Language Contact in Europe

Language Contact in Europe

Bridget Drinka

Cambridge University Press
2017
sidottu
This comprehensive new work provides extensive evidence for the essential role of language contact as a primary trigger for change. Unique in breadth, it traces the spread of the periphrastic perfect across Europe over the last 2,500 years, illustrating at each stage the micro-responses of speakers and communities to macro-historical pressures. Among the key forces claimed to be responsible for normative innovations in both eastern and western Europe is 'roofing' - the superstratal influence of Greek and Latin on languages under the influence of Greek Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism respectively. The author provides a new interpretation of the notion of 'sprachbund', presenting the model of a three-dimensional stratified convergence zone, and applies this model to her analysis of the have and be perfects within the Charlemagne sprachbund. The book also tackles broader theoretical issues, for example, demonstrating that the perfect tense should not be viewed as a universal category.
Race Relations in Colonial Trinidad 1870–1900

Race Relations in Colonial Trinidad 1870–1900

Bridget Brereton

Cambridge University Press
2002
pokkari
In this study of the development of a colonial Caribbean territory in the late nineteenth century the diverse peoples of Trinidad - Europeans, white Creoles of French, Spanish and English descent, Africans, Creole blacks, Venezuelans, Chinese and Indian immigrants - occupy the centre stage. They formed a society deeply divided along lines of race, skin colour, economic position and educational level. Dr Brereton looks at how the white elite, both European and Creole, was able to control the society, largely unchecked by the Imperial power and its agents in Trinidad, and then investigates the emergence of a group which would challenge that control: the coloured and black middle class. This book makes an important contribution to the history of the West Indies, and especially to the history of Trinidad, still largely unresearched. It will interest historians and sociologists concerned with the development of post-emancipation Caribbean societies and with race relations in the Americas after slavery.
Illustrated Pathology of the Spleen

Illustrated Pathology of the Spleen

Bridget S. Wilkins; Dennis H. Wright

Cambridge University Press
2000
sidottu
The major aim of this book is to de-mystify splenic pathology for non-specialist consultants and trainees in histopathology. The interpretation of pathological changes in the human spleen provides a significant challenge to the skills of even the most highly trained histopathologists. This comprehensive account of the most important and frequently encountered pathological conditions affecting the spleen is highly illustrated in colour throughout with numerous detailed macroscopic and microscopic specimens. Emphasis is placed upon the importance of adequate clinical information and technical preparation of splenectomy specimens in obtaining the best possible histopathological assessment of the tissue. A systematic, analytical approach to interpretation of pathological changes is used throughout the book. This should enable readers to feel confident in their assessment of significant processes within the spleen. This volume serves as an illustrated atlas, a bench manual, as a text, and as a source of reference, and will be an indispensable guide.
Empire on the English Stage 1660–1714

Empire on the English Stage 1660–1714

Bridget Orr

Cambridge University Press
2001
sidottu
Contesting the current consensus that Restoration and early eighteenth-century drama referred almost exclusively to domestic social and political issues, Empire on the English Stage 1660–1714 shows that the theatre was a crucial location for debates over England’s contemporaneous colonial expansion. The book provides a comprehensive account of colonialism, national identity and the representation of race and ethnicity on stage. Joining current historical discussions of the development of British imperial ideology, Bridget Orr argues that dramatic texts and production provide a rich and unexamined archive in which the issues attendant on the emergence of the first empire figure largely. Her account not only sheds new light on plays by Dryden, Orrery, Behn, Wycherley, and Southerne but redirects attention to popular but now marginal texts by Settle, Sedley, Dennis and Charles Shadwell. Attention to the imperial themes of these dramatists decisively redraws the map of Restoration and early eighteenth-century drama.
The Cult of the Virgin Mary in Early Modern Germany

The Cult of the Virgin Mary in Early Modern Germany

Bridget Heal

Cambridge University Press

What happened to the fervent Marian piety of the late Middle Ages during Germany's Reformation and Counter-Reformation? It has been widely assumed that Mary disappeared from Protestant devotional life and subsequently became a figurehead for the Catholic Church's campaign of religious reconquest. This book presents a more finely nuanced account of the Virgin's significance. In many Lutheran territories Marian liturgy and images - from magnificent altarpieces to simple paintings and prints - survived, though their meaning was transformed. In Catholic areas baroque art and piety flourished, but the militant Virgin associated with the Counter-Reformation did not always dominate religious devotion. Traditional manifestations of Marian veneration persisted, despite the post-Tridentine Church's attempts to dictate a uniform style of religious life. This book demonstrates that local context played a key role in shaping Marian piety, and explores the significance of this diversity of Marian practice for women's and men's experiences of religious change.

When Baby Billy is born with a mustache, his family takes it in stride. They are reassured when he nobly saves the day in imaginary-play sessions as a cowboy or cop and his mustache looks good-guy great. But as time passes, their worst fears are confirmed when little Billy’s mustache starts to curl up at the ends in a suspiciously villainous fashion. Sure enough, “Billy’s disreputable mustache led him into a life of dreadful crime.”
Shell, Beak, Tusk: Shared Traits and the Wonders of Adaptation
We think of evolution as a tree with branches that make clear, linear sense - with one animal and its traits clearly derived from one that came before it genetically. But what about animals who share key traits but aren't on the same family tree? This is called convergent evolution, and it's the big idea that Bridget Heos tackles in a kid-friendly way in Shell, Beak, Tusk. From mammals to reptiles, and everything in between, Heos manages to make some intriguing comparisons and bring to life theories of evolution and convergent evolution in bite-sized, easily digested chunks of fun facts, illustrated with full-colour photography throughout.

Empathy in Education

Empathy in Education

Bridget Cooper

Bloomsbury Academic

Empathy in Education discusses the role of empathy in learning throughout all levels of education and its crucial relationship to motivation, values development and achievement, impacting from the micro to the macro levels of society. Using initial research involving interviews with teachers and student teachers in many different contexts, from nursery to sixth form lessons along side neuroscience, psychology and educational research, the author considers the intrinsic nature of affect and empathic human relationships in learning. At a time when politicians are calling for personalized learning and the promotion of good citizenship but are still advocating an intensive, rigid curriculum, in large, one size fits all, classes, this study highlights the inherent contradictions in rhetoric and practice. Cooper offers a detailed study in empathy in teaching and learning which sheds light on the learning process in intricate detail and gives balance to the strong emphasis on mechanistic learning, curriculum and cognition which has dominated the last twenty years of learning theory and sets a foundation for future research into affective and moral issues in learning.

Dark Comedy / Characters: 5m, 1f / Interior In The Faculty Room, Bridget Carpenter explores the darker side of high school life from the inside of that mythic room, the teacher's lounge. English teacher Adam, Drama teacher Zoe and Ethics teacher Bill, along with mysterious new World History teacher Carver, are all taunted by the disembodied voice of Principal Dennis on the P.A. system. Dedicated yet desperate, inspired yet burnt out, hateful yet loving - the teachers of Madison Feury High are a bundle of contradictions in Carpenter's rich portrait. A funny and caustic look at how truly f*cked up the relationships between teachers and students can get, The Faculty Room erupts with gunshots, desperate longing, and a growing wave of spiritual fanaticism. Our education system may never recover. Winner of the Kesselring Prize for Playwriting. "Lively black comedy...A rollercoaster course...Shalwitz gives the evening a snappy, agitated flair. 3m, 2f and 2 dancers / Comedy / Unit set Fall brings us to a three-week getaway "Swing Camp," where middle-aged married couples like Jill and Dog practice their steps, mingle with other dance enthusiasts, and rekindle the flame. Their teenage daughter Lydia, however, is decidedly not an enthusiast in any sense, preferring scuba classes and sarcasm to the magic of the Shim Sham, shags and Lindy Hops that have dancers - and their accompanying passions - swirling all around her. Lydia's self-imposed isolation gives way when Mr. Gonzales, her mother's quiet colleague, begins to pay attention to her. She learns to dance; she allows herself to fall in love. When Lydia's dance teacher Gopal reveals Lydia's secret, her family is unexpectedly tested. Ultimately, Lydia and Jill come to realize that leading and following are skills crucial not only to swing dancers, but to mothers and daughters as well. "...[the play] serves up some gentle truths about life, love and what your family is really worth. Seasoned with the music of the '40s and spiced with a little romance, it's a tasty morsel, if not a full meal." - CultureVulture.net
