Cornelius Ryan: The Longest Day (D-Day June 6, 1944), a Bridge Too Far (Loa #318)
For the 75th anniversary of D-Day, a deluxe collector's edition gathering two gripping masterpieces of military history. Library of America presents two of the best books ever written about World War II in a deluxe collector's edition featuring 88 pages of photographs, full-color endpaper maps, rare archival material revealing how the books were written, and a new introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and historian Rick Atkinson (The Liberation Trilogy). The Longest Day tells the story of the Allies' greatest success, the Normandy invasions of June 6, 1944, Operation Overlord; A Bridge Too Far recounts perhaps their greatest failure, the catastrophic airborne invasion of Holland in September 1944, known as Operation Market Garden. Together, they reveal not only the twisting fortunes of war and the grand sweep and scale of the largest amphibious and airborne invasions ever mounted, but also the very real human experience of combat, the small but momentous individual acts that can change the course of history. No one has told these stories more powerfully than Cornelius Ryan. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation's literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America's best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Until recently School children in the South learned Fr. Ryan's "Conquered Banner", and other of Father Ryan's poems by heart as part of their school work. From Denver to Spokane, from El Paso to Fort Benton, men talk of Casey Ryan and smile when they speak his name. Old men with the flat tone of coming senility in their voices will suck at their pipes and cackle reminiscently while they tell you of Casey's tumultuous youth-when he drove the six fastest horses in Colorado on the stage out from Cripple Creek, and whooped past would-be holdups with a grin of derision on his face and bullets whining after him and passengers praying disjointed prayers and clinging white-knuckled to the seats. They say that once a flat, lanky man climbed bareheaded out at the stage station below the mountain and met Casey coming springily off the box with whip and six reins in his hand. The lanky man was still pale from his ride, and he spluttered when he spoke: "Sa-ay N-next time you're held up and I'm r-ridin' with yuh, b-by gosh, you s-stop. I-I'd ruther be shot t-than p-pitched off into a c-canyon, s-somewhere a-and busted up "

He was everything I ever wanted, everything I've dreamed of, so why did wanting him hurt so much? Bianca I've spent my life always known as Reyes little sister. I wanted more than that, I wanted Ryan, the second in command the Vice President of The Grimm Brothers MC. I sent him coveted glances, placed myself in his lap, and begged for his attention. Where he was concerned, I threw pride out the window with a smile on my face. I thought time would get me what I wanted, I thought space would get his attention, I thought life, and fate would have him falling into my lap. The more I chased him, the faster he ran. Forcing myself to face the truth, he would never want me the way I wanted him. Moving on was painful in more ways than one. My new life brought about dark shadows. RyanShe was my best friend's little sister, the forbidden fruit, and ultimately my demise if given a chance. Running wasn't something I normally would do, I've faced death and didn't walk away. But Bianca had me running as fast and as far as I could. When someone was needed to talk peace with another motorcycle club, I was the first to volunteer. Who better for the job than the second in command? When I came home, it was to face Bianca and her new boyfriend. He did something to take the light from her eyes, and I was going to kill him for it. Although, I was the real person to blame. If I didn't run she would be safe, she would be happy, but most of all she would be mine. Will she finally get what she wants? Will Ryan learn the truth? How dark are the shadows haunting her?

One of the most famous revolutionaries in Irish history, Frank Ryan fought in the War of Independence and Irish Civil War, before becoming a leader of the inter-war Irish Republican Army. Embracing socialist republicanism in the 1930s, Ryan became a founding member of the short-lived but influential Republican Congress, and led the Irish contingent within the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. Following his capture by Franco's forces, his release was secured by the efforts of German military intelligence which sought to use him to further its wartime alliance with the IRA. He spent the final years of his life as an advisor to the Nazi regime. This study provides a concise reinterpretation of Ryan's controversial life and legacy based on primary sources, including much previously unpublished material. Setting Ryan's career within the wider context of the violent politics of inter-war Europe, it examines his remarkable ideological journey from socialist republicanism to Nazi collaboration. It concludes by examining why - despite his lack of political success - Ryan became such a widely admired figure in modern Irish politics.

John Ryan's model railway at Over Peover, Cheshire is a story on continual development. He first became interested in model railways at the age of five when his father took him to see A4s, A2s and A1s hurtling through Doncaster railway station on the East Coast Main Line. At Christmas 1955, he acquired his first train set a Hornby-Dublo three-rail `Duchess of Montrose'. Other train sets were acquired and layouts constructed - all OO gauge - until the fascination for O gauge took control. This was in the early 1980s and when, a little later, success and finances became available all his OO gauge locomotives and rolling stock were sold or swapped for O gauge models and he began constructing one of the largest layouts of its type in the country. The switch to O gauge coincided with his teaming up with Norman Solomon, an expert track-builder, who has been involved in the various stages of John's present enormous layout. Other people have supplied stations, goods sheds, coal hoppers, viaducts etc. John runs models of the locomotives he saw whilst a youngster in Doncaster during the 1950s and many are illustrated here. He also has a keen interest in the LNER locomotives built at Doncaster so that the layout can be operated in two periods - 1930s and 1950s. Carriages and wagons also fall into these two periods. Some of John's most impressive carriages include the `Silver Jubilee', `Coronation' and Pullman sets. Text within the book follows the development of model railways in Britain, Doncaster Plant Works' association with locomotive, carriage and wagon building, John's various railway layouts as well as touching upon his business interests. Photographs in the book show in fine detail and from different angles all aspects of the layout to such an extent that the viewer almost believes they are part of a real railway.

Kathleen Ryan: Bad Fruit
Relics of the everyday as tongue-in-cheek allegories for sexuality and decadence New York–based sculptor Kathleen Ryan (born 1984) recasts found and handmade objects as spectacular, larger-than-life hieroglyphs of Americana. This book gathers her titular series of bejeweled, oversized moldy fruit sculptures.
Kathleen Ryan: Daisy Chain
With painstaking technique, painterly sensitivity to color and a biting sense of humor, Ryan’s sculpture suggests art’s capacity to both evoke and arrest the passage of time Taking the form of vintage decorative crafts that have been blown up to an imposing scale, New York–based artist Kathleen Ryan’s (born 1984) Bad Fruit series employs material irony and art historical tropes to play with expectation and desire. Ryan fashions decaying fruit from glittering beads, gemstones and found items, illustrating her fascination with “how objects bring meaning and carry a history.” Subverting expectations of value, synthetic acrylic and glass beads simulate glistening flesh, while clusters of semiprecious stones play the role of pathogens such as penicillium digitatum. The selection of work in this volume presents Ryan’s fruits alongside other large-scale models of evanescent vegetation, and ignites a sense of disorientation and mythic wonder through its materiality, scale and evocative power. This fully illustrated catalog features essays by Bob Nickas, Shannon Mattern and Heather Davis.
