A Primer For Daily Life

A Primer For Daily Life

Susan Willis

Routledge
1991
sidottu
The interacting components of everyday life - the weekly supermarket shopping trip, fast food, children's toys - are still largely unremarked by cultural theorists. Grounded in Marxist theory, and guided by feminism, Susan Willis's lucid and entertaining study of the consumer culture broadens the scope of cultural studies to introduce the notion of daily life, with the commodity at its centre. Willis pays particular attention to the influence of commodity fetishism on social relations. Her investigation includes the taken for granted phenomena of modern culture - Barbie dolls, plastic packaging, banana sticker logos and the aerobic workout.A Primer For Daily Life demonstrates that the trivial is crucial for our understanding of capitalist culture, and argues for the necessary development of a critical perspective on daily life.

A Primer on Heterodox Economics

A Primer on Heterodox Economics

Ingrid Rima

Routledge

sidottu
Ingrid Rima’s history of economic thought textbook, Development of Economic Analysis has introduced several generations of students to the philosophy behind the growth of economics as a discipline. The subject is notable for having spawned a number of competing schools of thought and although the free market orthodoxy of neoclassical economics has come to hold sway in recent times, there remain an array of critical undercurrents. In this new introduction to competing economic paradigms, Rima charts the development of these varying schools of thought, their current status, and future prospects. There is little doubt that the events of the second decade of the twentieth century – financial meltdown, the credit crunch and the sub prime crisis – have provided fertile ground for less orthodox ways of thinking. Hence, a range of methodologies – from Austrian to Feminist; from Post Keynesian to Institutionalist – have begun to make their presence felt again – and there has been a considerable heating up of the debates.Rima analyzes the current state of play and stresses the differences between the varying schools, as well as attempts to bring them together under the banner of pluralism.

A Primer of Multivariate Statistics

A Primer of Multivariate Statistics

Richard J. Harris

Psychology Press Ltd
2013
nidottu
Drawing upon more than 30 years of experience in working with statistics, Dr. Richard J. Harris has updated A Primer of Multivariate Statistics to provide a model of balance between how-to and why. This classic text covers multivariate techniques with a taste of latent variable approaches. Throughout the book there is a focus on the importance of describing and testing one's interpretations of the emergent variables that are produced by multivariate analysis. This edition retains its conversational writing style while focusing on classical techniques. The book gives the reader a feel for why one should consider diving into more detailed treatments of computer-modeling and latent-variable techniques, such as non-recursive path analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and hierarchical linear modeling. Throughout the book there is a focus on the importance of describing and testing one's interpretations of the emergent variables that are produced by multivariate analysis.

In discussing the elements that form personality, the author explains the pioneer thinker's ideas on defense mechanisms, the channeling of instinctual drives, and the role of sex in male and female maturation. Lucid, illuminating, and instructive, this is an important book for all who seek to understand human behavior, in themselves and others.
A Primer of Jungian Psychology

A Primer of Jungian Psychology

Calvin S. Hall; Nordby Vernon J.

New American Library
1999
pokkari
The contributions of Carl Jung to understanding of the human psyche are immense. Starting as Freud's most famous disciple, Jung soon broke away from his mentor to follow his own lines of investigation and discovery. Many of Jung's ideas are now considered fundamentals in the study of the mind, but other, more controversial theories dealing with the psychological relevance of alchemy, ESP, astrology, and occultism are only now being seriously examined. This condensation and summary of Jung's life and work by two eminent psychology professors is written with deep understanding and extraordinary clarity and, along with its companion volume, A Primer Of Jungian Psychology is essential reading for anyone interested in the hidden depths of the mind.

A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold (Peter L. Bernstein's Finance Classics)

A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold (Peter L. Bernstein's Finance Classics)

Peter L. Bernstein; Paul A. Volcker

John Wiley Sons Inc
2008
nidottu
One of the foremost financial writers of his generation, Peter Bernstein has the unique ability to synthesize intellectual history and economics with the theory and practice of investment management. Now, with classic titles such as Economist on Wall Street, A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold, and The Price of Prosperity—which have forewords by financial luminaries and new introductions by the author—you can enjoy some of the best of Bernstein in his earlier Wall Street days. With the proliferation of financial instruments, new areas of instability, and innovative capital market strategies, many economists and investors have lost sight of the fundamentals of the financial system—its strengths as well as its weaknesses. A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold takes you back to the beginning and sorts out all the pieces. Peter Bernstein skillfully addresses how and why commercial banks lend and invest, where money comes from, how it moves from hand to hand, and the critical role of interest rates. He explores the Federal Reserve System and the consequences of the Fed's actions on the overall economy. But this book is not just about the past. Bernstein's novel perspective on gold and the dollar is critical for today's decision makers, as he provides extensive views on the future of money, banking, and gold in the world economy. This illuminating story about the heart of our economic system is essential reading at a time when developments in finance are more important than ever.
A Primer on Experiments with Mixtures

John A. Cornell

John Wiley Sons Inc
2011
sidottu
The concise yet authoritative presentation of key techniques for basic mixtures experiments Inspired by the author's bestselling advanced book on the topic, A Primer on Experiments with Mixtures provides an introductory presentation of the key principles behind experimenting with mixtures. Outlining useful techniques through an applied approach with examples from real research situations, the book supplies a comprehensive discussion of how to design and set up basic mixture experiments, then analyze the data and draw inferences from results. Drawing from his extensive experience teaching the topic at various levels, the author presents the mixture experiments in an easy-to-follow manner that is void of unnecessary formulas and theory. Succinct presentations explore key methods and techniques for carrying out basic mixture experiments, including: Designs and models for exploring the entire simplex factor space, with coverage of simplex-lattice and simplex-centroid designs, canonical polynomials, the plotting of individual residuals, and axial designs Multiple constraints on the component proportions in the form of lower and/or upper bounds, introducing L-Pseudocomponents, multicomponent constraints, and multiple lattice designs for major and minor component classifications Techniques for analyzing mixture data such as model reduction and screening components, as well as additional topics such as measuring the leverage of certain design points Models containing ratios of the components, Cox's mixture polynomials, and the fitting of a slack variable model A review of least squares and the analysis of variance for fitting data Each chapter concludes with a summary and appendices with details on the technical aspects of the material. Throughout the book, exercise sets with selected answers allow readers to test their comprehension of the material, and References and Recommended Reading sections outline further resources for study of the presented topics. A Primer on Experiments with Mixtures is an excellent book for one-semester courses on mixture designs and can also serve as a supplement for design of experiments courses at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also a suitable reference for practitioners and researchers who have an interest in experiments with mixtures and would like to learn more about the related mixture designs and models.
A Primer in Data Reduction

A Primer in Data Reduction

Andrew S. C. Ehrenberg

John Wiley Sons Inc
1982
nidottu
This is an introductory text in statistics for those who are not specialists in the subject. It makes the subject more relevant for students who have to use statistics as part of their other studies. It avoids mathematics without oversimplifying, emphasizing numeracy and relevance. It not only describes traditional statistical methods but deals with their limitations and discusses alternatives. The approach derives from the Author's earlier successful book on Data Reduction adapted here for classroom use. It covers the basic topics of a statistics course: averages and measures of scatter, frequency distributions and probability, sampling and statistical inference, relationships (including correlation regression, lawlike relationships, and an introduction to multivariate methods), the communication of data, and the design and interpretation of scientific studies. A teachers' guide is available from the publishers. "Data Reduction is a very innovative different kind of basic statistical book. I believe our discipline and the disciplines of those whose students we teach would be much better off if we based our first and second courses on Ehrenberg's book rather than on any book of which I am aware." - Brian L. Joiner, review of Data Reduction, JASA, September 1982 "It is rare for a text-book, particularly an elementary one, to appeal to the established practitioner many of the tenets contained in this excellent, clear, short and readable work, make one regret it was not available sooner." - The Business Economist, Spring 1983 "If you have time to read just one book on basic statistics, The Primer should be it. - Chuck Chakrapani, PMRS Journal, Toronto, Nov. 1982
A Primer for Finite Elements in Elastic Structures
A thorough guide to the fundamentals—and how to use them—of finite element analysis for elastic structures For elastic structures, the finite element method is an invaluable tool which is used most effectively only when one understands completely each of its facets. A Primer for Finite Elements in Elastic Structures disassembles the entire finite element method for civil engineering students and professionals, detailing its supportive theory and its mathematical and structural underpinnings, in the context of elastic structures and the principle of virtual work. The book opens with a discussion of matrix algebra and algebraic equation systems to foster the basic skills required to successfully understand and use the finite element method. Key mathematical concepts outlined here are joined to pertinent concepts from mechanics and structural theory, with the method constructed in terms of one-dimensional truss and framework finite elements. The use of these one-dimensional elements in the early chapters promotes better understanding of the fundamentals. Subsequent chapters describe many two-dimensional structural finite elements in depth, including the geometry, mechanics, transformations, and mapping needed for them. Most chapters end with questions and problems which review the text material. Answers for many of these are at the end of the book. An appendix describes how to use MATLAB(r), a popular matrix-manipulation software platform necessary to perform the many matrix operations required for the finite element method, such as matrix addition, multiplication, inversion, partitioning, rearrangement, and assembly. As an added extra, the m-files discussed can be downloaded from the Wiley FTP server.
A Primer on Statistical Distributions

A Primer on Statistical Distributions

Narayanaswamy Balakrishnan; V. B. Nevzorov

John Wiley Sons Inc
2003
sidottu
Introducing the perfect, all-in-one primer on statistical distributions Statistical distributions, along with their properties and interrelationships, are a central part of advanced statistics. However, most statistics textbooks only devote a few chapters to basic statistical distributions–such as binomial, Poisson, exponential, and normal–and stop short of covering other important distributions geared toward upper-level statistics courses. That’s where A Primer on Statistical Distributions makes its mark. Specifically tailored to the introductory course on statistical distributions, this unmatched resource takes a more balanced, all-inclusive approach than similar texts. In page after page, you’ll find a valuable review of often-overlooked distributions, including geometric, negative binomial, hypergeometric, Pareto, beta, gamma, chi-square, logistic, Cauchy, Laplace, extreme value, multinomial, Dirichlet, and multivariate normal. A Primer on Statistical Distributions begins with an informative first chapter on preliminary notations, definitions, and the concepts that are necessary to work effectively with distributions. The basic topics covered in this introductory chapter include distribution types, generating functions, shape characteristics, entropy, random vectors, conditional distributions, and regressions. Subsequent chapters are divided into three parts: discrete distributions, continuous distributions, and multivariate distributions. Each chapter includes many skill-building exercises that provide a helpful review of the material just discussed. And the book also contains an appendix with engaging biographical sketches of some of the leading minds behind the development of statistical distributions theory. A Primer on Statistical Distributions is not only ideal for students and professionals in statistics, it can also benefit individuals in applied areas such as psychology, geography, economics, and engineering, and even professionals in need of a logically organized, comprehensive reference to statistical distributions. It all adds up to a text that no one utilizing statistical distributions should be without.
A Primer of Analytic Number Theory

A Primer of Analytic Number Theory

Jeffrey Stopple

Cambridge University Press
2003
pokkari
This 2003 undergraduate introduction to analytic number theory develops analytic skills in the course of studying ancient questions on polygonal numbers, perfect numbers and amicable pairs. The question of how the primes are distributed amongst all the integers is central in analytic number theory. This distribution is determined by the Riemann zeta function, and Riemann's work shows how it is connected to the zeroes of his function, and the significance of the Riemann Hypothesis. Starting from a traditional calculus course and assuming no complex analysis, the author develops the basic ideas of elementary number theory. The text is supplemented by series of exercises to further develop the concepts, and includes brief sketches of more advanced ideas, to present contemporary research problems at a level suitable for undergraduates. In addition to proofs, both rigorous and heuristic, the book includes extensive graphics and tables to make analytic concepts as concrete as possible.
A Primer of Nonlinear Analysis

A Primer of Nonlinear Analysis

Antonio Ambrosetti; Giovanni Prodi

Cambridge University Press
1995
pokkari
This is an introduction to nonlinear functional analysis, in particular to those methods based on differential calculus in Banach spaces. It is in two parts; the first deals with the geometry of Banach spaces and includes a discussion of local and global inversion theorems for differentiable mappings. In the second part, the authors are more concerned with bifurcation theory, including the Hopf bifurcation. They include plenty of motivational and illustrative applications, which indeed provide much of the justification of nonlinear analysis. In particular, they discuss bifurcation problems arising from such areas as mechanics and fluid dynamics. The book is intended to accompany upper division courses for students of pure and applied mathematics and physics; exercises are consequently included.
