Education Reform in the American States is a timely evaluation of the accountability movement in American public education, culminating in the No Child Left Behind Act, federal legislation of 2002. The authors treat the current accountability movement, placing it in historical context and addressing the evolution in public education policymaking from the overwhelming emphasis on state and local discretion to increasing federal oversight and mandates related to federal funding. They provide case studies of the educational accountability movements in nine states and analyze the factors and forces which explain progress in achievement levels as measured on standardized tests and the states' prospects for meeting their NCLB targets. The book and the individual case studies acknowledge the merits of NCLB while exposing several significant flaws and unintended harmful consequences of the act, particularly its incentives for states to lower their standards in order to meet annual yearly progress targets and its threat to withdraw federal funds from districts with the highest percentage of disadvantaged students.The audience for this study includes local, state and federal education policy makers; administrators and instructors in schools of education and other teaching programs, educators; and the general public.

W artykule przedstawiono studium przypadku zdegradowanego obszaru w mikrozlewni strumienia gua da Veada w gminie Ourinhos/SP. W miejscu tym występuje erozja wodna w postaci wąwoz w i żleb w, wywolana urbanizacją i wynikającymi z niej degradującymi dzialaniami antropicznymi. Badanie ma zatem na celu zrozumienie przestrzenno-czasowej ewolucji procesu erozji i ocenę zmian wlaściwości fizycznych gleby w trakcie erozji. W tym celu postęp erozji wąwoz w i żleb w byl monitorowany przy każdym opadzie deszczu, a wskaźniki fizyczne i granulometryczne zostaly określone poprzez pobranie pr bek profili glebowych ze ścian erozyjnych. In diesem Beitrag wird eine Fallstudie ber ein degradiertes Gebiet im Wassereinzugsgebiet des Flusses gua da Veada in der Gemeinde Ourinhos/SP vorgestellt. Das Gebiet ist von Wassererosion in Form von Rinnen und Abflussrinnen betroffen, die durch die Verst dterung und die daraus resultierenden degradierenden anthropogenen Eingriffe ausgel st wurde. Ziel der Studie ist es daher, die r umlich-zeitliche Entwicklung des Erosionsprozesses zu verstehen und die Ver nderungen der physikalischen Eigenschaften des Bodens im Verlauf der Erosion zu bewerten. Zu diesem Zweck wurde das Fortschreiten der Rinnen und Gullys bei jedem Niederschlagsereignis berwacht, und es wurden physikalische und granulometrische Indizes durch die Entnahme von Bodenprofilen an den Erosionsw nden bestimmt. Unter Ber cksichtigung aller analysierten Aspekte f hrte das Fehlen einer angemessenen Stadtplanung zur Ver nderung der Landschaft, zur Verst rkung des Erosionsprozesses im Laufe der Zeit und zur Verschlammung des Flusses gua da Veada sowie zur v lligen Verschlechterung der physikalischen Eigenschaften des Bodens, wodurch die Nutzungsm glichkeiten in diesem Gebiet beeintr chtigt wurden.

Il presente lavoro propone un caso di studio dell'area degradata nel microbacino del torrente gua da Veada, nel comune di Ourinhos/SP. Il sito presenta fenomeni di erosione idrica sotto forma di calanchi e canaloni, innescati dall'urbanizzazione e dalla conseguente azione antropica degradante. Lo studio mira quindi a comprendere l'evoluzione spazio-temporale del processo erosivo e a valutare i cambiamenti delle propriet fisiche del suolo nel corso dell'erosione. A tal fine, l'avanzamento dei calanchi e dei canaloni stato monitorato a ogni evento pluviometrico e sono stati determinati indici fisici e granulometrici mediante il campionamento di profili di suolo dalle pareti di erosione. Quindi, considerando tutti gli aspetti analizzati, la mancanza di un'adeguata pianificazione urbanistica culminata nella modifica del paesaggio, nell'intensificazione del processo di erosione nel tempo e nell'insabbiamento del torrente gua da Veada, oltre che nella totale de-caratterizzazione delle propriet fisiche del suolo, compromettendo la capacit di utilizzo del territorio in quest'area.

This paper proposes a case study of a degraded area in the gua da Veada stream watershed, in the municipality of Ourinhos/SP. The site has water erosion in the form of gullies and gullies, triggered by urbanization and consequent degrading anthropic action. The study therefore aims to understand the spatio-temporal evolution of the erosion process and assess the changes in the soil's physical properties over the course of the erosion. To this end, the progress of the gullies and gullies was monitored every rainy season and physical and granulometric indices were determined by sampling soil profiles from the erosion walls. Thus, considering all the aspects analyzed, the lack of adequate urban planning culminated in the modification of the landscape, the intensification of the erosion process over time and the silting up of the gua da Veada stream, in addition to the total de-characterization of the soil's physical properties, compromising the capacity for land use in this area.

The goal of this book is to summarise the recent advances in carbon nanotubes as a new material for electrochemical sensors. Since their discovery in 1991, carbon nanotubes have received considerable attention in different fields. Their special geometry and unique electronic, mechanical, chemical and thermal properties make them a very attractive material for the design of electrochemical biosensors. The first application of carbon nanotubes in the preparation of a sensor was reported by Britto in 1996. Since then, an increasing number of publications involving sensors based on carbon nanotubes (either single or multi-wall) for substrates like glucose, lactate, alcohols, phenols, neurotransmitters, aminoacids, proteins, carbohydrates among others, have been reported. This fact demonstrates the usefulness of carbon nanotubes for the development of electrochemical sensors. The advantages of carbon nanotubes for promoting electron transfer reactions -with special emphasis in those involving biomolecules, the different methodologies for incorporating carbon nanotubes in sensors (either suspended in solutions, in polymeric films or in composite matrices), the analytical performance of the resulting biosensors as well as future prospects are discussed in this book.
