Lana and Lilly Wachowski

Lana and Lilly Wachowski

Lana and Lilly Wachowski have redefined the technically and topically possible while joyfully defying audience expectations. Visionary films like The Matrix trilogy and Cloud Atlas have made them the world's most influential transgender media producers, and their coming out retroactively put trans* aesthetics at the very center of popular American culture. Cáel M. Keegan views the Wachowskis' films as an approach to trans* experience that maps a transgender journey and the promise we might learn "to sense beyond the limits of the given world." Keegan reveals how the filmmakers take up the relationship between identity and coding (be it computers or genes), inheritance and belonging, and how transgender becoming connects to a utopian vision of a post-racial order. Along the way, he theorizes a trans* aesthetic that explores the plasticity of cinema to create new social worlds, new temporalities, and new sensory inputs and outputs. Film comes to disrupt, rearrange, and evolve the cinematic exchange with the senses in the same manner that trans* disrupts, rearranges, and evolves discrete genders and sexes.

The brightly colored, playful prints of Lilly Pulitzer's clothing were a staple of American fashion in the 1960s, '70s, and '80s--worn by members of society from Palm Beach to Nantucket, actresses, models, and stylish housewives. One could always spot a Lilly with its undeniable characteristics: clean, comfortable lines; bright and vivid colors; and the fantastical design of its fabrics. Whether at the beach or a cocktail party, these simple shifts for women and girls and jackets and trousers for the gents were a preppy rite of passage. The majority of Pulitzer's fabric designs from 1962 through 1985 were based on artwork by Key West-based artist Suzie Zuzek. These designs--monkeys sipping martinis, dancing flowers, colorful seashells, op-art geometrics--were all the rage and attracted the eye of such ladies as Jackie Kennedy, Happy Rockefeller, and Dina Merrill. This book--which is a treasure trove of the iconic prints and contextualizes the purely American label--is a must-have for the libraries of those who love fashion and social history.

A most rewarding novel for the reader, as the protagonist Lillian Lightwood struggles to find a successful place in life and win over adversity. Lilly has been a victim all her life. She has survived a Dickensian childhood in Scotland where she was treated as a slave by her grandmother, an abusive marriage in Australia, the loss of her children in a bitter divorce, and a disfiguring car accident. She fights back with the help of one of Sydney's leading psychiatrists, and a skilled plastic surgeon. Now, Lilly seems to have it all - an exciting relationship with the plastic surgeon, a fabulous job with one of Sydney's top art galleries. But manic gallery owner Eva Goldberg, an accusation of art theft, an ultimatum from the surgeon, and Lilly's determination to win back her children will show a side few have ever seen - the steely, assertive, successful woman. The Other Side of Lilly takes the reader through Lilly's fight to overcome the demons of the past, to finally be in a position, physically, emotionally, and financially to go into battle to reclaim her children.

Think The Great Gatsby meets Little Orphan Annie by way of Murder on the Orient Express. Chocolate for Lilly has 58,070 words and is complete. A sequel is planned. It's 1919 and women's lives are about to change but before Emmaline can figure out that future, she must find her sister that she never knew she had. Robert has just finished college studies and already has a sizeable portfolio noting his inventions. These childhood friends meet up at the perfect moment in time, and decide to help one another, setting off on an adventure only the spirited would undertake. Pretending to be married they board the train from New York City, and first up is the idyllic setting of their childhood summer homes in North Carolina. What they find in their secret pool alerts them to nearby bootleggers but they are on a journey to find her sister, that didn't perish in the burned out orphanage, and he to showcase his prized paper inventions to none other than Thomas Edison. A train strike doesn't stop them, a party at the Vanderbilt estate, a shootout nor two opposite coasts of business. They even meet an undercover Washington D.C. reporter, who delivers the chocolate for Lilly, willing to help them as he is after the hit men and their bosses. Her long lost sister, Lilly, gets out just in time on the east coast, and the couple, Robert and Emmaline, who are on the west coast share a first kiss while rowing out from the shores of Edison's winter retreat. In the end the two sisters, Emmaline and Lilly, are united with all the family present in North Carolina and Robert has partners to back his ventures. This may be a series going forward with the story of their inventions and hotel business in Florida.
