Nicholas Trevet's Commentary on the Psalms (1317-C.1321): A Publishing History
How did medieval authors publish their works in the age before print? This study seeks to achieve new insights into the publishing strategies of medieval authors by focusing on Nicholas Trevet, an English Dominican friar and Oxford master. Shortly after 1317, Trevet was commissioned by his provincial prior to write a literal commentary on the Psalter. He chose as his reference version the less commonly used Latin translation by Jerome from the Hebrew, and delivered his work before 1321/22. The first book-length examination of Trevet's commentary, this detailed study traces the ways in which the work was circulated by the author and his proxies. Through a combined analysis of codicological, textual, and historical features of the nine extant fourteenth-century manuscripts, this study identifies contemporary efforts to make Trevet's work available to readers within and without the Dominican Order, in England and on the Continent. Even during the author's lifetime the commentary was copied in Paris and reached readers in Avignon and likely in Naples.

British architect Nicholas Hawksmoor (approx.1661 - 1736) is recognized as one of the major contributors to the traditions of British and European architectural culture. Nevertheless, there is insufficient visual documentation and analysis of his work. Nicholas Hawksmoor: Seven Churches for London reconsiders his architecture in relation to urbanism. The publication focuses on a series of important London churches the architect designed during the early part of the eighteenth century. The key distinguishing features of these churches are their spires, each designed with different qualities and motifs. While Hawksmoor was inspired by the ancient history of architecture, his work was considered radical and contemporary in its day. Photographer Helene Binet was specially commissioned to document the various aspects of the seven remaining London churches. Her immaculate black and white photographs demonstrate the beauty of Hawksmoor's architecture with special attention to the variety of scales, sites, interiors, textures, and materials
Nicholas of Cusa and the Aristotelian Tradition
The volume focuses on the relation between Cusanus and Aristotle or the Aristotelian tradition. In recent years the attention on this topic has partially increased, but overall the scholarship results are still partial or provisional. The book thus aims at verifying more systematically how Aristotle and Aristotelianism have been received by Cusanus, in both their philosophical and theological implications, and how he approached the Aristotelian thought. In order to answer these questions, the papers are structured according to the traditional Aristotelian sciences and their reflection on Cusanus' thought. This allows to achieve some aspects of interest and originality: 1) the book provides a general, but systematic analysis of Aristotle's reception in Cusanus' thought, with some coherent results. 2) Also, it explores how a philosopher and theologian traditionally regarded as Neoplatonist approached Aristotle and his tradition (including Thomas Aquinas), what he accepted of it, what he rejected, and what he tried to overcome. 3) Finally, the volume verifies the attitude of a relevant Christian philosopher and theologian of the Humanistic age towards Aristotle.

In conventional modern criticism, Nicholas Rowe (1674-1718) has always been overlooked and underestimated. Today, he is remembered as the the first editor of Shakespeare plays and not the successful and popular dramatist who dominated and shaped the theatrical tradition of his era. Opposite stands George Lillo (1691-1739) who occupied a prominent and immortal place in the history of drama. This study attempts to restore Rowe's reputation and prove the undisputable dramatic debt, Lillo owes him. To that end the study falls into three parts, patriarchal, patriotic and Stoic tragedies. A close examination of the two dramatist's plays is conducted to prove Lillo's close emulation of Rowe's plays. The study should help to restore Rowe's dramatic reputation and grant him a well-deserved and overdue place in the history of British theatre. The book is especially useful to academics and students interested in the history of British theatre, particularly, the Restoration and eighteenth century period. It is also useful to anyone interested in drama and its moral role.

Nicholas Breton (1545/55-1626?) was one of the most prolific writers of the Early Modern period and left behind a vast œuvre that is, however, largely neglected today. Breton addresses instrumental questions of his time, especially those of man’s identity. This study concentrates on a selection of Breton’s political texts in which Breton contrasts the Self against the Other. These texts not only stigmatise the Other as the undesired, the unknown and the indecipherable, but also construct a patriotic and uniform English identity to be imitated by all Englishmen and Englishwomen: the English Self.
