Dignity at Work

Dignity at Work

Randy Hodson

Cambridge University Press
2001

Human dignity, the ability to establish a sense of self-worth and self-respect and to enjoy the respect of others, is necessary for a fully realized life. Working with dignity is a fundamental part of achieving a life well-lived, yet the workplace often poses challenging obstacles because of mismanagement or managerial abuse. Defending dignity and realizing self-respect through work are key to workers' well-being; insuring the dignity of employees is equally important for organizations as they attempt to make effective use of their human capital. In this book Randy Hodson, a sociologist of work and organizational behavior, applies ethnographic and statistical approaches to this topic, offering both a richly detailed, inside look at real examples of dignity in action, and a broader analysis of the pivotal role of dignity at work.

The Regulation of Expression of Terminal Deoxynucleotidyl Transferase in an Inducible Murine Pre-B Cell Line
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to understand the control of synthesis of Tdt at a molecular level, using a murine pre B-cell line inducible for the enzyme. FLEl-4, an Abelson virus transformed fetal liver cell line, when treated with dibutyryl cAMP and caffeine (or other phosphodiesterase inhibitors), shows a three- to tenfold induction of Tdt, as measured by immunoprecipitation of pulse labelled enzyme, activity assays, and steady-state northern blot. The study also revealed Tdt expression (mRNA induction) by a group of agents which inhibit DNA synthesis by various mechanisms. This finding implies that Tdt expression is unlinked to clonal proliferation of pre-B cells, and suggests a multistage model for B-cell differentiation and the generation of immunoglobulin somatic variation. At a molecular level, the agents that induce Tdt were also shown to increase intracellular cAMP levels shortly before Tdt transcription. Finally, an analysis of histone phosphorylation patterns in induced cells reveal a marked enhancement of histone HI phosphorylation, a finding which may be related to the induction event. Team for America: The Army-Navy Game That Rallied a Nation at War
"A rousing celebration of a moment in history when college football was more than metaphor and entertainment, it was a gritty sidebar to real war." -- Robert Lipsyte, author of An Accidental SportswriterEach year the Army and Navy football teams meet for one epic game. Across the nation, fans tune in to see who will emerge victorious. But no game will ever match the one that was played on December 2, 1944. America was in the midst of World War II: soldiers and sailors were dying around the globe, and the home front suffered through shortages. But for one day, all that was forgotten. Navy's team was ranked number two, Army's number one and on the verge of becoming national champions. Everywhere, the war stopped as soldiers listened to the broadcast. Randy Roberts has interviewed the surviving players and coaches, bringing their stories to life. For three years, military upperclassmen graduated and joined the fight. For three hours, their alma mater gave them back one unforgettable performance. "The story of Army's celebrated 1944 national championship team is a fascinating one, and its victory over Navy that year is remembered as one of college football's greatest games. But Randy Roberts's A Team for America tells an even greater story. It is a story of our country. Of a time when college football -- and this remarkable Army team -- helped rekindle hope and confidence throughout the land." -- Brigadier General Peter M. Dawkins, U.S. Army (Ret.), 1958 Heisman Trophy winner, West Point "Roberts brings a historian's thoroughness to the subject . . . A fascinating time in American collegiate sports history." -- Kirkus Reviews
