America's Favorite Poem

America's Favorite Poem

Jason Koo

Brooklyn Arts Press LLC

"If Frank O'Hara, Shakespeare and Andr Breton were alive today in Brooklyn, they might be Jason Koo. Jason Koo is alive today and he writes and I listen. I listen because he tells me something very important about what it means to be an American poet. Jason Koo is a live wire and the poems in America's Favorite Poem are shoots of ocean-colored electricity from the center of a country that listens to itself. These poems bluster and ask us, "What's the point of being ridiculous?" and then give us the answer just as quickly, because "Over and over and over again you dream." This is an American poetry that isn't afraid to dream again. So dream alongside of it and your new favorite poem just may be you again." -Dorothea Lasky

Challenge your perception, change your results. Moments are what we aim for-being crowned champion, accepting the diploma, watching your child take his or her first steps. Indelible time stamps in our minds, and fleeting just the same. The moment there's a slight shift in perspective or a nudge in a particular direction is all it takes to experience exponential gains down the road. Being a winner in life extends beyond the scoreboard, the track, and the field. Gem-encrusted championship rings are sold on eBay by ring holders who found themselves either broke, in legal trouble, or just plain desperate. If only they applied the same mindset to their off-the-field life as they did to their game. If only they embraced the same belief system (hereafter referred to as "B.S.") they held when they were on the field of play. If only they recognized the game was not confined to the minutes on the shot clock or the seconds between the start and finish line. It's time we expand our understanding of winning the game from four quarters or two halves to a period that spans a lifetime. Make no mistake, we're all playing the long game whether we like it or not, whether we know it or not, whether we want to or not. In the game of life, anybody can win, but not everyone is a winner or believes they are

Life Lessons From the Legendary Creatures in Griffin's First Day of SchoolGriffin's First Day of School is about a young griffin who is learning how to be a creature of legend. The story centers around Griffin as he attends a school where myth and magical creatures are part of daily life. Mythology from different countries, cultures, and religions intersects in the world within Griffin's First Day of School. Colorful illustrations and an interesting story were thoughtfully designed to appeal to young readers, and this book should interest most parents as well. Some of the creatures in this book are depicted as they were traditionally shown throughout history. Meanwhile, the artist took a fun creative approach for some of the other mythological creatures. These characters are so unique that a person can only find them in this story. Even though the world of this story is filled with legend and lore, the main character faces some very relatable events. Some of the events that Griffin faces are simple, like sitting through a boring class. But the story builds into lessons that are rather complex: learning from your mistakes, getting over the humiliation of being laughed at by your peers, conquering your fears, and sticking up for someone who was mean to you. This story is unique because it has lessons to be learned, lesson which every parent should go over with their children. Additionally, Griffin's First Day of School has a bestiary in the back of the book. This section is an alphabetical listing of mythological creatures, including an illustration of each creature. Each entry mentions the culture(s) and/or religion(s) that are connected to them. Readers (and listeners) can learn about each and every creature that is depicted in the book.

Luther's Epistle of Straw

Luther's Epistle of Straw

Jason D. Lane

This work challenges the common consensus that Luther, with his commitment to St. Paul's articulation of justification by faith, leaves no room for the Letter of St. James. Against this one-sided reading of Luther, focused only his criticism of the letter, this book argues that Luther had fruitful interpretations of the epistle that shaped the subsequent exegetical tradition. Scholarship's singular concentration on Luther's criticism of James as "an epistle of straw" has caused many to overlook Luther's sermons on James, the many places where James comes to full expression in Luther's writings, and the influence that Luther's biblical interpretation had on later interpretations of James. Based primarily on neglected Lutheran sermons in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, this work examines the pastoral hermeneutic of Luther and his theological heirs as they heard the voice of James and communicated that voice to and for the sake of the church. Scholars, pastors, and educated laity alike are invited to discover how Luther's theology was shaped by the Epistle of James and how Luther's students and theological heirs aimed to preach this disputed letter fruitfully to their hearers.
