Colne

Colne

Geoff Crambie

The History Press Ltd
2000
nidottu
The old Lancashire market town of Colne is overlooked on one side by the mighty bulk of Pendle Hill, infamous for its associations with the Lancashire witches, and flanked on the other by the charming Yorkshire village of Haworth, home of the Bronte family. Colne, however, has many claims to historical fame itself, not least as the home to two famous gentlemen bearing the name of Hartley. Sir William Pickles Hartley, founder of the Hartley's jams empire was born in Colne and made his first jam there and Wallace Hartley, the bandmaster on the ill-fated RMS Titanic who continued to play as the great ship sank also hailed from the Colne. This book covers a wide range of subject interest in Colne, including old views of the streets and buildings, people at work in now lost industries, carnivals and Whitsuntide processions and a selection of some of the town's best know personalities.

In this further selection of archive images the Canvey Island of the past has been evocatively recreated using over 200 photographs, postcards and engravings which illustrate the diverse history of this fascinating Essex island. This volume documents the important events and features which have shaped the island's history. From the time the pioneering engineer Brigadier-General R. B. Colvin built the bridge that connected Canvey Islanders to their neighbour Benfleet, to the beginnings of the resort that flourished in the heyday of the 1950s seaside holiday, Canvey Island has supported a unique and fascinating community. When Dutch settlers established one of the earliest communities on the island in the seventeenth century, their concern about providing defence from the sea's ravages was to be of paramount importance to future inhabitants. Despite numerous breaches of the sea wall defences Canvey Island has survived and continues to be a prominent feature in the south Essex landscape. "Canvey Island: The Second Selection" is a valuable pictorial history which will delight those who live and have lived in this area and for those who wish to revisit the former island communities as they used to be.

With its vast system of enclosed docks and one and a half thousand working wharves, London was once the world's greatest port. Ships arrived from far and near, at the rate of 1,000 movements each week, requiring a workforce of 100,000. A revolution in cargo handling led to radical changes in the size and design of ships and London's port would never be the same again: most of the docks and wharves closed for business; the shipping scene moving downriver where new larger ships could berth; upriver quaysides were re-invented as locations for expensive commercial and residential properties. This book takes the reader on a fascinating journey through a period of change from the latter years of London's docks up to the present day. With its wealth of illustrations, it demonstrates how the Port of London has re-emerged as a premier British port, equipped to handle the most sophisticated modern ship, with further expansion planned. Recent decades have been a memorable era for everyone connected with the port.

And the Crew Went Too

The end of the Second World War saw one of the largest mass migrations ever seen from Europe. Millions left their homelands for new horizons and Britain was no exception. Australia, New Zealand and Canada all needed many thousands of new workers so that they could grow and prosper. The Governments of these countries offered ‘assisted passages’, effectively subsidising the fare so that the emigrants would only pay a maximum of £10. These voyages, which peaked in the early 1960s continued into the 1970s. The new homelands benefited by taking skilled workers from the Old World and sometimes even the crew jumped ship to take advantage of the opportunities in the new world. Geoff Lunn tells the history of this most massive of mass migrations, using interviews with emigrants to enliven the story.
