Lewis Carroll, Photographer is a book written by Helmut Gernsheim that explores the lesser-known aspect of Lewis Carroll's life as a photographer. Lewis Carroll, the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, is known for his literary works such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, but he was also an avid photographer. The book delves into Carroll's passion for photography, which began in the 1850s and continued until his death in 1898. Gernsheim provides a comprehensive overview of Carroll's photographic works, including his portraits of children, landscapes, and still life compositions. The book also sheds light on the technical aspects of Carroll's photography, including his use of the wet collodion process and his experimentation with different lenses and camera angles. The author also explores the relationship between Carroll's photography and his literary works, highlighting the influence of photography on his writing and vice versa. The book features numerous photographs taken by Carroll, as well as images of the photographer himself and his subjects. Overall, Lewis Carroll, Photographer is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the life and works of Lewis Carroll, photography, or the intersection of art and literature. It provides a unique perspective on the man behind Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and offers a glimpse into the world of Victorian photography. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. History, Frankish Identity and the Framing of Western Ethnicity, 550–850
This pioneering study explores early medieval Frankish identity as a window into the formation of a distinct Western conception of ethnicity. Focusing on the turbulent and varied history of Frankish identity in Merovingian and Carolingian historiography, it offers a new basis for comparing the history of collective and ethnic identity in the Christian West with other contexts, especially the Islamic and Byzantine worlds. The tremendous political success of the Frankish kingdoms provided the medieval West with fundamental political, religious and social structures, including a change from the Roman perspective on ethnicity as the quality of the 'Other' to the Carolingian perception that a variety of Christian peoples were chosen by God to reign over the former Roman provinces. Interpreting identity as an open-ended process, Helmut Reimitz explores the role of Frankish identity in the multiple efforts through which societies tried to find order in the rapidly changing post-Roman world.

For nearly a century, conventional historians have depicted Germany as a rabidly nationalist land, born in a sea of aggression, its nineteenth-century ascent accompanied by militarism and brought to a murderous apex in the Third Reich. Not so, asserts Helmut Walser Smith, who, beginning in 1500, reveals pacific conceptions of the nation and allows us to see the Nazis’ extreme form of nationalism not as the dark culmination point of German history but as an essential episode in Germany’s centuries-long history of continually conceiving the nation in radically different ways. Whether chronicling the Thirty Years War, the German Enlightenment, the Weimar Republic, the Holocaust or the era of Angela Merkel, Smith has created a new standard for the twenty-first-century.

Who are you if you have lived half your life in one culture and the other half in another? This is the question that Helmut (Tom) Mueller dealt with, often feeling caught between the two cultures. In his memoir, Between Two Chairs, Tom details his life from coming of age in Nazi Germany to a successful life in the United States. This is his story. Born into an affluent family in Brandenburg, Germany in 1925, Tom became fascinated with flying in his youth and eventually joined the Luftwaffe where he saw action as a fighter pilot during WWII. At war's end, he surrendered to the American forces, but was turned over to the Russians the next day. His escape, the search for family, and the attempt to create a normal life dominated the decade after the war. Then came an opportunity to pursue the American Dream where Tom learned to appreciate the values of his new country. In the end, who was he? Helmut the German or Tom the American?

‘In the tenth-century Annales Cambriae, which possibly goes back to contemporary sources, the entry about the Battle of Badon Hill mentions that Arthur “carried the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ on his shoulders for three days and three nights”. It is likely that this Latin quote is based upon a Welsh source, in which the words for “shoulder” (ysqwyd) and “shield” (ysqwyt) were close enough in spelling to get mixed up quite easily.’ Arthur’s Miscellany is full of such insights, based upon a lifetime study of heraldry and armour. These essays were written over a period of more than 30 years, some never published before now. Chapters include: ‘The Arms of Lancelot du Lac’; ‘Why Was the Green Knight Green?’; and ‘Merlin, Magic, and Swords of Power’. Alongside his career as an historian and museum curator, Helmut Nickel was a famous illustrator. Few historians would be confident enough to interpret the symbology of the mid-15th century armorial, Les Noms, Armes, et Blazons des Chevalliers et Compaignons de la Table Ronde - all 175 of them! Many of the illustrations within are by the author. This is an important contribution to the Arthurian canon - and a tribute to a great scholar and artist from his friends and fellow researchers.

Hitler's Secret Commandos is the history of the K-Verband naval commando unit, established in 1943 to reek havoc amongst invading allied forces involved in amphibious landings or actions, against German-occupied coasts. Following the Italian and British example, the basic idea was for a small, exceptionally well-trained and absolutely reliable commando force using the maximum element of surprise. Midget U-boats, and small torpedo-carrying craft along the lines of the "explosive boats" used by the Italian Navy, were designed for individual operations while a naval assault troop was formed for missions against important enemy operational targets near the sea after being landed from naval vessels offshore. Using German archive material, first-hand accounts and other published material this is the first comprehensive history of the K-Verband. It charts the development, structure, selection, training and equipment the Commando unit used together with a detailed narrative of the operations undertaken. The material has been translated from a German text, previously published in Germany with wide acclaim.
Analog Design Centering and Sizing

Analog Design Centering and Sizing

This book represents a compendium of fundamental problem formulations of analog design centering and sizing. It provides a differentiated knowledge about the tasks of analog design centering and sizing. In particular the wor- case problem will be formulated. It stands at the interface between process technology and design technology. This book wants to point out that and how both process and design technology are required for its solution. Algorithms based on the presented material are for instance available in the EDA tool WiCkeD [88]. The intention is to enable analog and mixed-signal designers to assess CAD solution methods that are presented to them. On the other side, the intention is to enable developers of analog CAD tools to formulate and develop solution approaches for analog design centering and sizing. The structure of the book is geared towards a combination of a reference book and a textbook. The presentation goes from general topics to the more speci?c details, preceding material is usually a prerequisite for succeeding material. The formulations of tasks and solution approaches by mathematical means makes the book suitable as well for students dealing with analog design and design methodology. The contents is structured as follows: Chapter1sketchestheroleofanalogcircuitsandanalogdesigninintegrated circuits. Anoverviewofanalogsizingtasksandthecorrespondingterminology is introduced. Chapter 2 illustrates analog sizing and yield optimization/design centering with the simplest example of an RC circuit. Chapter 3 describes the basic input and output quantities of analog sizing.
Monograph of the Amphisiellidae and Trachelostylidae (Ciliophora, Hypotricha)
The present book is a monograph about two groups of hypotrichous ciliates, namely the Amphisiellidae and the Trachelostylidae. It is the third of six volumes which - view the Hypotricha, one of the three major taxa of the spirotrichs. The first volume is about the Oxytrichidae, a rather large group, many species of which have 18 highly characteristically arranged frontal-ventral-transverse cirri and, much more importantly, a comparatively complex dorsal ciliature due to (oxytrichid) fragmen- tion of dorsal kineties during cell division (Berger 1999). The second volume deals with the Urostyloidea, which are characterised by a zigzag-arrangement of the ventral cirri (Berger 2006). Although this pattern is often very impressive, it is a relatively simple feature originating by a more or less distinct increase of the number of frontal-ventral-transverse cirri anlagen. These anlagen produce cirral pairs which are serially arranged in non-dividing specimens. Some - ers are likely astonished that the monograph on urostyloids does not include Urol- tus, a group of tailed species, which also have a distinct zigzagging cirral pattern. However, morphological and molecular data indicate that the zigzag pattern of U- leptus evolved independently, that is, convergently to that of the urostyloids. Thus, Uroleptus was excluded from the urostyloid review. A zigzag pattern is also known from some oxytrichids, for example, Neokeronopsis, Territricha, Pattersoniella, showing that this pattern evolved several times independently (Berger 1999, 2006, Foissner et al. 2004).
