When Rab was a baby, his mother made a decision which would change his life. She feared he would be sent to work in the hellish mines of Mercury, to eke out his life until he was worn out, all in the name of maintaning the defense of the Solar Sytem. But when her desperate attempt to flee with her 2 year old failed, she took a desperate step to save him. She cut off his hand.Decades later, Rab has been spared the physical hardships he can no longer endure, and is now based on the Mask, the all-encompassing structure which hides the Solar Sytem from alien eyes. And it is during his watch that a spaceship arrives, one which has travelled for a hundred years from a long-forgotten colony planet. If they pierce the Mask, everything humanity has created will be left open to the alien threat. But this strange ship, bearing an offshoot of the species, may bring something else with them. Hope.

Poetry lovers – those who enjoy reading it and those who are compelled to write it – will find in this collection a truly splendid experience of the country's soul. So much of the ineffable human spirit and experience that usually remains untold is gently lifted above the survace with care, attention and honesty. This is the fifth annual Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Anthology, and is a compendium of the poems long-listed for the 2015 Sol Plaatje EU Poetry Award. Every year South African poets, young and old, debut or previously published, are invited to submit up to three of their poetic efforts to the award, in any of the country's 11 official languages. The anthology seeks to publish voices in as many difference languages as possible, and be one of the spaces in which these tongues are given equal space and respect. The anthology is a truly democratic as well as creative effort, in keeping with the spirit of the legendary intellectual giant, Sol Plaatje, the activist, linguist, translator, novelist, journalist and leader.
The Sol Plaatje European Union poetry anthology
The seventh volume in this series anthologises the best entries for the 2017 Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Award. The anthology is a truly democratic as well as creative effort, in keeping with the spirit of the legendary intellectual giant, Sol Plaatje; activist, linguist, translator, novelist, journalist and leader. The poems offer readers sensibilities, observations and responses to the complex, nuanced and uncomfortable realities of life in our country – past, present and future. Written in Afrikaans, English, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, isiXhosa and isiZulu and accompanied by English translations where relevant, they reflect the diversity of our nation. The poems are important. Chair of the judging panel, Professor Mongane Wally Serote, says: “These South African poets have understood something. They hold the present by the scruff and threaten it. If this nation has not revolted, it is evolving to revolt, the poets say. The present cannot hold, the poets keep saying. Like healers, they sing, beat the drums and dance to the rhythm of their tongues.” Each year the Jacana Literary Foundation (JLF) invites South African poets, young and old, debut or previously published, to submit for consideration up to three works in any of the official languages of South Africa. Athol Williams, Goodenough Mashigo, Wally Serote, Pieter Odendaal and Kholeka Putuma are on this year’s judging panel. Judging blind, they select a long-list of poems for publication in the anthology. The project is funded by the European Union.

Revisiting Sol Plaatje’s Mafeking Diary
Sol Plaatje’s Mafeking Diary, written (in English) during the famous siege of 1899–1900, is one of South Africa’s finest pieces of writing, inspired by the events he witnessed and his own part in the siege. Perceptive, beautifully written, often very funny, it is one of the best of the many diaries written during the South African War, and it is the only one by a black South African. Its author, Sol Plaatje, would later achieve fame as a journalist, writer and political leader, but in October 1899, when he began his diary, he was just 23 years old and worked as an interpreter in the local magistrate’s office. Yet, despite being well known to literary scholars and historians, Plaatje’s diary has never had the attention it deserves, and Plaatje’s other writings – his novel Mhudi and his political book, Native Life in South Africa – are far better known and more widely read. Plaatje’s Diary was only published for the first time in 1973. Fifty years on we both celebrate and take stock. We have brought together a distinguished cast of writers, drawn from several different disciplines, to engage creatively with the diary. This book includes short stories inspired by Plaatje and his diary; an exploration of Plaatje’s use of language; accounts of the historical and literary contexts that shaped the diary and the impact it had; the connections between Plaatje’s experiences during the siege and his later career as a journalist; and an illuminating comparison between Plaatje’s Diary and that of another famous black South African, Tiyo Soga. This book will be essential reading for anybody seeking a better knowledge and understanding of one of South Africa’s most remarkable pieces of writing.

NOVA SOL, book one of the Brief History of Humankind Trilogy Twenty years after the Planetary Rebellion, the Nova Sol colonists are still stranded hundreds of light years from Earth. The mysterious teleportation mechanism that allowed humans to settle the new solar system was eradicated in the natural disasters caused by the rebellion. The invention of a faster than light technology offers the 5 million colonists new hope for returning to their home planet. But difficulties arise while implementing the new stardrive. These difficulties will force President Benefacio to risk others' lives in order to get back to Earth. Lurking in the background, the Bions - bio-nanites that were "awakened" during the Planetary Rebellion - are following their own agenda, which will put them at odds with the humans. Several humans - including President Benefacio's father - have spontaneously developed anti-aging abilities. Is this a freak occurrence or is there some greater force at work? Meanwhile, on Bastin, the desert planet, one of the original human colonists keeps a secret that will change the course of human history.
