Dying to Die - The Janet Adkins Story, is the biography of a loving wife and mother who took control of her life, her death and her destiny. It is a gripping love story between two people and their mutual respect for one another's journey. Janet Adkins, an unknown woman from Portland, Oregon, was diagnosed with early Alzheimer's disease. She and her husband became internationally known when she elected to be the first, and only person to end her life with the help of Dr. Jack Kevvorkian using his controversial "suicide machine."Nearly thirty years after Janet's death, intimate details of her life and choice to die are revealed, with reactions of her family, friends, and community. At the conclusion of the book, the reader is left with compelling food for thought that encourages them to consider the evidence and ponder the questions: Do people have the right to decide when and how to die? Should their doctor be allowed to assist them? Should they be allowed the freedom to make a deliberate choice? The path that Janet chose is not the path for everyone. We as individuals with the diverse backgrounds of social and religious beliefs will encounter many paths during our lifetimes. Would you like to have the freedom to choose the path that rings true for you?

Traveling by plane can be a stressful experience for anxious children (and their parents!) Prepare children for the unfamiliar sights and sounds of the airport experience in advance with this fun and gently humorous picture book. Children will join Janet as she learns what to expect at each stage of a plane journey - from packing and getting ready to leave home, to traveling to the airport, checking in, going through security, boarding the plane, taking off, turbulence, using the on-board bathroom, landing, and baggage reclaim. Particular emphasis is placed on coping with sensory issues, and the book provides many welcome ideas for distractions and suggestions for activities to relieve boredom during the flight. It closes with a useful list of practical hints and tips for parents and caregivers. With bright and cheerful illustrations, and a timeline on each page allowing children to keep track of where they are on their journey, this book will be an enjoyable read for children aged 3 to 12, and will be especially useful for those on the autism spectrum.
Through the Lens of Janet Stone

Janet Stone’s photograph albums feature informal portraits from the mid-twentieth century of many of the leading cultural figures and personalities of the day. The wife of the distinguished engraver Reynolds Stone established a kind of literary salon in the idyllic setting of the Old Rectory at Litton Cheney in West Dorset. Here their wide circle of friends could visit, work and flourish as Janet photographed them. Included between these pages are portraits of Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears, John Piper, Iris Murdoch, John Bayley, C. Day-Lewis, Jill Balcon, Kenneth Clark, Freya Stark, Siegfried Sassoon, Willa Muir, Sylvia Townsend Warner and Frances Partridge as well as Janet’s husband Reynolds and her family. Although not a technical photographer, Janet instinctively knew the best moment to click the shutter, thus often capturing her subjects off-guard and at their most informal. In this way we see picnics by the tennis court, John Bayley trying on a headscarf, or a young Daniel Day-Lewis dressed up as a knight. Others are portrayed reading or relaxing in the gardens, drink in hand. These unique portraits give a beguiling insight into a special set of circumstances: an idyllic place and time and a group of people drawn together by two contrasting but complimentary personalities, the shy genius of Reynolds and the outgoing style and glamour of Janet Stone.

'Who Killed Janet Smith?' examines one of the most infamous and still unsolved murder cases in Canadian History: the 1924 murder of twenty-two-year-old Scottish nursemaid Janet Smith. Originally published in 1984, and out of print for over a decade, this tale of intrigue, racism, privilege, and corruption in high places as a true-crime recreation that reads like a complex thriller. We are pleased to be reissuing this title as part of the City of Vancouver's Legacy Book Project. "... drug traffic, Roaring Twenties hedonism, official corruption, cutthroat competition among newspapers, a public taste for occultism, etc.- and entrust the whole works to a good storyteller, and you have one terrific political history of Vancouver." - Geist Magazine "Starkins cuts away at the layers with the delicacy of a neurosurgeon. What he uncovers almost defies belief." - Quill & Quire

Scotland-born, London-based artist Caroline Walker is celebrated for her paintings exploring the lives of women, from those living luxury lifestyles to those fleeing oppression. In this publication, which was produced to accompany Walker’s first exhibition with Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh, in autumn 2020, the artist turns her attention closer to home, presenting a series of paintings in which the focus is the artist’s own mother, Janet, as she goes about her daily tasks: cooking, cleaning, tidying and tending the garden of the Fife home where the artist spent her childhood. The publication features a newly commissioned essay and an interview with the artist by critic and author Hettie Judah. The essay opens by comparing Walker’s works to the Dutch Golden Age, encouraging consideration of everyday domestic scenes. Judah then leads the reader through Walker’s latest series of works, exploring the daily routines and household chores that have filled Walker’s mother’s days for the past forty years, along with the artist’s treatment of these activities. Judah deftly locates this latest body of work within Walker’s wider practice, opening up discussion of women at work in different industries and notions of invisibility. She asserts: ‘While "Janet" extends Walker’s long-held interest in women’s work, the series is also a loving undertaking. The artist offers us her mother with great pride, both in particular, and on behalf of other mothers overlooked and working out of sight.’ The interview offers further insight into Walker’s thoughts in relation to the "Janet" series, and to the working processes behind it.The publication features around eighty illustrations of the preparatory studies and paintings that comprise this new body of work. It has been designed by Joanna Deans, Identity, with photography by Peter Mallet. The publication was produced by Ingleby, Edinburgh, and printed by Die Keure, Bruges. It was co-published in 2020 by Ingleby and Anomie Publishing, London, in an edition of 1500 copies.Caroline Walker was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, in 1982. She attended Glasgow School of Art from 2000-04, before completing her MA at the Royal College of Art in 2009. Recent and forthcoming exhibitions include Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, the Midlands Arts Centre (MAC), Birmingham, and participation in the ninth edition of the British Art Show. She is represented in a number of public collections including the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, the UK Government Art Collection, London, Kistefos Museum, Jevnaker, Norway, and Museum Voorlinden & Kunstmuseum den Haag, in the Netherlands.Hettie Judah is chief art critic of the British daily newspaper The i, a regular contributor to The Guardian, The New York Times, Frieze, Art Quarterly, Numéro Art and The Art Newspaper, and a contributing editor to The Plant. Recent publications include a short biography of Frida Kahlo (Laurence King, 2020) and Art London (ACC Art Books, 2019).
An Analysis of Janet L. Abu-Lughod's Before European Hegemony
The modern vision of the world as one dominated by one or more superpowers begs the question of how best to understand the world-system that existed before the rise of the first modern powers. Janet Abu-Lughod's solution to this problem, in this highly influential work, is that Before European Hegemony, a predominantly insular, agrarian world was dominated by groups of mercantile city-states that traded with one another on equal terms across a series of interlocking areas of influence. In this reading of history, China and Japan, the kingdoms of India, Muslim caliphates, the Byzantine Empire and European maritime republics alike enjoyed no absolute dominance over their neighbours and commercial partners – and the egalitarian international trading network that they built endured until European advances in weaponry and ship types introduced radical instability to the system. Abu-Lughod's portrait of a more balanced world is a masterpiece of synthesis driven by one highly creative idea: her world system of interlocking spheres of influence quite literally connected masses of evidence together in new ways. A triumph of fine critical thinking.
John (1754-1795) and Janet (Ballingall) (1740- ) Pratt: The Tenants of Downfield, Kettle Parish, Fife: By Her Fifth Great Nephew
Janet Ballingall was the daughter of the long-time tenant farmer of Rameldry, Kettle Parish, George Ballingall (1714-1793). She spent her childhood at Rameldry until her marriage to John Pratt also of Kettle Parish. Pratt was a tenant farmer of nearby Downfield. They would marry in 1776 and have six children who were all born and raised at Downfield. John Pratt held tenancy over Downfield for a 19-year term until his death in 1795. This then is the narrative of the life and times of John and Janet Pratt, the tenants of Downfield, Kettle Parish.
