Through an extensive search of newspapers, the use of local history material and of the limited business and organisational records that are available, he gathers little-known information on the world of Scottish journalism and on the people who provided the mass of the population with their news and tried to shape their attitudes. By focusing on different regions, he moves away from earlier rather sweeping generalisations on a key part of the media in Scotland, and he assesses the extent of continuity and change in a crucial century.

The permanent effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) are not limited to the person who suffers the injury. People who care for the individual, particularly family members, suffer in various ways. Family members are often confused as to the behavioral and neuropsychological changes that they see in a brain-injured rela­ tive. They can become frustrated and angry when the individual does not return to premorbid levels of functioning. They can become tired and worn down from repeated problems in trying to manage the individual's difficulties while having only fragmented information regarding them. Drs. Smith and Godfrey have provided a useful service for family members by summarizing important neuropsychological changes associated with TBI and providing practical guidelines for coping with these problems. While the neuropsychological problems they describe are not completely understood, the authors provide a useful description of many of the neuro­ behavioral problems seen following TBI in young adults. They attempt to provide guidelines for family members that have practical utility in understanding and managing these patients. Theirs is a cognitive-behavioral approach that can have utility for this group of individuals. I applaud their efforts to provide something systematic and practical for family members.

Global and regional integration present special challenges to federal political systems around the world. The division of powers inherent in federal political systems complicates the impact of external pressures on the nation-state and confuses the possible responses to these pressures. In The Implications of Global and Regional Integration for the Future of Federal Political Systems each chapter analyzes the respective federation may look under a variety of future international scenarios. The broad conclusion of the study is that the specific impact of regional and global integration on each federation depends on the situational context and institutional structure of the federation. The study also concludes that global and regional integration has more impact on federal processes than institutional change. This reflects the fact that actors within institutions can respond to external pressures without necessarily reforming the institutions. The case studies consequently provide important lessons for students of comparative politics. The study makes clear that "globalization" is a multifaceted phenomenon, and it illustrates the wide range of institutional variations among federations. Policy makers in federal political systems will also appreciate the varied lessons to be learned from the differential impact of global and regional integration on federations around the world. Drawing on both Canadian and Japanese sources, this book investigates the life, work, and attitudes of Canadian Protestant missionaries in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan (the three main constituent parts of the pre-1945 Japanese empire) from the arrival of the first Canadian missionary in East Asia in 1872 until 1931. Canadian missionaries made a significant contribution to the development of the Protestant movement in the Japanese Empire. Yet their influence also extended far beyond the Christian sphere. Through their educational, social, and medical work; their role in introducing new Western ideas and social pursuits; and their outspoken criticism of the brutalities of Japanese rule in colonial Korea and Taiwan, the activities of Canadian missionaries had an impact on many different facets of society and culture in the Japanese Empire. Missionaries residing in the Japanese Empire served as a link between citizens of Japan and Canada and acted as trusted interpreters of things Japanese to their home constituents.

The influx of Protestant missionaries from Britain to Japan, Korea and Taiwan was an integral part of the British presence in East Asia from 1865 to 1945. Ion draws on both British and Japanese sources to examine the life, work and attitudes of the British missionaries, women and men, who ventured far from their homeland to preach the gospel. He explores the role played by British Protestants as both Christian missionaries and informal ambassadors of their own country and civilization. Through their educational, social and medical work the missionaries helped introduce Western ideas and social pursuits which in turn affected different facets of society and culture in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The study illustrates how the British missionaries' intent to introduce Christianity was affected by the response of the East Asians to Western ideas. In describing the high drama of the British missionary movement's pioneering days in the late nineteenth century to its persecution during the late 1930s, Ion casts light on a particular, yet important, aspect of the changing tides of Anglo-Japanese relations. This book will ably complement his previous study of Canadian missionaries in East Asia during the same period. One hundred years ago the Labour Representation Committee was formed - this is usually taken as the founding meeting of the Labour Party. However a month before, in January 1900, the Scottish Workers' Parliamentary Election Committee was established to achieve the same things in Scotland - the election of working-class representatives to the House of Commons who would act independently of the existing political parties. This reflected the way many of the moves towards independent Labour were pioneered in Scotland. Many of the key figures in the early Labour Party were Scots - Hardie, MacDonald, Wilkie, Henderson and Curran - and Scots have continued to play a disproportionate role in the shaping of Labour politics. This book traces the Scottish route from radical protest at the end of the eighteenth century to the formation and development of the Labour Party through to 1922 when Labour became the largest party in Scotland. The story ends with coverage of the way in which Labour had consolidated its dominance of Scottish politics to the end of the twentieth century and considers the way in which popular radicalism in recent decades has found new directions. The book consists of twenty interviews with current and former editors of zines. Authors Hogg and Ironside travelled across Britain to carry out the interviews face to face over a period of five years. They sought to examine the widest possible range of publications, from the science fiction zines of the 1930s to a zine begun by a ten-year-old editor during the Covid pandemic. This is a volume that celebrates amateurism, and will be cherished by those who favour the local over the global, the home-made over the mass-produced, and Melody Dog over Taylor Swift. After achieving a cult following on its hardback publication in 2022, it is now available in paperback for the first time. In 1840, eighty-two Americans were transported from Canada to a life of penal servitude half a world away in Van Diemen's Land, present-day Tasmania. Captured in a series of cross-border raids at Short Hills, St. Clair, Windsor, and Prescott following the 1837 rebellion against the colonial government in Upper Canada, these convicts were exiled in lieu of a death sentence.Gleaned from eleven first-person accounts, Cassandra Pybus and Hamish Maxwell-Stewart examine the largest body of interlocking convict narratives in existence. American Citizens, British Slaves is presented as one narrative into which the editors have woven their own extensive commentary. This work provides a vivid, intimate account of the lives of these American political prisoners within the penal system, their attempts to escape, and the ultimate prize of freedom as described by the survivors. The book also sets the Patriot narratives within the broader context of political unrest in the borderlands of America, as well as within the British Empire as a whole, during the 1830s. The narratives reveal the political and legal issues exposed in the use of transportation as a viable judicial tool.
