American street photographer Leon Levinstein is much admired within the photographic community, but little known outside of it. Solo exhibitions at the National Gallery of Canada in 1995 and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2010 brought him to the attention of many, but his dynamic and original work is yet to achieve the recognition it deserves. Levinstein's fearless and unsentimental black-and-white images, whether shot in New York City, Coney Island, Haiti, Mexico or India, possess, in Metropolitan Museum of Arts Curator of Photographs, Jeff Rosenheim's words, "graphic virtuosity-seen in raw, expressive gestures and seemingly monumental bodies-balanced by an unusual compassion for his off-beat subjects." In 1975, at the age of 65, Levinstein received a grant from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. His intention, in his own words, was to photograph "as wide a spectrum of the American scene as my experience and vision will allow." This long-awaited book fulfils this ambitious goal.

Leon Löwentraut is celebrated in the art scene as an exceptional talent. He has been conquering the art world since his earliest youth. With dynamic forms and expressive colors, the 24-year-old Löwentraut creates works of art that sell out within days at international exhibitions. The first comprehensive monograph on his life's work, shows on 320 pages his works with about 220 color photographs. The impressively large format of 29 cm wide and 37 cm high creates the space to explore the many details in Löwentraut's paintings. The illustrated book is colourful and lively, with a velvet cover in magenta on the outside and the preprinted pages on the inside glowing orange, making it 100 percent Löwentraut! That is the first impression one has when opening the book. The great energy of Löwentraut's art has been captured in the production and content of the monograph. But the illustrated book can do much more: it offers the reader a deep insight into Löwentraut's work and also addresses the question of what drives the young artist and who influenced him. How does it feel to be an artist in our digital age, and what place does classically created art have in a global world dominated by the Internet and social media? The illustrated book itself already has one possible approach to bringing this discrepancy together. Using the teNeues app and your smartphone camera, you can access exclusive video footage of Leon's work on twelve appropriately marked pages. Those who scan the pages are presented with sequences in the studio, conversations about art and the art world, selected exhibition moments, and impressions from the production of the book. Text in English and German.
