The Epistle of Jude is a powerful text which reminds Christians that there will always be false teachers around who do not teach the true Gospel. These false teachers show up in a variety of settings and even in the church. Jude encourages Christians to consistently build up their faith through the study of Scripture, consistent prayer, regular worship and radical obedience to the Great Commandments of Jesus. As we stay close to God through Scripture, prayer, worship and loving God and all others, we grow in sanctifying grace and become holier and stronger disciples of Jesus. Being built up in righteousness, Jude assures us that we will recognize false teachers very easily, and we will not be led astray by their teachings. As the true Gospel is reflected in our lives and ministries, our light shines in this world and the lost are drawn to Christ as they look and see that his kingdom is coming in our hearts, lives, and ministries. In this, God is glorified, and the lost are found. And, false teachers who promote selfish and sinful versions of Christian doctrines are exposed and defeated.

The chapters in this book were first taught many years ago in the Fresno School of Mission course at our church. The outline and lecture notes from that verse by verse study were converted into this book. This is a devotional study and commentary on all twenty-five verses of Jude. My purpose was to make technical Greek words and phrases understandable to all Christian believers. I also wanted to give practical applications and real-life stories that are often missing from scholarly commentaries. We start out in Jude 1-4 to see how the Lord empowers us to live a godly life and contend for the faith. In Jude 5-7, we look at the three great judgments on Israel, the angels who sinned, and the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jude 8-11 gives us keen discernment on false teachers. They are like Cain, Balaam, and Korah. Verses 12-19 give us further insights into the apostates and God's judgment of them. Both Enoch and the apostles have already predicted their arrival. Finally, in Jude 20-25, we see how Christians can avoid apostasy and rescue others from it. Ultimately, it is God who keeps us from falling away. To Him be all the glory.

1 Peter addresses Christians who have known suffering and persecution to a degree that we will never know. In 2 Peter, Peter was very concerned that those who deny Christ's return should be withstood and that the church could be confident that Christ has not abandoned them. The theme of Jude is similar and also points Christians towards the evidence of believers who heard Jesus speak, to enable them 'to fight on for the faith which once and for all God has given to his people'.

I'll never grow up. Sometimes we feel a little like Peter Pan. We'd rather be children, free of obligations and responsibilities. Sometimes we even feel that way about our Christian lives. The writers of Peter & Jude understand how difficult it is to grow into maturity. But they show us how God provides direction and comfort when we travel dark roads, and show us what it takes to be mature in Christ. This revised edition features questions for starting group discussions and for meeting God in personal reflection, as well as a 'now or later' section in each study.
The Apostle Jude's Tripod: A Survey of the Man, Method and Message of the New Testament's Forgotten Book
The apostle Jude's little letter can easily be read within five minutes, yet it spans eternity past and future, history and prophecy, blessing and judgment, past revelation and fresh revelation, things known and not known, heaven's glory and hell's grief. And, like all Scripture, it has a God-given relevance for us in the present day: * for reproof - showing when we are off track * for correction - helping us to get back on track* for instruction - enabling us to keep on track. As Jude wrote his little book, it's as if he did so with the mindset of a surveyor, scanning the worrying spiritual landscape in front of him - 19 times in his short letter, Jude moves his surveyor's 'tripod' of threes to drive his point home. In addition to exploring each of these, Bible teacher Andy McIlree unpacks each verse across seven key themes of Salutation, Salvation, Contention, Condemnation, Revelation, Benediction and Doxology. This is a very enlightening and practical study of a little understood, under-appreciated and often forgotten part of our New Testament."There is inescapable evidence, and no room for doubt, that a great work of God was done in the hearts of Mary and Joseph's four sons - James, Joses, Simon, and Judas - during the forty days between Calvary and being included in the one hundred and twenty who gathered in Acts 1:14-15 to wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit. How and when the change took place, we don't know, but change they most certainly did. Perhaps, somewhere in the darkness of Calvary's cross, they felt their own darkness; perhaps, during the earthquake, they also were shaken; and perhaps, when the tombs were opened, they began to sense their own spiritual awakening. What we do know is that the Lord Jesus Christ was seen after His resurrection "by Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once" and "After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles." The exalted Christ had come into their lives in a wonderful fulfilment of the ark's covenant blessing. There was no familiarity in his opening remark. He could easily have said, "Jude, a brother of Jesus Christ and bondservant with James," but, like James in his letter, he owned the Lordship of the One they formerly spoke against and their transformation as servants of the King. James called Him "our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory"21 - or, more accurately by removing the words in italics, "our Lord Jesus Christ of the glory." By saying this, James was not only convinced of the glory of the place from which his Saviour had come, and to which He had returned, he was thinking of the glory of the Person and of how that glory should radiate through "the faith" that we hold. It was this that Jude made his aim by describing his servanthood with the Greek word doulos ... the Spirit of God attached the word doulos to Jude to speak of one who is tied to the task like a slave and not loosed without his master's permission." The Second Letter of Peter and the Letter of Jude both address false teaching - teaching that affects behaviour. The recipients had within their midst people whose lives contradicted the gospel that was preached. They defiled the love-feasts; they were themselves immoral and minimized the importance of law in the Christian life. They scoffed at the parousia and were fond of their own rhetoric. Michael Green offers a penetrating analysis that sets both letters in their historical context and shows their relevance to life today.

The miracle of being forgiven is perhaps equaled only by the wonder of also being trusted again. That wondrous experience in the life of Simon Peter ultimately produced remarkable letters, full of warning and hope, solemn instruction and glorious promise. Because of that grace in Peter's past, his words in the book of 2 Peter are able to strengthen we who are his brothers and sisters in faith. Jude follows 2 Peter, yet because of its brevity and difficult message it is one of the most neglected books of Scripture. Still, it too reflects God's redemptive story and offers important insight for God's people. In this volume, Robert Harvey and Philip H. Towner delve into 2 Peter and Jude, exploring issues of authorship, canonicity, purpose and themes and ultimately showing how they relate to the life of the church.

These two small texts have often been outshone by other New Testament writings and have sometimes been regarded as of scant importance. Neither of them is easy to understand. Their language is sometimes difficult and the symbolism and biblical allusions are obscure to readers who do not know Jewish apocalyptic literature. Knight demonstrates that they do, however, repay careful study. They reveal a thought-world that is dominated by meditation on biblical literature, and they show how such material was interpreted to deal with problems in the life of certain unknown churches in the first century CE.

How can Christians retain their holiness when under threat? How can we build godly lives when bombarded by dubious teaching? How can we persevere when surrounded by charlatans? The letters of Peter and Jude show Christians - then as well as now - how, despite adversity, we can be strong, firm and steadfast.

THOMAS HARDY'S JUDE THE OBSCURE A study of Jude the Obscure using contemporary feminist and literary theory. Illustrated, with notes and a bibiography. Jude the Obscure (1895), Thomas Hardy's last novel, is a sister (or brother) book to Tess of the d'Urbervilles, before he turned to poetry and other forms of writing. The author attacks similar targets: the family, politics, religion, marriage, education and sexuality. Hardy was on fire when he wrote Jude the Obscure - it is a very angry work. Jude the Obscure, though, contains far more polemic and philosophizing than Tess or any of the earlier novels. The preaching and polemic threatens to undo the narrative, which is nevertheless 'realist', like other Thomas Hardy fictions. In Jude the Obscure, Hardy was stretching the novel to the limit, testing the boundaries of what is 'acceptable'. In Jude the Obscure, the things that say 'you shan't' are, variously, God, religion, education, circumstance, chance, nature, and marriage. All of the institutions and 'causes' reside inside the individual, which is what makes the problems they create so difficult to deal with for Sue and Jude. Patriarchy, culture and society are not in some 'out there' space, but in people. Hardy's thoughts on Jude the Obscure, as expressed in the Life and letters, include his desire for a novel about characters 'into whose souls the iron has entered'; a desire to make the story 'grimy' in order to heighten the contrast between the ideal life and the 'squalid real life'; the novel 'makes for morality', Hardy said; and ended up 'a mass of imperfections', a remark many artists have made of their work.
