The Shortstop From Kalamazoo: The Life and Times of Neil Berry

Neil Berry grew up on Walter Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan across the street from the city dump. The city filled in this dump when Berry was still young and in its place built the Upjohn Park athletic fields. This was a fortunate turn of events for Neil who was able to start watching and admiring the older boys who played on those fields. As he grew into a young man, he was able to spend many hours practicing in these fields. By the late 1930s Neil was a sports sensation playing left halfback in football for Kalamazoo Central High School and shortstop for the American Legion and Sutherland Paper Co. baseball teams. After a year at Western State Teachers College (now Western Michigan University) on a sports scholarship, Neil signed with the Detroit Tigers. He played one season of minor league ball before volunteering to serve his country in World War II. After the war and two seasons of AAA ball, Neil Berry made it to the majors. The Shortstop From Kalamazoo started the 1948 season as the Detroit Tigers starting shortstop.Neil Berry is not a household name even among the most ardent Detroit Tiger fans but Neil played with or against many of the greatest players in the game; Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson, Yogi Berra, Ted Williams, Bob Feller, Hal Newhouser, and Don Larsen, to name a few.Through the ups and downs of his seven year Major League Baseball career, Neil Berry witnessed from the bench or the playing field many unique or one time events in the history of the sport. Neil was playing shortstop when the shortest player in the history of the Major Leagues, Eddie Gaedel, made the only plate appearance of his short (pun intended) career. Neil witnessed a teammate throw a no hitter in his first major league start and another teammate set a record with 12 consecutive hits. Neil's favorite game forced the first playoff game in the history of the American League.Neil and I met in October, 2013 and continued to meet almost every week until he passed away in August, 2016. He shared his stories with me and allowed me to record those stories for this book.Neil's wife Gloria had dutifully collected every word the press ever wrote about Neil and pasted those articles and pictures in three large scrapbooks. Those scrapbooks also allowed me to tell Neil's story from the perspective of the sportswriters of the time.

You know me as Bunny Ears. That's the only name I have known for a long time. My mission is to follow and protect the yellow-haired girl called Alice. She was the one who gave us freedom, who united us, who showed that those like me, the ones you call Biters, are not monsters to be feared or animals to be hunted down. We live together now, us and the humans, in a place you know as Wonderland. The name doesn't matter. All I know is that I finally have a place I can call home. I have fought many battles and suffered many scars, and as new enemies threaten Alice and my home, I will have to fight again. But now I must fight the toughest battle I have fought yet. The battle to remember who I once was. For you see, now I remember I was someone before I became Bunny Ears.I am Neil and this is my story.

On October 30, 1974, in Kinshasa, Zaire, at the virtual center of Africa, two boxers were paid five million dollars apiece to confront each other in an epic match. One was Muhammad Ali, who vowed to reclaim the championship he had lost. The other was George Foreman, who was as taciturn as Ali was voluble and who kept his hands in his pockets “the way a hunter lays his rifle back into its velvet case.” Observing them both was Norman Mailer, whose grasp of the titanic battle’s feints and stratagems—and sensitivity to their deeper symbolism—made his 1975 book The Fight a masterpiece of sportswriting. Whether analyzing the fighters’ moves, interpreting their characters, or weighing their competing claims on the African and American souls, Mailer was a commentator of unparalleled acumen—and surely one of the few intrepid enough to accompany Ali on a late-night run through the bush. Through The Fight he restores our tarnished notions of heroism to a blinding gleam, and establishes himself as a champion in his own right. Over four decades after its original publication, this edition of The Fight has been introduced and abridged by Mailer scholar J. Michael Lennon and illustrated for the first time with principal photography by the two men who captured Ali and Foreman in the ring and in private like no one else: Neil Leifer and Howard L. Bingham. Widely considered to be the greatest sports photographer of his generation, Neil Leifer’s vibrant color coverage dominates from ringside. It also serves as a living testimony to the pageantry, sheer physical power, and deep psychological interplay of the fighters, their camps, and their controversial host, Zaire’s President Mobutu Sese Seko. Behind the scenes, meanwhile, Howard Bingham was Ali’s constant companion, documenting his every move from the moment he stepped off the plane in Zaire, his daily training regime, right through to the dressing room tension as he prepared to face Foreman once and for all. Together with pictures from other photojournalists, reproductions of Mailer’s original manuscript pages, and additional visual documentation of the media frenzy surrounding the “Rumble in the Jungle,” the result is a dazzling tribute to The Champ and a vivid document of one of the most epic, adrenaline-laced events in sporting history.
