When Jake Rollins isn't worrying about his dad going ape-shit, he's busy creating out-of- this-world manga and hanging out with his best mate. Jake and his mum spend their lives dodging Jake's dad's fists, but it's the last year of high school and Jake has the perfect plan to escape home. All he has to do is nab a scholarship to Tokyo where he'll learn how to be a professional manga artist. But before then, Jake has to navigate his final year of high school, and keep himself, his mum and their dog alive. Baba Ami may look like an ordinary Australian Terrier but she's more like Jake's spiritual guide. She's got tons of wisdom, plus she talks, but the only person who can hear her is Jake. She's not the only surprising thing about Jake's life - his anime hero, Takehiko sometimes inexplicably comes to life. He's Jake's role model for friendship, bravery and being true to yourself. And let's face it, Jake needs all the help he can get when he ends up complicating his life by kissing his best friend, Phee and getting in with Clay Perez, the local graffiti artist who is always in trouble with the police. Jake's life takes a turn for the worst when he's arrested after Clay Perez dobs him in. When his dad throws him out of the house, he ends up being a homeless teenager with nowhere to go. Thank goodness for best friends. Life gets even more complicated when Jake's portrait of his dad ends up in the local paper. It will be a miracle if they don't all end up dead like Jake's little sister, Katie. This is a story of survival, resurgence, and what it means to be bigger than where you come from. With themes of friendship, coming-of-age, family abuse, survival, creativity, courage and diversity, Can the Real JR Stand Up, Please? is a warm-hearted hopeful story about being true to yourself and learning to be brave.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a man of destiny. Abraham Lincoln gave the blacks their freedom in America, King was to lead them to social justice. His association with white men as he matured changed from hatred to dislike to acceptance to friendship. This was his social preparation for his role; his studies in Theology and Philosophy were his intellectual and spiritual preparation. This book is a fascinating account of the inter-relationship of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the teachings and philosophies of the Church. While there are many books on, Dr. King, and while it would be impossible to write about him without studying these factors, the specific examination that Rev. Rahming covers lends a unique aspect not found in many books of much greater length. Perhaps one of the most significant aspects of this book is the way in which the author details how King saw the Church in regards to his civil rights mission and how his vision of the Church altered as his work progressed. This book makes fine supplementary reading material in Social Studies, Social Work, Political Science, Religion, Sociology, Black Studies and will serve pastors who deal with similar moral issues.
What Makes Sammy Jr. Run?
"You want to see me driving up and down the Sunset Strip in my car picking up girls, right? Well, you don't think I'd be stupid enough to let you see that side of me, do you?"-actor Warren Beatty, Esquire 1967 For more than a hundred years, we've made celebrity worship a national pastime. Celebrities charm us with their beauty, ability, and fame; we want to know everything about them. Today, for the most part, celebrities control their own media. They communicate directly with the world on X and Instagram. They produce documentaries or docuseries or write their own books. But during the 1960s and 1970s, things were different. The press controlled the publicity. Writers employed by magazines had the freedom to publish nuanced, intimate, and occasionally revealing stories. What Makes Sammy Jr. Run? is a textbook/anthology of 19 literary, lively, and deeply reported stories that are both entertaining and historically intriguing, sourced from many of the great magazines and newspapers of the era - including Esquire, Harper's, Playboy, LIFE, The Washington Post, New York, Sport, and Cosmopolitan. Each story includes a biography or interview with the author and a postscript that adds context. Read Doon Arbus on soul pioneer James Brown, Sara Davidson on pulp goddess Jacqueline Suzanne, Robert Ward on baseball superstar Reggie Jackson, Nora Ephron on feminist Helen Gurley Brown, Anne Taylor Fleming on the benighted and controversial writer Truman Capote, Sally Quinn on ballet's Rudolf Nureyev, Jacqueline Trescott on disco's Donna Summer, Helen Dudar on cinema beauty Lauren Bacall, Rex Reed on Ava Gardner, and more. As it turned out, some of the writers in this anthology became celebrities in their own right-though admired by a smaller and more particular following. Employing a range of styles and reporting techniques, all put us in the room with entertainers and artists who are grappling, in some way or another, with fame - what it means to have it, sustain it, and lose it.

This is a story, buried in the archives of the past, about a young, unfledged teenager, John Graham Jr., who dreamt of becoming a digger on the Panama Canal like his father and who romanticized the experience as "the moving of mountains and the braving of swamps and jungles." To him it was going to be the greatest adventure that he looked forward to. When, in the year 1910, his father sent for him to come to Panama to join him, his dream came true, but not in the way that he had expected. In a period of only five short years after leaving home, his once untarnished and unblemished life was so deeply and so remarkably transformed that even his aunts Beulah and Sarah could not recognize him when he returned to Jamaica.
