealed by dark earth. The arena may have survived as an oval depression until the area was reoccupied in the 11th century. Significant finds assemblages include an early 2nd-century dump of glass cullet, lead curses from the arena surface and samian pottery with gladiatorial motifs. The amphitheatres remains are preserved and displayed in the basement of the new Guildhall Art Gallery.

ARE YOU A VIRTUOUS CYBORG? You do everything on your smartphone and love it – you are, now and forevermore, a cyborg. But how would you know if you were a good cyborg? Game designer and philosopher Chris Bateman explores cyborg virtue through problems such as cyberbullying, ‘fake news’, and the indifference of computers to human needs. Bateman reveals our shallow-sightedness in the face of the unfathomable complexity of our cybernetic networks. Critical yet optimistic, The Virtuous Cyborg rises to the challenge of the twenty-first century by asking us to ponder the question of what kind of cyborgs we want to become.

Poetry. "I say Claire Bateman is weirder, deeper, weirdeeper, and in that way better than the poets some say are so damned good. Those poets just make me go 'Huh?' and 'Oh, sure, ' whereas Bateman makes me go 'Sheesh!' and 'Holy espresso!'"--Mark Halliday
