This is the second part of a trilogy published in the Springer Briefs on Pioneers in Science and Practice on the occasion of the 80th birthday of Rodolfo Stavenhagen, a distinguished Mexican sociologist and professor emeritus of El Colegio de Mexico. Rodolfo Stavenhagen wrote this collection of six essays on The Emergence of Indigenous Peoples between 1965 and 2009. These widely discussed classic texts address: Classes, Colonialism and Acculturation (1965); Indigenous Peoples: An Introduction (2009); The Return of the Native: The Indigenous Challenge in Latin America (2002); Indigenous Peoples in Comparative Perspective (2004); Mexico’s Unfinished Symphony: The Zapatista Movement (2000); and Struggle and Resistance: Mexico’s Indians in Transition (2006). This volume discusses the emergence of indigenous peoples as new social and political actors at the national and international level. These texts deal with human rights, especially during the years he the author served as United Nations special rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples.

On the occasion of the 80th birthday of Rodolfo Stavenhagen, a distinguished Mexican sociologist and professor emeritus of El Colegio de Mexico, Úrsula Oswald Spring (UNAM/CRIM, Mexico) introduces him as a Pioneer on Indigenous Rights due to his research on human rights issues, especially when he served as United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples. This book introduces a trilogy of Briefs on Rodolfo Stavenhagen published in the same series Pioneers in Science and Practice.

In the original formulation of quantum mechanics the existence of a precise border between a microscopic world, governed by quantum mechanics, and a macroscopic world, described by classical mechanics was assumed. Modern theoretical and experimental physics has moved that border several times, carefully investigating its definition and making available to observation larger and larger quantum systems. The present book examines a paradigmatic case of the transition from quantum to classical behavior: A quantum particle is revealed in a tracking chamber as a trajectory obeying the laws of classical mechanics. The authors provide here a purely quantum-mechanical description of this behavior, thus helping to illuminate the nature of the border between the quantum and the classical.

Unsere Kenntnisse uber das Skelet als Organ und seine Veranderungen unter physio- logischen und pathologischen Bedingungen sind noch luckenhaft. N euere Forschungen haben sich intensiver mit morphologischen, chemischen und biologischen Vorgangen be- schaftigt, deren Kenntnis zum Verstandnis des Knochens als Stutzorgan sowie als Speicherorgan fUr Mineralien, aber auch zum Verstandnis der Bruchheilung, Pseud- arthrosenentstehung und der Knochentransplantationsfolgen unerlaBlich ist. Dem Radiologen fallt bei der Beurteilung nicht nur die Feststellung eines gerade eben vorhandenen Zustandes als Aufgabe zu, sondern auch die Einordnung dieses Zustandes in einen biologischen Geschehensablauf. Hierzu werden neb en Verlaufsbeobachtungen in zunehmendem MaBe auch zusatzliche Untersuchungsverfahren herangezogen werden mussen, wie die radiologische Bestimmung des Mineralgehaltes, die Klarung der Durch- blutungsverhaltnisse oder Studien mit Isotopen. Aus diesen Grunden erschien es notwendig, in einem allgemeinen Teil diese Grund- lagen zusammenzufassen und dem speziellen Teil, den Skeleterkrankungen und den speziellen Skeletbanden uber Wirbelsaule und Schadel, vorausgehen zu lassen. Hier ist noch vieles im FluB - eine Zusammenfassung des derzeitigen Wissens-Standes, aber auch der offenen Probleme kann daher nur Anregungen zu weiterer Forschung geben.
