Drawing upon a rich variety of life experiences and an eclectic academic background, Mr. Nordmoe has written a collection of short essays that offers a unique perspective on education, culture, work, character, and life as we know it in this present age. Compiled and reprinted upon demand, these essays stem from weekly newsletters published while the author was the head administrator of River's Edge Christian Academy for ten years while in his sixties.Aware of the tendency of our times towards chronological snobbery, he willingly has accepted the appellation of "ancient" from some members of his younger staff and gladly speaks from a vantage point of maturity and years. His lifelong inspiration derived from a large scriptural print hanging in his high school study hall; wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom (Proverbs 4:7).

This book deals with the lives of several women who have been connected for almost fifty years, first as members of a religious community together, then as friends after most of them left the convent. The first part focuses on the author's childhood and teenage years, while the remainder concentrates on the years she lived in a small community of six women who were all members of the Religious Sisters of Mercy, under the auspices of the Province of Cincinnati. Many changes occurred in their lives over the six or so years they lived in this community. Most of them were teachers, one a librarian. They made many friends with the people they encountered in what was primarily an African American population. Their neighbors were nothing if not gracious and welcoming. They learned many things about themselves as they struggled together and attempted to deal with various issues they had grown up with, including sexual abuse, alcoholism, and depression. At one point in their community life, they all attended therapy, both individually and as a group, hoping to learn how to better communicate with each other. They enjoyed good times and endured some hard times. They formed a group to study feminism, and other women they knew joined this group. It proved to be an eye-opening time.

Think Maggie Nelson meets Hannah Gadsby.Told in kaleidoscopic bursts of erratic recollections, daydreams, poetry, and lists, Mercy Gene is the powerful, genre-smashing debut work of auto-fiction by acclaimed writer, playwright, and comedian JD Derbyshire. Inspired by Derbyshire's critically acclaimed and award-winning stage play, Certified, and anchored by protagonist Janice/Jan/JD, Mercy Gene is a beautiful, humorous, and sometimes brutal look at queerness, gender confusion, institutionalization, addiction, and abuse. Through flashes of memory and imaginings, Derbyshire illustrates the intense and invisible "side effects" of psychiatric treatment and the unreliability of memory. In a stream-of-conscious narrative that provokes and consoles, eliciting tears and laughter at equal pace, Derbyshire re-examines a life of unspoken and repressed trauma. Between devastating bouts of depression, hilarious side-quests into the author's dryly sardonic inner monologue, helpless moments at the mercy of their own psyche, and tour-de-force appearances by fictional versions of Miriam Toews and the late, great Margot Kidder, Derbyshire leads readers through a non-linear narrative to treatment, forgiveness, and acceptance.
